Book 1 of the readathon (and the series) completed!

Uhtred is an English lord that grew up with Danes. He learnt to fight with them, loved them, but circumstances now find him fighting against them, for King Alfred of Wessex.

I find Uhtred to be much more likeable in the book compared to the TV series (though I like him in both) and I think the narrative style of the book is part of that reason :)

Really enjoying my current project, getting a good deal of #audiostitching done. After watching the recent season of the TV adaptation i really felt like some good old historical fiction again and am consequently learning about Alfred the Great and the Danelaw. #Edutainment at its best.

These books are soooo good and Uhtred is FINE! 😂 Going from Outlander to this I just am filled with adventure and love! If you love Outlander then you will love this as well. Netflix also has made a TV series about it which is really good too! Uhtred is a warrior who has so much courage and strength. And the journeys he takes will blow you away! It is about Danes, England, Wessex, & KingAlbert. I can‘t wait for more!❤️❤️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ALL THE STARS!

This was so much fun to read! I love this period of history: the time of the Vikings and their raids. This story is mostly about Alfred the Great and his mission to save England from their sweeping conquests, but it is told thru Uhtred‘s eyes. Uhtred, born English, captured and trained for war by the enemy Ragnar. Oh my goodness, I was riveted and breathless in nearly every scene. These characters 100% were ALIVE to me.

I‘ve used this #map as much as any other in any book I‘ve read, following Uhtred‘s battles with the Danes (Vikings) and the English. #bookmap

The author has also included a “Place-Names” list on the following pages since the spelling of the towns in the 800‘s was so different than what we know now. For ex: Lundene = London, but some are less obvious. This has been so helpful to me!

TrishB I did a lot of checking of the place names when I started this series. As you say, some are more obvious than others. 1y

My review for The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell is up on my new blog 🙊 (http://aweasleyinmiddleearth.blogspot.co.at/2018/05/review-of-last-kingdom-by-be...). I wasn't too convinced about this particular book, but after reading the next few, this series is definitely my favourite historical fiction series so far 💚

1. So many! Probably most interested in the early middle ages, but I wouldn't want to stay long!
2. Scandinavia - Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland... and/or New Zealand... both have so much history and culture to explore!
3. Read The Last Kingdom (tagged, same time period), which was pretty awesome 💙💜❤

bookandcat Sounds awesome! Have you read Kristin Lavransdatter or The Sterkarm Handshake? (Middle age Norway and 1500s Britain respectively) 2y
TCLinrow @bookandcat Not yet but they sound awesome! I'll definitely give them a go at some point 😊 I've only started branching out genre wise in the last couple of years... when I was younger I only read fantasy and sci-fi, and the occasional non-fiction if it was about something I was in to... now I realise how much I was missing! 😲 2y

Was trying to listen to this the other night at work and it was talking about screaming women and the “trophies” of war. I get it-it‘s trying to be accurate to the times and what not but I just..can‘t. There are way too many books out there for me to have to suffer listening to violence against women. It‘s not right for me, but someone else may like it

EatsSleepsReads

I once asked a bishop whether there were any women in heaven. ‘Of course there are, my lord,‘ he answered, happy that I was taking an interest in doctrine, ‘many of the most blessed saints are women.‘ ‘I mean women we can hump, bishop.‘ He said he would pray for me. Perhaps he did.

Brilliant way to insert humour into what could otherwise be a grim and depressing book. Loving this book so far!!

I loved this book, and look forward to (eventually) reading the rest of the series. Uhtred is much more likeable than in the TV series, and the writing is excellent. It really captures his struggle to determine which group he identifies with - the Danes or the Saxons, and the reasons for his allegiances with certain people of both parties. ❤️💕

Most say, "The Last Kingdom" is like "Game of Thrones", but it's not. Cornwell's series is more akin to the History Channel's "Vikings", telling of the Danish Invasions of England in the 9th Century. Fast-paced, and well-researched, I loved this book from Page 1: "My name is Uhtred."
