The Fellowship of the Ring
The Fellowship of the Ring: Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings | J.R.R. Tolkien
The first volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGSOne Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind themIn ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.A unique, wholly realized other world, evoked from deep in the well of Time, massively detailed, absorbingly entertaining, profound in meaning. I‘m back from my little road trip with my friend and will now work on getting caught up with myself.

1. Valentine from the Mortal Instruments series is so annoying.
2. Boromir‘s death gets me EVERY TIME whether it‘s the book or the movie.
3. Laura Lippman lives right up the road in Baltimore.

This was slower on reread but still atmospheric and I loved visiting the magical places and old friends.

Snuck this picture of my 19yo reading The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time. Notice her tools for annotating. Color-coded post-it flags & pens for things like favorite quotes, character development moments, important plot points, etc. Anyone else read like this? She doesn't do this for every book, but she does for most of the classics that she reads. ♥

I thought a book series about a long & difficult journey would be appropriate for me right now. I‘m spending the next ~4 months in the USA, first as a Counsellor in a summer camp 🏕 in PA, then I have some time left for traveling. Would love to hear some food/sights/experiences recs from my #fellowLittens!

(1965) I was in the fifth grade when a teacher put her own copy in my hands. And y'all, I was a reader before but this has been foundational to my taste and interests (for good and bad) ever since. I shouldn't have let thirty years pass between re-readings, but one advantage in delay is that it felt as fresh again as it did familiar. I loved this book and love it still. There are a couple more (you may have heard) and I'll get to them very soon.

SRWCF As always, fantastic cover art! This one is on my TBR list. 😊 2mo
swynn @SRWCF Doesn't it just suit the book so well? And for good reason: it's an illustration by Tolkien himself of "Hobbiton-Across-the-Water" 2mo
SRWCF @swynn Oh! That makes it extra special! 2mo

When Mr. Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday with a party of special magnificence, there was much talk and excitement in Hobbiton.

@ShyBookOwl

AmandaBlaze I'm thinking of rereading these as part of #WyrdAndWonder in May. 2mo
swynn @AmandaBlaze Hope you enjoy the reread as much as I am! For me, the impetus was The Silmarilion, which I have never yet read, but which is coming up soon in another reading project. I should have reread these books much sooner and more often. 2mo

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

This quote from The Lord of the Rings series proves that living a fulfilling life doesn‘t have to be difficult. Every day, simply choose to make decisions that make you happy.

Every time I reread this series I find new beautiful depths. I‘m particularly enjoying the audio narrated by Andy Serkis this time.

“Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement for even the very wise cannot see all ends.”- Gandalf

It‘s Tolkien Reading Day! Today‘s theme from the Tolkien Society is Love and Friendship, so I‘m sharing this quote from when Sam, Merry, and Pippin pretty much tell Frodo he is stuck with their friendship and company on his journey.

I haven‘t been reading much Tolkien lately, but I am going to read another letter or two yet tonight.

Listening to the wonderful performance by Andy Serkis (AKA gollum in the movie). It is Awesome. The only thing I dislike is that he gives the hobbits some kind of Irish-adjacent accent that is sort of annoying, unfortunately. Are the Irish supposed to be short with hairy feet? Not sure! but it is the only criticism I have. I am loving the experience

Some of my notes while reading Fellowship of the Ring for the first time 😆 #middleearthmarch #lordoftherings #lotr #fellowshipofthering #currentlyreading #jrrtolkien

KCofKaysville @SeatoSkyes I did not even notice such details but overlooked them while being enthralled by the story and the characters. 4mo
SeaToSkyes @KCofKaysville since this is my first time reading the stories after only seeing the films, I'm trying to pay close attention to the differences. Maybe too close! 4mo
KCofKaysville @SeaToSkyes Definitely the movies skip a lot. Where is Tom Bombadill? 4mo

SeaToSkyes @KCofKaysville yes! I believe I just got to the part where we meet him 4mo
shanaqui They're both first cousins once removed and second cousins once removed: Frodo's mother was Bilbo's first cousin from Bilbo's mother's side, and Frodo's father was Bilbo's second cousin on Bilbo's father's side. Given all that complexity, makes sense for Frodo to call Bilbo his uncle -- in the same way, I called some of my parents' extended family “uncle“ and “aunt“ as a kid even though they were technically cousins once/twice removed! 4mo
SeaToSkyes @shanaqui it is easy for Frodo to call him uncle but why did Tolkien have to make it so complicated! Lol 😂 4mo

Admittedly I saw the movies first and do actually prefer them to the book. I loved the plot and all the characters, the world building was so well developed and I got lost in all the adventure🥰However I did find the constant singing irritating and found the overly long writing style intimidating, it's probably because I'm so used to reading YA.
Overall, I did like it and will definitely continue for more escapism.

Yesterday we hosted an extended edition Lord of the Rings movie and food marathon for Dillon‘s 69th (27th) birthday. We started at 10:15 AM and ended a bit off schedule at nearly 11 PM. It was a fun day and I enjoyed my all day cooking, eating, and chatting loudly over the movies about all sorts of nerdiness. #lotrmoviemarathon

Some great books in 2021. I didn‘t quite make my 52 book goal this year, but I read so so much more than I tracked on Goodreads. Once again my kindle was filled with endless fanfiction in addition to the real books I‘ve read. My goal for 2022 is also 52 and starting the year with COVID is providing some good reading time. 2021 was the year I finally read the Lord of the Rings!

SamanthaMarie I still need to read LOTR 😅😅 I'm so sorry you have Covid!! How are you feeling? 6mo
LeahBergen I hope you‘re well on the mend! 6mo

Another one I read during my first hiatus. A friend and I tried to start a book club together but changed it to a game night so we could include our partners in the fun.

While I‘m currently sitting in the camp of the movie was better I‘m excited to continue the series in 2022.

I‘ve watched the Peter Jackson movies countless times. This is my first time to read/listen to the book. I loved Andy Serkis reading the Hobbit and I knew this was next and it was worth the wait. I enjoyed it immensely. I‘m looking forward to The Two Towers.

I‘m almost finished listening to the 1st half of the audiobook & only just now thought to post accompanying artwork from the sketch and mapbooks we gave my son last Christmas based on where I‘m at in the book. So I‘m catching up now.
