This memoir manages to feel both personal & somehow oddly emotionally detached at the same time, as the author shares her life story, focusing mainly on the relationship with her first husband, Gil. Significantly older, & too young to recognize warning signs, she marries him quite young after meeting him after fresh trauma of her own. Over decades, he only adds to that from a variety of abuses, alcoholism & drug use. Heartbreaking but fast paced.

This slasher story set in the titular retirement home moves quickly with a high body count! Rose is among the first of the residents to be suspicious of the accidents & rising death toll. She & her friends set about their own investigation. With a sizable cast & a great performance, this fast-paced & bloody thriller has a certain cinematic quality to it, that dare I say makes this a fun #SpookySeasonRead! A little predictable but a lot of fun!

It‘s the first #SVHCorpse! Tragic Tricia Martin succumbs to leukemia, surrounded by not her own family, but the Wakefields. Her older sister Betsy arrives to the hospital too late to say goodbye & causes quite a scene. Tricia made Steven promise to look after Betsy & she winds up moving into their den, determined to give up her drinking & drugging (& men). Jessica wants her gone & worries that Betsy is falling for Steven. Her scheme almost works!

JenlovesJT47 😅 are you keeping track of how many corpses there are? The list is long and distinguished! 😂 4d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I am!! 🤣 I figured a body count would be fun— though, naturally, I will continue to figure out the holiday count too! Technically, this is a two-corpse book since Roger Barrett‘s mom dies at the end, too! 3d
JenlovesJT47 Jess has at least 3 boyfriends die in SVH. No wonder she‘s got issues 😅 3d
See All 14 Comments
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Also, they don‘t specify, but I think the Wakefields paid for Tricia‘s funeral since her own dad doesn‘t even go to it… something I don‘t think I would have even noticed reading it the first time around as a kid! 3d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I will have to keep a separate count for dead boyfriends! 🤣 3d
JenlovesJT47 How funny, I never thought about that but you‘re probably right! Poor Tricia. I‘ve been doing a mini SV marathon this week and read a bunch of the SVK books yesterday. I‘m surprised how much I enjoy them. The one I read yesterday told what time they were born (Liz at 1:15 and Jess at 1:19 p.m.). Whoever did the kids books paid more attention to details than some of the others. 3d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I know what you mean about inconsistencies… Roger‘s father was mentioned earlier as a drunk, but apparently he left sometime between Roger winning the scholarship race and this book… The SVK books are fun though! I am really enjoying these SVH books though! I am trying to go with publication order, so I think the super editions start soon which I always loved! 3d
JenlovesJT47 The super editions are so fun! My favorite one that I had never read when it came out is Falling For Lucas. It is absolutely hysterical 🤣. And yeah, all the inconsistencies, like Lila being a klepto for 2 seconds then it never being mentioned again. And some weird stuff with her dad. I would LOVE to see the so-called Sweet Valley Bible that the ghostwriters used. I think continuity was a bit better in the books that came out in the 90s. 3d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Is that the one in NYC? Plus there‘s some weird siblings that are mentioned and then not at all— like Todd having a brother?? So strange! But, spotting these little errors makes the re-reading all the more fun because as a kid, I sure didn‘t notice (well except for when dead people show up again alive in SVU!). And yes! I can‘t believe they have kept that referenced Bible a secret still! 3d
JenlovesJT47 Jessica Takes Manhattan is the one in NYC, Falling For Lucas is at a ski cabin in Colorado. I‘ll have to find my review and tag you. Speaking of extra siblings, I read the SVK book yesterday Ellen Is Home Alone. And she has an older sister named Debbie who I have zero recollection of in the middle school books. They mention her little brother Mark, who I know is in SVT. Maybe I‘m just forgetting! 👵🏻 As a side note, airheaded Ellen is ⬇️ 3d
JenlovesJT47 Absolutely hysterical and I really wish she were in SVH. I just read The Unicorns Go Hawaiian last week (for the first time in 20 years!) and omg, Ellen cracks me up. Has the same ditzy personality in the kids books. 😆 3d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Yes!! Ellen‘s sister definitely doesn‘t make it to the SVT series! Though at least her little brother survives! I was sad that Ellen disappeared too— I really grew to like her— she‘s really funny in the Unicorn Club books, too! 3d
JenlovesJT47 Do they ever explain what happened to her? I assume she moved away or was killed by a rogue serial killer 😅 3d
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Maybe one of the seven Sweet Valley haunted houses swallowed her up?? Along with Todd‘s little brother! 3d

6 years earlier, Jen‘s forest ranger father disappeared into the woods. Jen held out hope that he was still alive, somehow, but a call summons her home to her emotionally distant mother & her father‘s remains. Determined to learn the truth, Jen convinces old—& new— friends to follow her father‘s footsteps. Never scary, there is a lot of violence & a predictable plot. The abrupt ending didn‘t feel like a satisfying conclusion. Unlikable characters!

I really enjoyed Gailey‘s JUST LIKE HOME, so I was excited to dive into this one on audio. It‘s a great performance but, unfortunately, this was just too sexually strange for me. Kinsey‘s unnatural fetish overwhelms the plot (which moves along quickly) & while sometimes body horror can be fun, this just isn‘t the fun or chilling listen that I wanted. I was curious to see how it would end, so I finished it but without the narrator, I wouldn‘t have!

I can‘t believe it‘s been 5 years since I read— & loved!— Harrison‘s debut novel! I absolutely couldn‘t put this latest one down! It‘s a story of sisters, family, grief, & a dash of love all around a haunted house & some genuinely spooky parts! Clio, the youngest of 3 sisters, undertakes renovating the house they blame for destroying their family—but with a book within a book, & her own memories, she starts to find the truth. Funny & chilling!

ShyBookOwl Can't wait! I love all her books (except So Thirsty, tbh 😕) 6d
TorieStorieS @ShyBookOwl I have collected in one format or another all of her middle books, but haven‘t actually read/listened to any but The Return so far! Clio got a little vapid & self-centered here but I appreciated her character growth & am excited to have more of Harrison‘s books handy! 6d

While this certainly captured my attention throughout (and knocked #OK off my #ReadTheUSChallenge), I had a hard time connecting with the main narrator, Steph. She has a hard time reconciling love with her own ambition to become the first Cherokee female astronaut. The book largely revolves around her relationships which ultimately disappointed me. Steph‘s selfish, reckless & careless behavior makes her more frustrating than fun to read about!

This is one of my favorites of the series! 25 year old hospital orderly, Carl, falls desperately in love with Elizabeth while she works as a candy striper because Liz, being her saintly self, smiles & is polite to him. He kidnaps her from the parking lot & takes her to his hovel. Jessica once again can‘t wait for her sister to start partying at the Morrows‘ welcome party. Todd sounds the alarm, Max Dellon‘s arrested & twin magic saves the day!

I can‘t believe how long this one has been sitting in my TBR! This father/son collaboration certainly feels smooth— though, other than the departure from a ME setting (we are in small town Appalachia instead)— I don‘t think this feels out of Stephen King‘s usual books. A sudden “Aurora event” sends women into strange cocoons upon falling asleep, sending the world into chaos. Focusing on a small town & women‘s prison, the battle for survival plays.

I really enjoyed McCoy‘s latest! Full of old Hollywood glamour & nostalgia, with a ‘90s interview frame, the titular Lori Lovely‘s career— her quick rise to stardom & her abrupt departure to join a nunnery— is all recounted here. While some parts may feel familiar & expected, I still couldn‘t tear myself away from this one! The dual perspectives work well, though I wanted Marie‘s POV too. Plus, it‘s nice to share a favorite Aunt Laurie!

This snappy debut moves quickly— spanning more years than I expected given its less than 300 page count. Percy meets Joey & Zoe (who like Bowie) in her sophomore year of college & her relationship with the couple—both together & apart forever changes her life. Plenty of will-they/won‘t-they tension, musical banter & strong nostalgia that got songs stuck in my head without more than a track title, this is fun, but a bit too brief! I wanted more!

The #SVH cheerleading squad has two openings & while Jessica‘s certain Cara Walker will get her spot back (she & Lila were kicked off by turning the sprinklers on the Palisades High cheerleaders), she‘s equally determined that “Easy” Annie Whitman will not make the cut— even if her tryouts are the best! Liz has been tutoring the sophomore who seems clueless to the chatter about her dating life (she innocently brags about two dates in one night!)⬇️

TorieStorieS Jessica threatens to quit if Annie makes the squad… but Annie is so heartbroken to not make it, that she purposely overdoses on pills. Team manager Ricky Capaldo‘s own crush on Annie leads him to save her life! Jessica, overcome with guilt, guarantees that Annie will be on the squad if she regains consciousness, which she does. Even Annie‘s model mother promises to pay more attention to her daughter. Liz is at her saintly best throughout. 3w

JenlovesJT47 Oh don‘t apologize! I just remember you mentioning her before (don‘t worry I do the same thing lol — can‘t remember who I told what to 😳) 1mo

Down Cemetery Road | Mick Herron

Mehso-so

Though well-performed, this audio re-release after twenty years & the new popularity of SLOW HORSES just wasn‘t for me. Sarah leaps to some wild conclusions after a home in her neighborhood blows up, leaving only a young girl as a survivor. Sarah blows up her own life in trying to find the girl. The abrupt transitions & cast size did make me wish that I physically read this instead though I doubt that would have helped me connect with Sarah.

kspenmoll Gorgeous cover though! 1mo
TorieStorieS @kspenmoll Thanks— that‘s actually not the cover but a picture that I colored! 😊 1mo

Jessica‘s long harbored a crush on wealthy & handsome Bruce Patman & she‘s more determined than ever to date him. He flirts with her at Secca Lake (even unties red bikini in front of everyone!), then make out in the bushes until Liz worriedly tracks them down. Jess loses herself with Bruce— from letting him beat her at tennis, changing her fashion sense & even skips cheerleading! When Liz schemes to reveal 1Bruce1 lied to her, Jess dumps him!

Soscha I still do want to go back & read these. I missed it the first time ‘round. 1mo
Ladygodiva7 I‘d love to read SVH all over again! 1mo
TorieStorieS @Soscha If you do, please tag me! I‘m having such fun re-reading them… but truly cannot imagine reading them with fresh eyes now as they are definitely a product of their era! 🤣 1mo

TorieStorieS @Ladygodiva7 I am having so much fun with this #SweetValleyReRead! I started this project last year with the Kids series and am only (finally!) to the high school ones! It‘s been such a joy though! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 I think I‘m going to have a mini marathon in the next week or two and see how fast I can get through the Kids and Twins series. I really can‘t wait to get to SVU and we should definitely buddy read when you get to that point. You‘re flying through! I read SVH slowly over 6-7 years. But I love these books. Been having such a hard time concentrating on reading lately and focusing on these for a bit might help. 1mo
JenlovesJT47 And! I unashamedly adore the character of Bruce Patman, warts and all. He‘s an asshole who‘s pretty consistently an asshole with flashes of humanity here and there. My favorite Bruce is in the Death Valley miniseries. I read those two books over and over again, loved the adventure/danger aspect even though it made zero sense to me why they didn‘t have an adult with them. I‘m imaging my 16-year-old nephew hiking alone in Death Valley. Not pretty! 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Well, nothing ends a reading slump like Sweet Valley! I don‘t feel like I‘m flying through since I‘ve been at this for 18 months! But I‘m really enjoying it! And definitely up for an SVU buddy read if you give me time to get through SVH! Oh and the senior year ones!! Most of those will be new to me! 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I am right with you on 1Bruce1 forever!! I love him… even though he‘s a real creeper in these early books! They soften him up and I always loved him in the secret diaries too!! Plus he‘s great in the SVU books, too! He gets to be poor!! 🤣 And definitely there‘s not much parenting or supervision in the series!! I don‘t want to think about any 16 year olds in any of these circumstances in real life!! 1mo

The 4th book in the #FrankieElkinSeries harkens back quite a bit to the first with a more urban backdrop— this time Tucson— and deeply invested in the Afghani refugee community there. A friend of a missing young mother contacts Frankie to find a woman who no one seems to be looking for— not even her husband. With new reptile roommates & a fresh cast to provide assistance, this moves quickly but with a lot of background into her target‘s story.

The 3rd in the #FrankieElkinSeries trades the wilds of WY for an even more remote Hawaiian atoll. A death row inmate convinces Frankie to rescue her much younger sister as the perfect undercover person to infiltrate the island. It‘s not long before Frankie finds herself in over her head with secrets, betrayals & much less cuddly animal roommates (a wolf spider & a crab!). Lots of action, twists though there are some thin spots to some of the plan.

One Step Too Far | Lisa Gardner

Wow—for as much as I didn‘t love the first book in the #FrankieElkinSeries, I sure did love this second one! Impulsively, nomadic citizen finder of missing persons, Frankie joins the search for Tim O‘Day who went into the WY Shoshone National Forest with his groomsmen for a bachelor party weekend & was the only one to not make it out, despite being the most experienced outdoorsman. 5 years later, they‘re hoping the SAR dog Daisy can bring closure.

Gardner‘s long been one of my favorite authors & now that she‘s 4 books deep into the #FrankieElkinSeries, I am excited to binge them! Unfortunately, this is probably my least favorite of her books… Frankie‘s a nomadic alcoholic who for 9 years has traded her addiction to booze for being a citizen detective finding missing persons— specializing in victims of color. Gardner addresses loosely the optics of a white savior complex, but not smoothly.

The Fall Dance is only 2 weeks away & Jessica‘s determined to win as Fall Queen, since it‘s a guarantee that Bruce Patman will be king. Enid‘s boyfriend, Ronnie Edwards, is on the dance committee so Jess can‘t help but share with him a letter she found in Liz‘s bedroom—from Enid‘s ex, George Warren! Enid‘s wild past (as a 13 year old?!) is revealed & Enid blames Liz for blabbing her secrets. For revenge, Liz gets Winston Egbert crowned king!

JenlovesJT47 Where did you find these shirts?! I have random stuff I‘ve collected. Jess and Liz dolls, a Sweet Life tote bag, a couple of different 250-piece puzzles. Haven‘t looked for anything in awhile. eBay is where I usually find stuff. 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 A tote bag?? I‘m super jealous!! This sweatshirt is from TeePublic— and I love it! I don‘t have any puzzles either! How fun! I do have the board game somewhere in the basement though! And I have the dolls but Jessica lost an arm to mice I think… she‘s been recently rescued from my dad‘s basement and now resides armless with her sister in a safer place in my basement! 🤣 1mo
JenlovesJT47 😅😅 well when my stuff was being held hostage I lost Liz the doll, who knows where she is. I can post a pic of my SV loot when I go home in a few days. I got the tote bag on eBay, it was some rare giveaway somewhere but I don‘t remember where 🤔. They have a lot of stuff on Etsy, too. Magnets and such. 🤓 And I definitely have the board game, my friend‘s grandma found it at a garage sale when we were in elementary school! 1mo

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I wish I could find the maps that came with the dolls! I was so sure that I had saved those! And definitely can‘t wait to see your Sweet Valley loot! I have had good luck on Etsy too— and I think I got my game at a used bookstore about 15 years ago! I made my husband and friend play it with me immediately but we haven‘t played since! 🤣 1mo
JenlovesJT47 My dolls haven‘t been opened I don‘t think, I can check the Jessica doll to see if the map is still in there. I do have a map of Sweet Valley that came in my fan club box if you want to see it. Actually I think I have a pic of it on my phone. And that‘s so funny! I haven‘t played the game since my bff and I played when we were kids. 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Actually, and forgive me if I‘ve shown you this before (I can‘t remember! 😳) but I sent pics of all my stuff to the snark valley blog owner years ago and she posted it, here‘s the link https://snarkvalley.wordpress.com/2017/11/30/sweet-valley-high-fan-club-the-orac... 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I definitely played with mine so the mice aren‘t totally to blame… though I didn‘t chew off that arm! 🤣 I would love to see even more pictures and I‘m checking the link out now!! 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 You had the stationery??? So cool!!! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 I also had a pencil but I dunno what happened to it ☹️ I used the stationery when I was a kid but I have 2 or 3 sheets left. I also have a puzzle from the cover of Dangerous Love but I got it after these pics were taken. If you read her blog she is hilarious! She made that corn dog recipe from the Oracle and I remember making it once when I was a kid. Didn‘t turn out like we hoped 😆 1mo
JenlovesJT47 2 pencils actually!! 😅🤓🤓🤓 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Oops I just looked at the post, couldn‘t remember which puzzle was posted but the other one I have is of Jessica and A.J. Morgan. 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 That recipe lost me at mustard water, hahaha, so I am just impressed you both actually tried it!! And AJ Morgan— I forgot about that redhead!! And pencils!! So cool!!! Now I have something to else to keep an eye out for on eBay! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 I think there are at least two other puzzles but I can‘t remember what they are. I even put the two that I have together a few years ago and surprisingly all the pieces were there. 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 I will have to look for them!! So fun!! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 I checked out TeePublic last night and couldn‘t resist ordering this https://www.teepublic.com/t-shirt/2840920-sweet-valley-high-school 1mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Oooo— it looks like they have more designs than the last time I looked! I may have to be your twin in fashion as well! 1mo
JenlovesJT47 I might me a dork but I can guarantee I‘ll wear it all the time! #twinning 🤓 1mo

The Sound of Whales | Kerr Thomson

This #YANovel is set on a Scottish “ghost island” (meaning it‘s not on original maps), & opens with Fraser, his mute brother & newcomer Hayley, being thrust together on a stormy night— that in the morning washes up a dead whale & then a dead body not long after! Though predictable, I enjoyed the magic of the whales enough to overcome some of the mixed messages & unrealistic dialogue & characters. Fun audio performance with a great accent!

Happy Publication Day! I really think Bishop‘s second novel is even better than her first! With multiple perspectives, timelines & a multimedia slant, this makes for a summer thriller that handles big issues, a murder & family drama— as well as the deeper bonds of friendship & family— making it impossible to put down! I loved it! The characters all come to life— as well as the beautiful Cote de Azur setting! A terrific summer read for sure!

My #SweetValleyReRead is getting to the books I‘m the most excited to revisit! My original copy of this book is actually a misprint so this is the first time that I‘ve read pages 90-123 (56-90 are included twice in mine!)! Grounded from driving, Jessica rebels & sneaks out on a date with dropout Rick Andover. She gets caught at the seedy roadhouse bar, Kelly‘s & doesn‘t correct the cop who thinks she‘s Liz! Liz suffers rumors & mopes about Todd.

TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 And so it begins!! 🥳 2mo

Chase‘s latest is another solidly entertaining dual timeline/dual perspective story. Siblings Maggie & Kit are especially close—though their small family certainly has more than its share of secrets. In 2019, a phone call from the past has put Maggie in a tailspin, leaving Paris to return to England. Kit, now in antiques, has also been searching through the past & his own fragmented memories of the time when their mother failed to come home.

Not Quite Dead Yet | Holly Jackson

Jackson‘s adult thriller debut is solidly entertaining with an engaging hook, a tight timeline & a unique angle. At 27, Jet isn‘t as far in life as she expected to be… living back at home with her parents with a catchphrase of doing everything “later”. This arrested development abruptly comes to a change on Halloween when she‘s attacked in their kitchen & given a week to live. So she sets out, with her childhood friend, to solver her own murder!
