JazzFeathers It is very clear that the translator has no understanding of the fantasy language, let alone Tolkien's. His choice of words weren't inherently wrong, they still had no place in Middle-earth. Sentences that sounds like, "This is such a terrible news", or "Who knew we were so far ahead"... you know what l mean? You read these things and immediately, you're not in Middle-earth anymore. I laughed thrice reading The Council of Elrond ? 1w

I love Boromir's episode. It's so strong and complex. And l love that Sam starts to come into his own here.

Well, one could think, not a very eventful chapter, just people rowing in some boats. And yet so much happens here. Gollum.is revealed: Sam, Frodo and Aragorn knew it. the orcs, the Nazgul, the Argonath. Frodo trying to make a decision. Aragorn trying to make a decision. Boromir brooding.
It's just incredible.

It always annoys me when readers say there are too few women in Tolkien's work. That's simply not true. And anyway, if there were only Galadriel, l'd be more than satisfied. She's that good of a character.

In this chapter, we see both her power and her vulnerability, her wisdom and her ambition. All the phenomenal complexity of a very human and yet extremely ethereal being.

Clare-Dragonfly I have to disagree with you there! The books have hardly any women compared to the number of men, and those that appear have very little screen time. Eowyn will play a more active role, but so far we‘ve had: Arwen, who exists to be a symbol for Aragorn (I don‘t think she even spoke during her brief appearance); Galadriel, who is awesome but mostly a remote power preparing to fade, on a pedestal rather than active on the ground; and Goldberry… 1w

Clare-Dragonfly … who is a force of nature and a hostess, and to some extent a motivation for Tom, rather than a character herself. Some of the male characters (like Elrond) are more forces than people too, but all of the characters so far who are fully drawn people are male. 1w

JazzFeathers @Clare-Dragonfly As you imagine, l disagree 😜 Readers often judge the number of female characters in Tolkien by The Lord of the Rings, but there are plenty of female characters in The Silmarillion. And l disagree on the role of the characters you mentioned here. Galadriel is a Ringbearer, just like Elrond and Galdalf and she has a much more active part in Frodo's understanding of his task than, for example, Elrond. 1w

JazzFeathers Also, if we look at Celeborn and her dynamics, it's quite clear to me that she is the more powerful (not uncommon in Tolkien's couple), she is also often mention before her husband. So it's not just a reader's perception, it's how she's perceived by her people too. As for Arwen, l don't know if this is your first read of the book, but towards the end she gets a dialogue with Frodo that, for me, is one of the most powerful in the book. 1w

Yes, of course every fantasy reader knows that fantasy is considered more of a masculine genre, but l never really thought how contemporary fantasy is really sexualised. What you said about Martin is true, thought l've never elaborated it. 7d

JazzFeathers @Vansa But l've often thought that while most fantasy authors (men and women) portray female characters that are 'strong'because they act like men, Tolkien give value to many 'feminine' characteristics, that even men display. Aragorn, for example, displays caring, the ability to heal and rebuild, a love and respect for non-bookish knowledge. All 'feminine' characteristics. 7d

Riveted_Reader_Melissa To me Galadriel and Elrond play very equal roles in this trilogy. A way stop on the way, that imparts healing, rest, and much wisdom….as well as sets up the next section. Some of the divided views for women‘s roles in story I think come from those that have read the Silmarillion and other background information vs have not. Those that have imbibe them with very complex backstories that isn‘t really on the pages itself in LOTR. Both are right 5d

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ from their POV. Arwen has always bothered me though, even with more Silmarillion story. She & Aragorn have a story that parallels one in their myth/history or Lúthien & Beren, but she doesn‘t get to be nearly as involved with their adventures as Lúthien did, which is a shame to me anyway. Now the next women to show up in the LOTR series (on its own, no backstory) is the one I enjoy reading the most, but she is also the only one that got ⤵️

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa My impression about Arwen and Aragorn is that Tolkien really really wanted the story of Been and Luthien to be known, but he didn't know whether it would be because nobody seemed to be interested in publishing The Silmarillion. So he found a way to recount it even without recounting it. 5d

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yet, last time l read The Lord of the Rings, when l read Arwen's dialogue with Frodo, l remember thinking, 'She only gets to speak here, but she gives such powerful speech that to me it's enough'. To me, Tolkien was trying to give her the same strength of heart and mind Luthien has despite Arwen's shrunk screen time. My impression 😜 5d

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l think that part of the difficulty we have in seeing Tolkien's women's power is that in his stories the ability to renounce or let go is more powerful than the ability to conquer. And this is a very hard message to receive in our world, where renouncing and letting go is seen as the act of a weak person. 5d

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l agree. Tolkien tried to the very last to have The Silmarillion published with Lord of the Rings, because it was one long story to him, and it was impossible to adequately understand LotR without the Silmarillion. He was apparently right. 5d

I had just plowed through “The Hobbit,” but I had no money for a book, so I had to start negotiating. My mother and I agreed that I would read a book of her choosing and then I would get my mass market paperback with an alarmed Elijah Wood on the cover. I just had to read… “Pride and Prejudice.”

Family update- yesterday was hard to see my stoic dad so emotional. Mom‘s backsliding some and has contracted MRSA on top of everything else. Her release was supposed to be tomorrow which is now looking doubtful.

One would think that after reading this book several time, l would read leisurely.
I read this chapter from the edge of my seat!
Such great action, with a lot of urgency and progression. I almost panted at the end like for a long run.

Daisey I completely understand what you mean about the rereads. I would think by now I could do the same, but I‘m still completely involved in the story each time. 3w

JazzFeathers @wisherwishinguponastar I know, right? I think the way Jackson orchestrated the Moria episode is genius. He manage to retain the mood, the mystery, the tention and empathy of the book, and still turned it in somethis new and more his own. That's why l love his adaptation. 1w

Ah, Moria!
These are among my absolute favourite chapters in the book! And you know? Somehow l didn't remember how packed full of important event it is.
It's a very dense chapter, full of action, mystery, expectation and foreshadowing.
I love it!

I enjoyed this chapter because we see here the fellowship taking shape. And also l liked the way the mountain becomes a character, similar to what happens in The Hobbit.

And l find it interesting that it's pointed out how there are forces that don't belong to any part (like Tom, too), because it's easy to think that in such epic battle, everyone must take a stand. It is not so. The world is bigger that that.

I have been listening to some Tolkien-focused podcasts and is it just me or is the worst fate for anything in Middle-earth to “fade.” Elves that don‘t return to Valinor: fade. Bilbo and Gollum spending too much quality time with the ring: fade.

Roary47 Today a coworker slightly mentioned Lord of the Rings and I went into total nerd mode. He was impressed. Lol 🙈😅 3w

JazzFeathers @wisherwishinguponastar I think you are right. Though I think fadind is more sad than bad in Tolkien's stories. Something that is ultimately not avoidable. And yet, closely connected with changing, which is not bad, though it's certainly hard. 1w

The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings | J.R.R. Tolkien

I came home this evening and read the last chapter of Book 2 of The Fellowship of the Ring with Gandalf & Luthien. The final chapter is not so much an ending as a transition to a new phase of the journey. These are often published as three books, but really it‘s one long story. At the moment, I‘m just sad to be waiting a few days to continue this epic journey with these characters.

Daisey @Clare-Dragonfly It does kind of sneak up on you here. I do consider this readalong reading them all as Tolkien intended as one story. The pauses are just to help keep all of us on track together. Hoping your hold comes in quickly. 3w

We have hobbits that set out on a journey, met an unexpected leader, lost a good friend and guide, as well as run into a lot of other characters… as well as bad guys. Daisey When I read the final chapter now it reminds me this is just part 1 of a longer work. It‘s hard to sum up as it‘s really no conclusion, just the beginning of a new phase in the journey. 3w

I love the Council of Elrond. Every. Single. Time.
I know that many find it long and difficult, but to me, it's like a bonus in the story. It's a chapter in the book that contains many different stories, all connected. I mean: you're reading this book and you get to enjoy all these other stories.

It's fantastic!

BarbaraJean I‘m behind on my reading for #LOTRchapteraday, but slowly catching up. I do love this poem so: the nostalgia of both looking back and looking forward. It‘s so sad and yet also so beautiful in its acceptance of the world moving on. Just finished #LotRChapteraDay #FellowshipofTolkien Chapter VI Lothlorien. Gimli is a good sport even though he is met with injustice because he is a dwarf in an elves world. I‘m glad that they came to an agreement finally that several other elves can vouch for him. @Daisey @JazzFeathers

Daisey This is one of those places where Aragorn shows himself as a great leader when he steps up to say that they should all be treated as Gimli is treated to dispel the conflict. 4w

The fellowship has reached Lothlorien. Here they find a few days of peace, beauty, and rest. I always love the description of the elves‘ homes in the trees, but like the hobbits, I‘d rather not climb ladders to flets with no walls or railings. Also, we begin to see the development of the friendship between Legolas & Gimli.

TheAromaofBooks I thought the similarities and differences between here and Rivendell were interesting. Tolkien does such a great job of giving us the elves' “vibe“ in both places, yet showing us their differences as well! 4w

In so many way, this chapter mark the passage from 'the sequel to The Hobbit' to 'the Lord of the Rings'.
In the first drafts, Tolkien took a very long pause, almost one year long, more or less at the point of the dialogue between Frodo (who became Frodo in this chapter) and Gloin.

So many mentions from The Hobbit, and so many foundations for what will come next.

In comparison, this sounds more like a chapter of passage, thought it would be worth just for Offendel's appearance.
I was fascinated to learn this is the same Glorfindel that appears in the Silmarillion and falls fighting a balrog while trying to protect Earendil and his people. Earendil was Elrond's father. Glorfindel reincarnated to help Elrond as a way to sort of finish his tasks.

I believe this to be one of the most underrated chapters in the book... And it's actually fantastic!

Firstly, here's were Aragorn appears at his more complex because he shows different parts of his personality: the ranger, the experienced man, the scholar, the traveler, the friend, the lover, the fighter and the strategist. There is so much more to him than even such a long book as this can show. ⬇️

JazzFeathers There is again that sense of horror, especially in the way the nazgul appear or are sensed. I always get the chills when they appear in the road. And there's fantastic sense of dynamics, almost cinematography. I love the episode where Aragorn watches the flashes of light in the night, worrying for Gandalf. It is such a great chapter! 4w

TheAromaofBooks Yes!! I think this chapter illustrated so many of Aragorn's layers. His strong desire to do the right thing is front and center here! 4w

August was an exceptionally busy month. A new kitten... And some problem developing with one of my adult ones. Lots of work do to on my site and my automation (l'm becoming a business woman, guys!), lots of family committment. And... Holidays? What exactly do you mean with 'holidays'? 🤔😁

JazzFeathers I saw that leaf from the Book of Mazarbul when l visited the exhibition in Oxford. It was so exciting! 🤩 And you know? That was the first time l realised Tolkien was really also an illustrator. 4w

JazzFeathers @Vansa It really was. It was not an easy decision for me to fight to Oxford from Italy, but after long debate, l said to myself, 'So, are you going to miss it? Because once it's gone, it's gone. Does that sit well with you?'. It didn't. So l went. And l loved it. I was on a budget, so l didn't get everything l would have wanted, but at least, l saw the exhibit 🤩 4w

Poor Legolas is just “Thranduil‘s kid” and doesn‘t get called by his own name like everyone else 😂 It‘s funny, because I forget he‘s theoretically a prince. Elven royalty does not seem to do much sitting around and getting fed grapes, even if Elrond, Celeborn, and Galadriel stay safe in their beautiful homes and have other people come to them. #FellowshipofTolkien

I got comfy to catch up expecting another huge #LotRChapteraDay #FellowshipofTolkien Then I find out as I start reading it is an epic battle! The company gets a history lesson to find out what happened at Moria. Then the Orcs came! The hobbits impressed Aragorn with their battle skills. Gandalf utters his famous phrase which means he is lost to the company. Falling from the bridge and telling them to Fly! 😭😭😭

Frodo took watch while the others slept and was unnerved until the morning sunrise. Gimli was saddened by a slab with runes. 😢 @Daisey @JazzFeathers

I‘m trying right along with everyone, but we all know these chapters at brutal! Definitely not because of content, but being a long chapter in a very busy work life. I did read chapter 2 and 3. They have a meeting on what to do with the ring because evil forces want it. They create a party of 9 people in their fellowship and set out to destroy the ring. #FellowshipofTolkien #LotRChapteraDay

It‘s interesting to think about the fact that all our visual references must come from somewhere in our consciousness even when we‘re creating something wholly unique. This image is incredibly reminiscent of the imagery on many Arks at the front of traditional Jewish sanctuaries, and the elvish script looks a lot like a riff on Sanskrit… #LotRChapterADay #FellowshipOfTolkien

Vansa I don't think it looks like Sanskrit at all! Sanskrit is very different! Tolkien's inspirations were all from Nordic and Old German anyway. 1mo

IndoorDame @Vansa there‘s a difference between your conscious inspirations and your unconscious influences, maybe even more in visual art than writing. And I don‘t know what was actually in Tolkien‘s visual reference bank, it looking like one thing to me doesn‘t mean that was actually one of the things that sparked it for him. 1mo

Daisey @Vansa @IndoorDame I agree it‘s fascinating to look at something like this and consider what it reminds us of. It‘s been one of the really interesting aspects of attending international Tolkien events online. You see how people of different backgrounds view the same writing and art. 1mo

Vansa Well,we do know what Tolkien has been inspired by, he's written of it multiple times! And it wouldn't remind anyone with even a vaguely Indian background of Sanskrit, which as I've said, is entirely different. It's quite reductive to lump all East Asian scripts as “Sanskrit“, when there are other independent scripts that are as old or a little older,like the Dravidian scripts. 1mo

JazzFeathers Tolkien was a very curious man. He was interested in so many unexpected things (l only recently discovered he was a scholar of Dante's work). I imagine that a lot of these infiltrated his imagination even if he never realised it. And remember that he supported applicability, so, in a way, what the reader sees in the work is as important as what the author put in it. At least, that's how l understand Tolkien's applicability 😜 @Vansa @Daisey 4w

Since school‘s started again, it‘s harder to stay caught up with reading. This evening I decided to make a little time for hammock reading, but Luthien is also demanding attention. I‘ve made it to “The Council of Elrond.” I love this chapter and the history, but it‘s another one that can be overwhelming on a first read. Don‘t stress over keeping track of all the names and details at this point.

Seriously. I'm on holiday and I'm behind 😖
But I enjoyed this chapter, as usual. I love the chapters in Bree. In may respects, I see them as the big breath before the plunge.

The atmosphere of the inn is fantastic.

Tolkien famously said he didn't know who this stranger was when he suddenly appeared in the draft. He was quite a different character then, and still, a lot of Aragorn was already there.

The past few chapters I‘ve been trying to picture the ponies Tolkien is talking about & our Hobbit friends riding them. When I used to ride the ponies in the stables tended to be only a few inches shorter than the slighter horses like quarter horses . Are we talking about miniature horses (34-38 in), or Shetland ponies, or their Welsh or Highland cousins who are just a little taller, or some imagined mount? #LotRChapterADay #FellowshipOfTolkien
