A very horrorshow string of slovos o my brothers and sisters. I liked it more than a malenky lomtick, I did.

Soubhiville This book is a wild ride. I kind of think it‘s genius. 4mo

Ended up liking this book by the end, I feel there was a good lesson to be learned and an interesting plot line. I know the defining feature of the book is the nadsat language but I think that's why I found it so hard to get into. The big reason I give it a so so is because it took me SO long to read and that rarely happens to me because I was so bored in the middle. Still, glad I finished 😬

Been on hiatus a while because it is taking me FOREVER to finish this book. I cannot for the life of me get into it. I figured out the nadsat language pretty quick but I just don't care about the characters or storyline so idk if I'll enjoy it much. A few good quotes are sticking with me though. Fingers crossed I finish soon 🤞

rretzler The first time I started it, I also couldn‘t get into it. I waited 15 years or so, and when I tried again, found that I really enjoyed it. It‘s not for everyone granted. 5mo
paramegan @rretzler I'm gonna make myself finish it just to be sure lol and probably watch the movie just so I know what all the hype is about 5mo

I‘m sure this has been posted already but,

I could not get into this book; even with a dictionary of translations on the side. Is it weird that I still want this sequel in my library just for show?! 😂

Eek! 😱
What say you? Can a movie be as good as the book even if it doesn't resemble it or is just loosely based on the original book? I have to say of the only two books/series I've actually read, Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice, I loved both book and movie(s).

Stephuhhnieee @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego It really is! And I have this irrational fear that I‘ll get too into it and start using the slang irl 😂😂🤦🏼‍♀️ 13mo

My droogs who have read this horrorshow classic and/or have viddy the movie, will agree that Alex is definitely a #villain!

There are two versions of the novel: early American editions (left) had the last chapter removed (which the Kubrick movie reflects), and versions (right) that have all chapters (or “restored”), as originally published in Britain. Being the book nerd I am, I have both 🤓!

As a teenager I read this countless times. I also watched the Kubrick film a lot. Then I stopped. It‘s probably been 15-20 years since the last time I read my battered and broken copy. So now I‘ve bought a new copy with the restored text and look forward to reading the book again.

Uhhh ... fantastically written book about like and all that cal. There were some really difficult parts to get through, graphic and violent depictions. Burgess‘s created language takes a couple chapters to get used to and start to really understand. Worth reading. Now to watch the movie which I‘ve never seen.

2BR02B The movie omits the last chapter of the book, so it ends on a much darker note. 2y
OrangeMooseReads @2BR02B I‘ve read that. 2y

kelseynicburke @andrew61 the author created his own slang which is very interesting but it meant I had no idea what anyone was talking about 😐 2y
WarpedSweetness I have a like/hate relationship with this book. I found it interesting, but I also has the same problem as @kelseynicburke did with the slang; plus some other things. It took me three or four times to read this. Did you see the movie? 2y

This book fall into the same category as Brave New World or other legendary dystopias for me - probably won't surprise anyone if I say so.

Yikes!! This book 😲 first I didn't realize you needed a dictionary to translate the Nadsat words, which I found online. Second I had NO idea how violent this was!! And I am only on chapter 4. I do not like Alex and his droogs!

Laura317 I remember seeing part of the movie. I was horrified! It was extremely violent. 3y
tjwill This has been on my TBR for years! 3y
AshleyHoss820 Keep going! It's a tough read but the overall message is thought-provoking. It's good you don't like Alex and his droogs! I don't think you're meant to. And the movie excludes the final chapter, which really angered the author. 😊 3y

ReadingEnvy I once had a dream where this book became a musical. 3y
Tnovo @Laura317 I would imagine it's very violent, haven't decided yet if I want to see it. Let's see how it ends 🤔 3y
Tnovo @AshleyHoss820 I am 2/3 of the way through and now I have to see if "treatment" works. Glad I got the version with all 21 chapters the way he intended it. 3y
Tnovo @ReadingEnvy a musical version would have to star Johnny Depp as Alex, lol and it would still be creepy. Like Sweeny Todd! 3y

I picked this up this weekend planning to read it but put it down for another day. Maybe this weekend.
It's a long time since I left the Manchester sixth form college where Burgess had gone to the Catholic brothers grammar school years before and he vividly described it in his autobiography. My older daughters have since studied there and it has changed a lot. There's also an art centre in mcr named after him.

Took longer to read than I'd expected due to the heavy use of the Nadsat language. Focus on the importance of choice. Without it, are we any more than automatons? Highly recommended.
