"This smart and original mystery is a true page-turner... will baffle, surprise, and draw out suspicion until the final few pages. With each book, Higashino continues to elevate the modern mystery as an intense and inventive literary form." Library Journal (starred review) "Fiendishly clever... Higashino offers one twist after another... Readers will marvel at the artful way the plot builds to the solution." Publishers Weekly (starred review)***Acclaimed bestselling novelist Kunihiko Hidaka is found brutally murdered in his home on the night before he's planning to leave Japan and relocate to Vancouver. His body is found in his office, a locked room, within his locked house, by his wife and his best friend, both of whom have rock solid alibis. Or so it seems. At the crime scene, Police Detective Kyochiro Kaga recognizes Hidaka's best friend, Osamu Nonoguchi. Years ago when they were both teachers, they were colleagues at the same public school. Kaga went on to join the police force while Nonoguchi eventually left to become a full-time writer, though with not nearly the success of his friend Hidaka. As Kaga investigates, he eventually uncovers evidence that indicates that the two writers' relationship was very different that they claimed, that they were anything but best friends. But the question before Kaga isn't necessarily who, or how, but why. In a brilliantly realized tale of cat and mouse, the detective and the killer battle over the truth of the past and how events that led to the murder really unfolded. And if Kaga isn't able to uncover and prove why the murder was committed, then the truth may never come out. Malice is one of the bestsellingthe most acclaimednovel in Keigo Higashino's series featuring police detective Kyochiro Kaga, one of the most popular creations of the bestselling novelist in Asia.

Still good, but so far my least favorite of his works. I have 2 left to read: the latest translated one (Newcomer, which also features the same detective as the one in this book), and the big stand-alone novel, Journey under the Midnight Sun, which has been lauded by many. Been a while since I followed/tracked an author's works!

I'm reading another Higashino, completely caught up in it, and when I look up... 😂 When you realize they're big already... Constanze is not a baby anymore.

Higashino always takes me out of a reading slump but so far, despite this being a nice flow, it's my least favorite. But who knows, I'm just halfway through. 🤔

I received this book some time ago from @FantasyChick in a swap. I finally got around to reading it and glad I did. This is not your traditional mystery as it focuses more on motive versus finding the killer. #readmyowndamnbooks

I enjoyed this good detective story exploring the psychology of murder... a twisty story of ‘whydunnit‘. Clever plot and engaging narrative but I think he wrote other better ones than this. Still a ‘Pick‘ for its originality and being irresistibly compelling.

TheWordJar The Devotion of Suspect X is still my favorite. I just picked up Under the Midnight Sun and A Midsummer Equation from Book Outlet, and I‘m quite excited to read them! 11mo

Malice is an incredibly compelling mystery. Higashino‘s style is clear, sparse, and direct, but the substance of this novel is many layered. Malice is a true cat-and-mouse murder mystery. At every moment when you feel like you‘ve worked it out, Higashino takes you in a different direction. Immensely compelling, but easy to read. I look forward to reading more of Higashino‘s work.

Freespirit Sounds like one for the TBR pile😄 11mo

I really enjoyed this murder mystery. Seldom are they written with the plot being the thought process of the detective. As someone who likes puzzles and logic problems that appealed to me. I didn't expect the different style twist it had. I wish this author was easier to find. I'd read more. Read for #booked2018 #Japanesethriller Hope to finish one more before the year ends.

Read for #japanesethriller #booked2018. A famous author is murdered and a writer friend recounts the investigation but quickly becomes a part of it himself when detective kaga digs in. Told from the friend‘s writings and Kaga‘s it quickly drew me in. The murderer was revealed fairly early but twists continued to the end. Will be reading more from this author.

BarbaraBB And again a Japanese book with half a face on it. I see that all the time and I wonder why! 1y
Blaire @BarbaraBB my cover on the copy I had from the library actually had cherry blossoms...but these pics came up as a google image looked like maybe an ad for a tv series based on the books? Or a different edition of the books. Interesting that it‘s a common motif. 1y

Malice is everything I love in a crime thriller. It has a controlled pace that never feels rushed. It has style without the gimmick and it has a story that goes far beyond whodunit.
I would not call Malice as Higashino's best work, that honour belongs to The Devotion of Suspect X but it is up there amongst his best.

What do you think happens when a detective finds a murder without a motive. A murder of an author done brutally in his own locked room. And the suspects have rock-solid alibis. Except something doesn't add up...

'Malice' by Keigo Higashino is a perfect read for those readers who want the right twist in a crime thriller. Interesting, deceptive, and thrilling this book won't let you down.

Behind on posting reviews again. Sorry for spamming a bit today!

This was different than any detective/mystery novel I've read in recent memory. I loved it! I found the format so engaging & hard to put down. I have another Higashino title on my bookshelf & it jumped up my TBR. I've not read much Asian crime fiction, but I ❤️ what I have & I want to explore more Asian mystery/crime authors in the new year. I‘d love some recs if anyone has some!

A bestselling author is found dead. In his locked office. His wife and a fellow author are the ones who find him. What is especially intriguing is that the guilty party is arrested early on in the story. But Detective Kaga continues to puzzle over the case and digs far deeper and deeper until he finally figures it out. Another great plot twist from one of my favourite crime writers!

This was my second Higashino novel & every bit as good as The Devotion of Suspect X. A successful novelist, Hidaka, is found murdered in a locked room on the eve of his emigration from Japan to Canada. His friend, Nonoguchi, narrates the first part of the book; police investigator, Kaga, the next. This alternating POV adds to the twist-and-turn nature of the book. Higashino thwarted my hunches repeatedly and packed the book with genuine surprises!
