5 ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
I have loved this book since the first time I read it. I reread it every few years for the happy feeling it leaves in the pit of my stomach. This year, we listened to it on audiobook in the car on the way to christmas dinner. Josh joined me for the listen, and for him it was the first time, and he was enthralled. He was grumpy about it, but he stayed awake for the entire thing and commented on who various characters remind him of. ⬇

LibrarianRyan It‘s his curmudgeonly way of saying he loved it. There is just something about the “worst” family in the community, deciding to upset the status quo to remind everyone that there is good in everyone, and that magic can come from children and adults alike. On a side note, the narrator for this audiobook was wonderful. I perfectly pictured a little old lady like my grandmother recounting this story as I listened. It was perfect.

Started the annual read-aloud with the kiddo today. Hubby was laughing at some of the funny bits, and I realized he‘s never listened in before. Then he said kiddo doesn‘t seem too interested in it (untrue, by the way, but it was snack and bedtime) - to which I say who cares? I read it for me, because it‘s my family tradition, and it‘s important to me whether anyone else follows along or not.

I thought this would be a good family audio during our road trip to a family party today.... but could not go past 20 minutes. I tried, I did, but I couldn‘t. It felt backward and I hope it turns around at the end... but I didn‘t want to go through it. #holidayread #wintergames #teamnutcracker

This has a soft spot in my heart because I played Imogene Herdman in the play. Even though it's targeted at children, there are so many poignant and nuanced moments. It's a progressive book for being published in 1972; so many of the lessons and critiques hold up in today's society. https://onthebl.org/2019/12/15/the-best-christmas-pageant-ever-by-barbara-robins... or through the link in my bio!!!

Just re-read (for the 30th time) this sweet, feel good Christmas tale. It‘s a simple story that carries with it a message of hope, joy, and love that seems to stand the test of time. It doesn‘t offer deep social commentary but it gives you a moment of pure peace and joy fitting for this season. #wintergames. #thefilthyanimals

Come-read-with-me @4thhouseontheleft It‘s really old - I think it was originally published in the 1970‘s. There are newer versions but they don‘t have the full story. I was lucky to find this one in a very dusty corner of a used bookstore. If you can find it I think you‘d like it! 🙂 2mo

A Christmas favorite- both the movie with Loretta Switt and the audiobook with Elaine Stritch are classics not to be missed! The Herdmans are the worst kids in school- messy, mean, troublemakers. When they find out that there is dessert served in Sunday School they are off to that church- just in time for the Christmas Pagaent. A heart felt and heart warming Christmas story🐑🐫😘

Yes, I realize that it‘s New Year‘s Eve and I‘m getting sentimental about a hilarious children‘s Christmas story, but I had forgotten about this gem until my mom visited at Christmas and was laughing at the memory of it. I had to wait till now until the ebook became available from my library to borrow. I‘d forgotten how much I love this story. Memo to self: read every year at Christmas.
