Chap 6 Quote/Footnote:
"...when you have finished Udolpho, we will read the Italian together; and I have made out a list of ten or twelve more of the same kind for you.” “Have you, indeed! How glad I am!—What are they all?” “I will read you their names directly [...] Castle of Wolfenbach, Clermont, Mysterious Warnings, Necromancer of the Black Forest, Midnight Bell, Orphan of the Rhine, and Horrid Mysteries."

sprainedbrain This is why pemberlittens did a buddy read of Udolpho after we read Northanger last time. 😃 8h

She never could learn or understand any thing before she was taught; and sometimes not even then, for she was often inattentive, and occasionally stupid. My Kindle copy of Northanger Abbey. This is a reread for me and I decided to try an annotated edition, so I'd get more out of it. Also bought an audiobook a while back but didn't realize it was abridged. It's entertaining so I'll probably listen to it anyway. @sprainedbrain #pemberlittens #gothic

sprainedbrain I‘d love it if you‘d post when you find interesting stuff in the annotations! I‘m reading my Chiltern edition so no annotations for me. 6d
Ann_Reads @sprainedbrain Sure, thing! I will post some when I have time. I should be able to take some screenshots. Annotations are interesting but they can also interrupt the flow of the story. I'm actually glad I read an unannotated version the first time. 6d

Years read for the #192025 challenge in September:
1932, 1970, 1981, 2000, 2009, 2018, 2020

I gave The Night Diary 4.5 stars and was pleasantly surprised by The File on H. I enjoyed the remainder, with a few “soft picks“ in the mix.

If my math is correct, I've read 25 books in total for the challenge so far.

@LibraryBelle

This is my #scarathlon2022 and #bookspinbingo board for October. I have it color coded for novels (black), picture books (orange), and short stories (yellow). (Numbering by row, left to right: Northanger Abbey #1, Still Life #5, Napolean #16, The Brown Hand #20.)
The bottom row is for #scarathlon picture books/novels borrowed through HOOPLA digital, as I'm limited to 5 books per month.

#sundayfunday @ozma.of.oz
If you could live in any house in a work of literature, where would it be?

Rivendell, the House of Elrond, was the first place that came to mind. I listened to the LOTR trilogy again during 2021-2022, so maybe that influenced my choice.

I noticed @PathfinderNicole chose a hobbit hole. In reality, that would probably be more to my liking. 🙂

Although this is a soft-pick for me, overall I enjoyed the story. Perhaps pacing for Esme's character was too slow or the author was too ambitious trying to tackle multiple social issues. I'm not certain. Otherwise, I did like the audio narration.

Happy 1st day of Autumn Equinox! 🍁 🍂
September 22, the official start date of #Autumnbingo2022 @Ann_Reads is here.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's posts and updates.

Helpful Hint: The word #candle is mentioned 62 times in my Kindle version of Jane Eyre. #Pemberlittens buddy read of Jane Eyre goes into October, so I'll accept it for this challenge.

(Please see a note about using #Autumnbingo2002 for #Scarathlon points below.)
⬇️⬇️

Ann_Reads If you are using the bingo card to help accrue points for #Scarathlon:
It might be helpful to delay tackling #Autumnbingo until October 1st, so your reading/books will count toward the #Scarathlon challenge. 💀

Ann_Reads @Karisimo Sorry about that. There aren't any specific rules for posting updates. I was trying to keep this a low-stress challenge. Ann_Reads Rules for #Autumnbingo2022
Start Date: September 22, 2022
End Date: December 21, 2022

Categories are open to interpretation. Try for a B-I-N-G-O or fill in the whole board. Books should be at least 100 pages, with the exception of the 'illustrated' category which can be under 100 pages.

There aren't specific rules for posting updates. When you finish a square -or- get a bingo is fine. Please tag @Ann_Reads with your progress & have fun.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'll definitely be doing this one during October for #Scarathlon !!! 2w
Ann_Reads @TheAromaofBooks Awesome! Glad you are joining in. Although this is an independent challenge, getting a bingo should definitely help you get some #scarathlon points. I think the books for scarathlon need to be read between October 1st and October 31st, so if your goal is to get points for that, it might be helpful to wait until October 1st to start tackling the #Autumnbingo2022 board. TheAromaofBooks Just double-checking - one prompt per book, correct? (i.e. I can't use one book to check off both Dark & Stormy AND Set in Autumn) 1w
Ann_Reads @TheAromaofBooks Good question. Yes, one prompt per book because the official #AutumnBingo2022 challenge is nearly three months long. Sorry, I should have added that to the rules. I'm adding a blurb here about a #PersonalChallenge I meant to begin in January 2022 but ended up setting aside. After some consideration, I decided to try again.
The #GlobalReading202223 (challenge) will last from September 2022 - December 2023. The challenge is divided into 12 broad continents/regions. I plan to read at least one book 'set' in each area. The goal is to read more diversely, while not stressing myself out with too many categories.

Ann_Reads The first region I'm crossing off my list is #SouthernEurope with The File on H., which is set in Albania. 🙂 (edited) 1mo

The File on H. | Ismail Kadare
post image
Pickpick

I had never heard of Ismail Kadare prior to being introduced to his name via a discussion on Goodreads with @Graywacke & @salderson107. A fictionalized story based on researchers (Parry & Lord) investigating whether Homer's works were original or based on oral tradition, sounded completely out of my comfort zone.
(continued)

Ann_Reads Originally written in Albanian, the English version was translated from the French.

Set in the 1930's there is something for almost everyone: Spies, intrigue, jealousy, romance, quirky humor, poetry, music and the more serious references to Albert Lord and Milman Parry's actual research.

I ended up really enjoying the book, both the oddly humorous introductory chapters and the more serious parts of the book.

(continued)
(edited) 1mo
Ann_Reads I'd like to thank @Graywacke for hosting a wonderfully informative buddy read which I really enjoyed participating in. (You really outdid yourself with all the links and extra information.) I'd also like to thank @Salderson107 for her comments, which I equally enjoyed reading and also learned a lot from.

salderson107 I loved reading with you too! I learned so much and got a whole new perspective on Homer! I also learned a lot about Albania in the 30s I had no idea about. 1mo

I'm restarting a personal reading challenge I set aside earlier this year, trying to read a book from various continents/regions, in no particular order. I'll set the challenge for September 2022 - December 2023 and see how I do with it. I'm hoping my Litsy friends will help keep me on track. 🙂

batsy Lovely review. Kadare sounds a bit like Orhan Pamuk in terms of the scope of his subjects. Yours and @Graywacke 's review have made me add this to my TBR. 1mo
Ann_Reads @batsy Thank you and I truly hope you like the story as much as we did. 🙂 1mo

Although I used to push myself to finish any book I started, I no longer hold myself to that. DNFing a book that isn't resonating with me, for whatever reason, is fine. Sometimes it's the writing and sometimes it's timing; something I'm not in the mood to read.

I enjoyed my reread, although some outdated parts are disturbing. Still, I appreciated the family bonding, pa playing the fiddle, seasonal preparations, etc. It makes one aware how much skill, time & effort was put into making sure there was adequate food during winter months. I think many of us modern day people wouldn't fare very well.

I plan to continue on with the series, maybe during my chilly weather, holiday mood reading.

Ann_Reads Just wanted to add, I still absolutely love the illustrations by Garth Williams. That, along with the cozy feeling of the story, brought me back to the moments I read this series as a child. (Like the feeling you get while wearing your most comfy PJ's and sipping some favorite hot tea, during a chilly Autumn morning.) 1mo

Described in great detail, Yong tackles the question of how different animals experience the world. The book is not about which species has 'the best' eyesight or sense of smell, nor is it a direct comparison with human senses. Instead, it is about how animals perceive their environment and have adapted their senses to help them survive. Yong backs up his information with scientific studies and a dose of humor.

Partially posting this to help remind myself what I'm supposed to be reading. 🙂📚🙃
I usually don't have this many books going at one time, so it will be challenging.

Ann_Reads I forgot my re-read of Remarkable Creatures on audio, this time around. 🎧 1mo

Mehso-so

This is a slow moving, character driven book. During the 1700s, a bereaved young teenager, Stefan Silbermann, is sent off to boarding school in Leipzig. There he comes under the instruction of the school's demanding cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach.

I was looking forward to reading this but didn't fully connect with this maudlin historical fiction story. There is a lot of moralizing and references to musical terms.

An interesting collection of essays about the writing process, mostly focused on Bradbury's personal experiences. For the most part, this isn't a how-to, guide to writing type of book though.

I read A Year in Provence quite a few years ago and found it to be humorous, though a bit pretentious. (If I read it today, I'm not sure what my reaction would be to the book.)

A nice compilation of nature poetry. Some of it is spiritual in tone but not overtly religious.

I read this biography a few years ago while PBS was airing the Masterpiece series about Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert. Although some of the details escape me now, I thought it was informative and well written. (Not dry and boring.)

#ChildrensClassicRead2022 @TheBookHippie

As with some of the other classic children's books I've been reading lately, there were issues with the writing mainly due to the socially acceptable intolerances that existed during the time period it was written in. Still, most of it is a sweet story about siblings and it has a happy ending. I tried to focus on that and just enjoy it.

TheBookHippie It is often with these older books, I do the same thing. It was a sweet overall story. 2mo
Cathythoughts I went to see the movie with my granddaughter recently, we really enjoyed it 👍🏻❤️ 1mo
