mcctrish Why does FD start off the court chapter with “so much is happening, I won‘t bore you with the details” and then chapter XII.6 have some random character, near death, recount the ENTIRE trajectory of Fyodor‘s life and interactions with his sons and Mitya‘s spending habits and thus bore us WITH WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW! This chapter tells us the whole story but leaves out the devils and the cockroaches. 13mo

Vansa Finally catching up.I thought this was an incredibly beautifully written chapter-captures an entire sweep of changing social mores, a thwarted romance, class prejudices in one short chapter. Something entire books don't do as well. I teared up at the end-I wish Matty's changing attitudes didn't have to come with such a cost to her. And still women soldier on. 2y

mcctrish I was feeling badly for Agnes, would the mom even let her talk or explain herself?! But so happy she has the dog for companionship ( Matilda better let her keep it 😡) but stumbling upon the whole Mr Hatfield/Rosalie drama is just bonkers! He is an AWFUL man! If R thinks he‘s going to take a brush off well, saddle up!!! I almost felt sorry for R with her ramble about Sir Thomas Ashby and what all the mothers say and what he does and doesn‘t do. 2y

dabbe I'm very worried about the terrier. That's mostly all I could think of during this chapter. Rosalie reminds me of Bathsheba Everdene in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD ... only Bathsheba was the main character and not a snobby-nosed sidekick like Rosalie. Heck, she's not even a sidekick! #sheneedstobekickedintheass 2y

How freaking far gone is she that Weston can snatch a book out of her hand and she‘s all “oh, he‘s being brotherly”? 🙄 And she won‘t report the actual conversation with him, but she does report every obnoxious word of Rosalie‘s conversation with Hatfield. Plus, I get a slut-shamey vibe from her disapproval. Not that Rosalie doesn‘t deserve all the disapproval. 2y
