Agnes Gray
Agnes Gray | Anne Bront
In her Introduction to an edition of "Agnes Grey," Barbara A. Suess writes "Bronte provides a portrait of the governess that is as sympathetic as her fictional indictment of the shallow, selfish moneyed class is biting." Anne Bronte relies on her own personal involvement in her duties as a home teacher to bring Agnes Grey to life. Agnes, a rector's daughter, must take employment as a governess to help her family make financial ends meet. But her situations with the spoiled, self-obsessed Bloomfield children and later with the ruthless Murray family forces her into a lonely, humiliating experience that is a wearying one extraordinarily blossoming into a romantic relationship with the local vicar, Edward Weston. Agnes' concern for her family brings her to these unfortunate trials where she suffers stupid and egotistic proprietors and their over-indulged progeny. She was not able to foresee the hardships she would have to undergo along with the class snobbery to which she was also subjected. And yet a career as a governess was the only "respectable" job available to an unmarried woman in Victorian England. Bronte's simple and uncomplicated rendition of these sordid affairs made circumstances surrounding such brutish conditions authentic enough to necessitate investigation and improvement.

Agnes Grey decides to become a governess when her father encounters money troubles. She is passionate and determined but gets stuck with families who‘s morals she judges and isn‘t treated the kindest. An interesting insight in to what it was like to be a governess in the 19th century, with issues of class and morality as well as other things, with a sprinkling of a lovely love story towards the end. (Cont. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)

i.z.booknook The language was beautiful and Agnes‘ determined character is very engaging. My favourite does remain Wuthering Heights but this was really fun to finally read! 3mo

April: AGNES GREY by Anne Bronte. I loved reading this with the #hashtagbrigade led by the indomitable @BarkingMadRead. Agnes and her difficulties in 19th century England has stayed with me throughout the year. 💙

Anne‘s love story in Agnes Grey is the flip side of Emily‘s in Wuthering Heights! Agnes and Weston make such a sedate and prudent pair they are very nearly wallpaper boring. No sturm and drang aside from a parting with a beloved terrier. That‘s as dramatic as it gets.

Lots of upper crust snark, as per usual, but I did feel a tad sorry for the impudent charges of Agnes‘ because how could they be anything but horrid with little genuine autonomy?

As I said previously I don't doubt Anne Bronte went through hardships as a Governess or in her personal life, but I think this would have served better as a straightforward memoir than a work of fiction.

There was nothing much going on throughout the novel, but it also felt very rushed at the same time. There were long passages that could be summarized in a few sentences and too many unpleasant characters to make this read enjoyable.

I don't doubt Anne Bronte's experiences as a governess were difficult but this book drags on so much. Thankfully I only have 5 chapters left of this.

Chapter 2 gave me so many concerns. Seven-year-old child torturing animals is never a good sign. His father doing the same thing when he was young??? also not a great sign😱

It‘s the story of a girl who goes out to be a governess because her father didn‘t invest his money well and they became poor. It was a fictional expose on what it was really like to be a governess. Spoiled kids, parents that don‘t help and just blame, away from home, little recognition by society in general. It turned into a subtle love story, and I enjoyed that. I definitely wasn‘t as impressed in writing style as Charlotte and Emily.

Late review but enjoyed this #pemberlittens buddy read. Agnes was a frustrating character and never stood up for herself. But also being a governess is a shit job when entitled rich parents just blame you for their spoiled kids behavior 🙄 So much sympathy for her and I'm so glad she got her happy ending
Thanks @BarkingMadRead as always for the great hashtags and commentary

My first BC with the #pemberlittens. I enjoyed it, and of course, adored the group! I loved TENANT AT WF HALL more, mostly because Agatha wasn't as assertive as I would have liked. What can you do as a governess in the early 1800s except be abused a lot, by both parents and students. As much as I love Jane Eyre, Anne's novel gave a truer picture of how difficult life was for a governess--without the crazy lady in the attic! ⬇️

dabbe Thanks, @BarkingMadRead, for the hilarious updates that kept us going, and thanks #pemberlittens, for being such a fun and insightful group. I'm looking forward to CRANFORD; my book arrives tomorrow! #wootwoot 💙💚💙 (edited) 11mo

Well, I was hoping to love this, or at least like it, because Anne is my favorite (least disliked?) Brontë sister, based on reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. That didn‘t happen. I found Agnes obnoxious in her malaise. She just sits around all the time, wishing her charges would be less awful but never doing anything about anything. The ending saved this from a pan. Thanks to @BarkingMadRead for the hashtags that saved the day! #PemberLittens

ravenlee The first charges Agnes had, with the vile little boy, did remind me of a Sherlock Holmes story: The Copper Beeches (I haven‘t read it but have seen the Jeremy Brett episode many times). At one point the little boy in that is called “the odious child.” 11mo

A lesser know Brontë sister for me
Young female of impoverished circumstances becomes governess ✔️
Father married above station so girl children extremely well educated ✔️
Batshit crazy first wife locked in the attic ❌
angst riddled wealthy landowner moping around moors ❌

My first time through this Bronte book. I think the #chapteraday format with the #Pemberlittens works well for it, as I like Agnes but her timidity at times drove me crazy. I definitely would not have wanted to be a governess! 😱 slow to get there, even for a short book, but the ending made me happy. 🐶❤️

While I did like this one, I think I preferred The Tenant of Wildfell Hall more. Agnes presents as a bit timid MC, but she has some strength of conviction. As a governess, she sees her share of terrors as charges, but that also does not diminish her internal resolve to do good. Chapter 23: Rosalie is unhappy and Agnes makes a break for it! #rosaliegavemescarlettoharavibes #ikindoffeelbadforher #andalsoherhusband #runagnesrun #pemberlittens

TheAromaofBooks It's hard when people reap what they sow... you feel bad for them but also can't help but realize how much they brought on themselves. I do think Rosalie is SO young and her mother did zero to help her actually find a husband who would be kind to her; she just encouraged Rosalie to focus on status and money, and here we are 😕 11mo
TheAromaofBooks Side note, I was mildly horrified at Rosalie's attitude towards her daughter - only a month or two old and she's already viewing her as a rival/jealous of her freedom 😬 11mo
See All 23 Comments
AllDebooks I feel Rosalie is very much a product of her time. How different she may have been if guided to be more compassionate and less concerned with status and wealth? Run for the hills, Agnes and don't look back!! Defo Scarlet O'Hara vibes, petulant, cossetted and privileged! 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly Sir Thomas is pretty awful! He rides past his wife and her friend and all he does is turn and give them a creepy stare, no hello or anything! Now I see why Rosalie is disappointed in having a girl… I wouldn‘t want to try for a boy if I were her 😅 11mo
TheBookHippie @TheAromaofBooks HA I caught that too -it‘s my mother in a nutshell. Fascinating to read someone else seeing a baby as a rival 🤯😵‍💫😝 11mo
TheBookHippie @AllDebooks yes SCARLETT!!! Oh my word 🎯 11mo
TheBookHippie The poor baby. 😵‍💫 11mo
Bookwormjillk Scarlett is a perfect comparison! Loved how Agnes found out Weston wasn‘t there and found an excuse to leave shortly after. Did she ever visit the library though??!!! 11mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I don‘t think she did 😳😳 11mo
ravenlee I read Wollstonecraft‘s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman recently, and her complaint that “education” as it then existed for women can only create shallow, vain, selfish creatures who view their own offspring as rivals - well, it seems a blueprint for the two Rosalies we‘ve read since then. 11mo
BarkingMadRead @ravenlee it definitely is! 11mo
Morr_Books The whole time, I just wanted Rosalie to show Agnes the library. Sigh. Also, wouldn't it be funny if Weston is hanging out with Agnes' family while she is with Rosalie. 11mo
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books omg could you imagine?!! 11mo
Ruthiella Yes, run Agnes! I do feel bad for Rosalie. But you know she just wants to keep Agnes as a pet for when she needs validation. 11mo
willaful I think we see Rosalie's own mom's feelings in Rosalie's attitude towards her daughter, which explains a lot. And sadly, even today we have parents who believe “I had to deal with it, you do too!“ instead of trying to make their children's lives better than their own. So alien to me.

I'm so eager to see how this ends! @Morr_Books I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you were right! It seems exactly what would happen.
11mo
mcctrish Any sympathy for Rosalie (Sir Thomas does sound an absolute nightmare) vanished as soon as Agnes offered some suggestions that were IMMEDIATELY shot down. FYI Rosalie, by the time your daughter is ready to come out there will be no competition from you cuz your unhappiness will have made you a shrew 🤦🏻‍♀️ get the hell out of dodge, Agnes 11mo
mcctrish @Morr_Books maybe Agnes‘ mom has had a gentleman caller 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 11mo
dabbe I may be off here, but I drew a comparison between Rosalie and Estella (stated earlier) but now Daisy from GATSBY as well. Perhaps another reason Rosalie didn't want a girl is similar to how Daisy didn't want one either--because they both know what a shallow life that daughter is in for. That would have to mean, though, that Rosalie does have a caring heart somewhere in there. I like to think she does, but it won't be enough to save her. 11mo
willaful @dabbe Have you ever read Delafield's Thank Heaven Fasting? It's quite chilling on that topic. 11mo
dabbe @willaful No, I haven't, but I just stacked it, thanks to you! 🤗 11mo
DebinHawaii @willaful Stacked it as well. Thank you! 11mo

Finished both Agnes Grey #PemberLittens and Trespasses

Currently reading Spring Cannot Be Cancelled and Glory

Leniverse I'm currently reading Glory and Trespasses. 😄 Plan on finishing them both this weekend. 11mo
Cinfhen Thoughts on the two #WomansPrize books @Leniverse @AnneCecilie ??? 11mo
Leniverse @Cinfhen I can see why Glory was nominated for both the Booker and the Women's Prize. It's razor sharp satire. But it took me a good 150 pages to connect with it. It is perhaps a bit heavy on the literary devices and unnecessarily long. Trespasses is really great on the description of NI in the 70s, but a bit light on plot (so far). And I don't get the MCs obsession with the married guy twice her age. 11mo
See All 12 Comments
Cinfhen I actually bailed on both books @Leniverse but I might try and go back to Tresspasses ( this time in print) if it makes the shortlist - im not going to attempt Glory again - I‘m not a huge fan of satire. Are you attempting the longlist? Any standouts? 11mo
Leniverse @Cinfhen When I've finished these two I'll have read 9/16. There are two I'm not interested in, leaving me with five more before Wednesday 😆 Clearly not gonna happen, but I'll do my best. My favourites so far are Black Butterflies and Wandering Souls. They're both debuts and not flawless, but they are haunting and immersive. 11mo
Cinfhen I still haven‘t been able to get a copy of Black Butterflies - I‘ve read 9 bailed on two and have one ( Fire Rush) I‘m about to start on audio @Leniverse Overall I‘ve been really happy with all my reads - I think my favorite might be 11mo
Leniverse @Cinfhen I'm reading Bandit Queens next. It's one I'm looking forward to. I haven't read Fire Rush yet either, but I think that might do well on audio! 11mo
AnneCecilie @Cinfhen @Leniverse I found Trespasses a gripping a read. I think the married guy is just one of these charismatic men that doesn‘t seem to age and just pull people to them. I have 150 pages left in Glory and I‘m not sure what I think. Guess it comes down to the last pages. 11mo
Leniverse 50 pages left of Glory now. I'm invested in finding out what will happen but all the repetitions are exhausting me. 11mo
AnneCecilie @Leniverse I‘m finding those a little annoying. There‘s just too many of them. 11mo
Leniverse And the endless lists... 11mo
AnneCecilie @Leniverse I haven‘t noticed the lists, so either I haven‘t made to them jet or they haven‘t annoyed me. 11mo

Chapter 22: Agnes visits Rosalie and hangs with the rooks #whatahorridhuman #isitpossiblethatshesworse #nowestontobefound #pemberlittens

Clare-Dragonfly I like Rosalie more in this chapter, maybe because I feel bad for her! It‘s awful how she‘s dangling men after her and expecting everyone to treat her well without her treating them well, but she is actually making an effort to be nice to Agnes. I am curious whether her mother-in-law is really as bad as she says. 11mo

BarkingMadRead @mcctrish @peanutnine I would for sure have gone to look for it! 11mo
ravenlee Rosalie is still the worst. 11mo
Ruthiella Poor Rosalie. Her life is empty and she doesn‘t have the skills to make it better. As a contrast to Agnes, Agnes is better off. 11mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 💯💯 11mo
TheBookHippie @ravenlee Yes. Phew. 😵‍💫 11mo
willaful In a modern romance, Agnes would sneak off the library and Weston would somehow be there. And things would get... interesting. 😂

The husband seems to be as bad as she says. The mother-in-law did offer to leave, so maybe not as bad.

11mo
peanutnine @willaful 🤣🤣🤣 so true! 11mo
dabbe I even more see a parallel with Rosalie and Estella from GREAT EX. Both break men's hearts left and right; both marry a spider of a man; both get what they deserve. And, I agree! Where is the library, damn it? Find it soon, Agnes, or get the hell out of there! 🤣 11mo

peanutnine @Ruthiella exactly. She's probably only reaching out now cause she's bored and thinks Agnes has nothing better to do than entertain her 11mo
dabbe I'd like to think that Agnes is like us and is curious to see how Rosalie has been faring. And she might care about Rosalie. A little bit. 11mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣🤣 11mo
mcctrish This was not what I thought was going to happen but Agnes needs a kick in the pants so it works for me 11mo

Clare-Dragonfly Also, I love Rosalie being all “my baby is the best ever, I guess, I can‘t be bothered interacting with her” 😂 11mo
willaful Maybe Rosalie is hoping that Agnes will be impressed with her luxurious new life, and that would make her feel a little better about how miserable she is? I wanted Rosalie to get hers but now I feel sorry for her. I'm still not sure she isn't going to cause more trouble though -- but we are pretty close to the end, so maybe not. 11mo
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly Yes! Not to mention the fact that “unfortunately, the baby is a girl”. Ugh! 11mo
AnnR I'm not even sure why Agnes felt compelled to go. Agnes could have easily said she was busy helping her mother (which was true) and couldn't possibly visit. 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly @julieclair Yeah… unfortunately I‘m not even surprised by that attitude. Except for the whole “he will never forgive me” thing, which I hope is a joke because they‘ve got plenty of time to have a boy! 11mo

TheBookHippie @IndoorDame Shake …smack 🙄🙄🙄WAKE-UP 🤯😝 11mo
TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk I want yo scream PULLLYOURSELFTOGETHER … 11mo
AnnR The social conventions of this time period sometimes drive me batty. Plus, let's face it, unemotional Agnes really isn't the sort to wear her heart on her sleeve. 11mo
Ruthiella He held her hand for a few seconds too long AND he asked her if she cares if she ever meets him again. Translation to 2023 mores and conventions, he‘s asking if she wants to go for coffee sometime. 😂 HE LIKES HER! ❤️ 11mo
willaful I confess, Weston has sunk in my esteem. :-( He seems to have been so ready to think poorly of Agnes and well of Rosalie. I guess one mustn't blame a poor gentleman for having his head turned by a pretty face, but I sure hope he puts a little effort into getting Agnes by the end! Signed, disappointed romance reader. 😂 11mo
mcctrish @Ruthiella EXACLTY ❤️❤️ how will he conspire to be in her new ‘hood?! 11mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk I laughed out loud to your comment #justletmegohometocry 11mo
dabbe Oh, the DRAMA of the 1800s. Weston holds her hand = #hubbahubba. #getaclueagnes What am I still waiting for in this book? 1. To see how Rosalie handles her married life (I can't help but wish that it'll be a disappointment). 2. Will Weston and AG or won't they? Do we get a happy ending or not? I don't need a “Reader, I married him“ moment, but something has to happen, right? (edited) 11mo
Morr_Books @dabbe I actually have been thinking that we may never get any additional info on Rosalie now that Agnes is leaving, but maybe Weston will show up at the school, and she will get some info from him. 11mo
dabbe @Morr_Books That would be more realistic, wouldn't it? I mean, Rosalie uses and abuses Agnes for years, then swats her away like a fly and moves onward to her travels in southern Europe with her beautiful husband and Ashby Park. It would be realistic to think that would be the perfect ending. When Rosalie's done with Agnes, Agnes be done with Rosalie! 🤣😊💙 11mo

TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk oh I do agree! 11mo
Ruthiella Yup, that grandpa is a real piece of work. I‘m happy at least that Agnes is away from the Murrays and with her mother. That‘s some comfort, at least. 11mo
Bookwormjillk @TheBookHippie ohhhh good find 11mo
dabbe Found this interesting article re: Anne Bronte and how AGNES GREY was written before JANE EYRE and that AGNES was more of a feminist novel than Charlotte's Jane. Interested to hear what you #pempberlittens think. The link is below:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vgw5x14GOmRCN_nvjb3cwzmHG8GxRlsh/view?usp=shari...
11mo
willaful @dabbe oh cool, thanks for sharing.

I was doing some reading about ToWH and discovered that Charlotte suppressed it for years after Anne's death. I think she had some serious jealousy issues.

@bookwormjillk she is an awesome woman. @TheBookHippie so Agnes's mom likely based on her own mother? I may be about to do a deep dive on Bronte history.... 😁
11mo
TheBookHippie @willaful Bronte is my favorite basically because these dark books saved preteen & teenager me .. they‘re part of me. I do think it‘s her mother in this character. I read in a feminist article that Charlotte waited to be sure it was published since they were women but 😝 that was eons ago ! 11mo
TheBookHippie @willaful I think it was strong willed and minded females fighting to get it done 👀. I‘m sure the rivalry was 🤯🤯🤯. Survival of the fittest! Ha. I do like all of Bronte all the sisters. 11mo
TheBookHippie @dabbe I think sisterhood by blood and not when you‘re fighting to get anything done is complicated. What a time they lived in. To try and pit them against each other takes away their sheer talent as female writers and makes it look like that‘s what females do. I think Agnes is like nonfiction and Jane is romance. Styling differences. As were they as people. 11mo
mcctrish Grandpa is a total shit! What will the Murray‘s say when Agnes drops this bomb?! ?? I must say that book about Mama Brontë looks intriguing @TheBookHippie and I have to say when we read Wuthering Heights in high school I thought I‘d died and gone to heaven 11mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish same. I read it in middle school! 11mo
eeclayton @dabbe Thanks for sharing. I didn't know that Agnes had been written first. I see where the comparison of the two books come from, but I think it's unfair to compare them because they focus on such different things. 11mo
willaful @mcctrish @TheBookHippie I loved the 1930s movie but the book was too much for me as a teen. I should really read it again now. I adored all of Janes books though (except I think I might not have read Shirley. Have to keep that in mind for the future too.) 11mo
willaful @mcctrish @TheBookHippie I loved the 1930s movie but the book was too much for me as a teen. I should really read it again now. I adored all of Janes books though (except I think I might not have read Shirley. Have to keep that in mind for the future too.) 11mo
mcctrish @willaful I reread WH in my 30‘s and I totally did not have the same reaction as I did at 15 🤣 teenage angst might be needed to appreciate Heathcliffe 11mo
willaful @mcctrish I was more the “Non-threatening Boys“ magazine type. 😂 https://simpsonswiki.com/wiki/Non-Threatening_Boys_Magazine 11mo
dabbe @TheBookHippie TOTALLY agree! We get a much more serious look at what it was like to truly be a governess in Agnes more than we do with Jane and her ONE pupil. It's like realism vs romanticism with the two sisters giving both views. 🤗 11mo
dabbe @eeclayton It seems the author of that article is definitely #teamagnes and wanted to make the case that Anne got there first with her governess book. Anne's works have always been slighted in favor of WH and JE, so perhaps the author wanted to give a big shoutout for Anne. 😊 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly Grandpa might take the coveted #worstcharacteraward but competition is fierce! 11mo

AllDebooks I've got a feeling we've not heard the last from Rosalie 😕 11mo
Ruthiella Bye Rosalie! Don‘t let the door hit ya on the way out! 😆 I am hoping Matilda is going to be less of a manipulative meanie! 11mo
Bookwormjillk And another murdered animal. I would never make it in Agnes Grey times between the lack of jobs for women and the random animal slaughter. 11mo
mcctrish @Ruthiella goodbye to bad rubbish in Rosalie‘s case and I think Matilda is only mean to creatures ( but not as bad as the first bunch of heathens) 11mo
mcctrish @AllDebooks it‘s rather ominous that Mr Weston thinks it‘s a bad match too 11mo
mcctrish Could Mrs Murray lack any more empathy?! 11mo
willaful @AllDebooks -- yup. She's going to do something horrible still. Or at least be intensely miserable. But I vote horrible. 🙄

@mcctrish He's definitely unnervingly blind to her faults. She's very good at hiding them. But I think he'll be enlightened. Hopefully not in the worst possible way.
11mo
Clare-Dragonfly If it weren‘t for the animal sadism I think Matilda would be my favorite character. I feel bad for her natural interests being squashed! 11mo
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly I think Matilda has potential? She's obviously not the type of person the author likes, but in real life, I think she could grow out of her bloodthirstiness. She strikes me as a late bloomer. (edited) 11mo
Morr_Books I love the bluebonnets scene. I just saw bluebonnets and a local park too. I'm happy to take a break from Rosalie even if is short lived. Also, what is the deal with characters in this book being cruel to animals? 11mo
dabbe @Morr_Books This disturbed me, too! In trying to find some kind of a guide for this book, I stumbled upon a passage that stated that a lot of this story is autobiographical--including the killing-of-the-birds scene. Does this mean that Anne = Agnes? I think it's too complicated for an answer yet. Thoughts? 🤔 11mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe it‘s definitely possible, I‘m sure that people then didn‘t have the same feelings about animals that we do now. They didn‘t often keep pets, animals usually served a purpose and that‘s it 😢 11mo

TheAromaofBooks In the last chapter Agnes mentioned the biblical parable of the rich man who had many sheep, but when an unexpected visitor arrives, he takes his poor neighbor's only lamb to serve it for supper. I kept thinking about that throughout this chapter as Rosalie used her power not just to try and win over Mr. W, but to actively sabotage Agnes's character/any chance of future happiness along the way. 11mo
Bookwormjillk Hoping for a happy ending 🤞 11mo

IndoorDame I like that her “love poem” is more of a slam poem about what a bitch Rosalie is to her! 😂 11mo
AnnR I'm cheering for a happy ending, too. Go, team Agnes! 11mo
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame right?!? I wish she was more outgoing about it, she needs to tell Rosalie no, instead of staying home all the time like a prisoner! @Bookwormjillk still hoping for a happy ending myself!! 11mo
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼slam poem! 11mo
TheBookHippie 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻for happiness ♥️ 11mo
TheBookHippie @TheAromaofBooks makes me wonder what her real life was like!!!! 11mo
Ruthiella Let‘s see what happens. Rosalie is behaving terribly like the spoiled child she is. I don‘t think she can even conceive that Agnes might have feelings that will be hurt. 😖 But I don‘t think Weston is like Mr. Hatfield and so easily fooled. 11mo
willaful I'm worried we're going to get a Mansfield Park situation.... not that I care what happens to Rosalie. 11mo
mcctrish I think the fact Mr W is asking after Agnes has sent Rosalie into full psycho mode! #slampoem is perfect @IndoorDame I‘d not think Mr W‘a head will be turned in the least but it sounds like time is running out 😬 #getthebitchhitched so Agnes can see Mr W again 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly Ugh, Rosalie is so sociopathic! She really doesn‘t seem to care that other people have feelings! Not impressed with Agnes in this chapter either. “Oh, only ~*~I~*~ can understand this special man” 🙄 11mo
willaful @Clare-Dragonfly oh, interesting point. 11mo
dabbe Is it just me? I can't help but see parallels between Rosalie and Estella from GREAT EX (crazy Havisham aside). Two self-serving narcissistic women using men as their playthings. More than Agnes finding happiness with Weston, I want Rosalie to PAY. 11mo

eeclayton @Bookwormjillk I find this part of Agnes so relatable. Thinking about the man all the time, then being completely useless when the opportunity presents itself -- been there, done that! 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk YES, dame! 😂 Dear autocorrect, I wrote “same” but we‘ll go with it! 11mo
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly ha! I love it. 11mo
Ruthiella Rosalie claims she would have sent the footman back for Agnes? I doubt it. 🙄 I think Mr. Weston was looking at Agnes the whole time…waiting to see if there was any way to catch her attention. 11mo

Bookwormjillk 🤞 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly @IndoorDame I agree! I think if anything he‘s surprised that Rosalie isn‘t as empty-headed as he thought. 11mo
willaful My secret hope: Hatfield (?) will get a huge inheritance and Rosalie will suffer torments, bwahaha! Though of course that would also reward him and he's a horrible human being too.

So someone on mastodon was saying that Anne was the true feminist of the Brontes and... I'm really not seeing it. Maybe I'd have to read her other book again.
11mo
BarkingMadRead @willaful that would be amazing, so long as he marries someone other than Rosalie 🤣 11mo
willaful @BarkingMadRead Yes, and someone who will make him abjectly miserable for the rest of his life. 😈 11mo
BarkingMadRead @willaful yessssssss 🤣🤣 11mo

dabbe I do think a feminist “blooming“ of an idea is shown in THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL. Helen does leave her husband (unheard of then)--even though she goes back to nurture him when he's dying. In Agnes, we get to witness her passions because she's telling us the story, but she hasn't exerted herself outwardly yet. I'm hoping she finds a way to show her true self and blast these a-holes to kingdom come. #aweebitharsh #buttheyarejerks #teamagnes 11mo

Bookwormjillk Should we be calling people Rosie instead of Karen? (I don't call people Karen by the way. I have 4 Karens in my family and I feel terrible for them.)

It took me a loooong time to get through this chapter. Why do so many people kill birds and kick dogs and cats in this book?

This has been deep thoughts by Jill.
11mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk it‘s starting to look that way 🤣🤣 #dontbearosie 11mo
mcctrish I was feeling badly for Agnes, would the mom even let her talk or explain herself?! But so happy she has the dog for companionship ( Matilda better let her keep it 😡) but stumbling upon the whole Mr Hatfield/Rosalie drama is just bonkers! He is an AWFUL man! If R thinks he‘s going to take a brush off well, saddle up!!! I almost felt sorry for R with her ramble about Sir Thomas Ashby and what all the mothers say and what he does and doesn‘t do. 11mo
mcctrish But then R throws her purse at Agnes to get her out of the way so she can hang out with douchbag Hatfield 11mo
dabbe I'm very worried about the terrier. That's mostly all I could think of during this chapter. Rosalie reminds me of Bathsheba Everdene in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD ... only Bathsheba was the main character and not a snobby-nosed sidekick like Rosalie. Heck, she's not even a sidekick! #sheneedstobekickedintheass 11mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I legit gasped when he kicked the dog, I was so mad!! 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly I am glad Agnes is taking care of the dog but I‘m getting pretty annoyed with her! How freaking far gone is she that Weston can snatch a book out of her hand and she‘s all “oh, he‘s being brotherly”? 🙄 And she won‘t report the actual conversation with him, but she does report every obnoxious word of Rosalie‘s conversation with Hatfield. Plus, I get a slut-shamey vibe from her disapproval. Not that Rosalie doesn‘t deserve all the disapproval. 11mo

AllDebooks Lol 🙌 wasn't sure about Agnes at first. She came across a bit insipid and meek. However, given the constraints of her social position and her babyfied upbringing, I can understand why. I really hope she blossoms into a firecracker. Her chats with the parishioners were lovely 12mo

ravenlee @AllDebooks I‘ve been thinking the same, that Agnes is kind of a drip. (Largely because I‘ve caught up over just a few days and get larger doses of her) But I am starting to have hope now! 12mo
mcctrish I am liking the inner Agnes dialogue, we may never get her to speak her mind but if we can hear her thoughts then she may be saved. I still like Matilda 12mo

mcctrish Matilda is hilarious and I love her! I continue to wish Agnes had more spirit and she gave back to the 2 sisters! 12mo
julieclair Matilda is definitely a much spunkier character than I would have expected to find in a Bronte book! (Or any book from that era, actually.) She feels very modern. 12mo
Ruthiella Watch that new curate! Is he going to be the love interest? 12mo
Morr_Books I'm glad I am not alone with all the love for Matilda's spunk. Also, I did feel that Agnes was trying a bit more to engage with the girls - at least just a bit. @Ruthiella I was going to comment about the same thing. Agnes' interest seemed piqued during that part of the conversation. 12mo
willaful I had instant “hero alert!“ as soon as he was mentioned. But of course this is not a modern romance so anything could happen!

Love your pic for today. 😂

Clare-Dragonfly Agnes‘ blandness reminds me of the beginning of Villette—I hope that doesn‘t mean she‘s going to end up with someone awful like M. Paul. I agree with everyone else about Matilda! And I was thinking the same thing @Ruthiella – bring on Weston the curate! 😆 12mo

I hope to finish Under a White Sky #SheSaid and now that I have a physical copy of Agnes Grey to catch up a lot bit #PemberLittens

I‘m just about to start The Bandit Queens. After that I hope to get to The Red Tree, Saga vol 10 and get a good start on Children of Paradise.

I hope to have more luck with these longlisted books from the Women‘s Prize.

Magpiegem I just came on Litsy to add Bandit Queens to my TBR and your post was the first thing that popped up in front of me! 😂 12mo
Cinfhen I REALLY liked both Bandit & children from the longlist - hope they work for you!!! 12mo
