The Two Towers
The Two Towers: Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings | J.R.R. Tolkien
The second volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGS One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them Frodo and his Companions of the Ring have been beset by danger during their quest to prevent the Ruling Ring from falling into the hands of the Dark Lord by destroying it in the Cracks of Doom. They have lost the wizard, Gandalf, in a battle in the Mines of Moria. And Boromir, seduced by the power of the Ring, tried to seize it by force. While Frodo and Sam made their escape, the rest of the company was attacked by Orcs. Now they continue the journey alone down the great River Anduinalone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. Among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century. The book presents us with the richest profusion of new lands and creatures, from the beauty of Lothlrien to the horror of Mordor. Sunday Telegraph

Be the Sam to your Frodo!!

quote
Books_n_Whatnot

“Don‘t trust your head, Samwise, it is not the best part of you.”

quote
Books_n_Whatnot

“He looked on the bright point of the sword. He thought of the places behind where there was a black brink and an empty fall into nothingness. There was no escape that way. That was to do nothing, not even to grieve.”

quote

post image

“Still, I wonder if we shall ever be put into words, you know, told by the fireside, or read out of a great big book with red and black letters, years and years afterwards. And people will say: ‘Let‘s hear about Frodo and the Ring!‘”

quote

Same here, Sam, same here.

quote
Books_n_Whatnot

“But perhaps you could call her perilous, because she‘s so strong in herself. You, you could a a dash yourself to pieces on her, like a ship on a rock; or drownd yourself, like a hobbit in a river. But neither rock nor river would be to blame.”
-Sam, on Lady Galadriel

“confusing kindness and blindness”

Movie Frodo always kinda annoyed me, but the book is providing some insight that makes him much more endearing. Frodo is very kind, but he isn‘t soft.

Conclusive evidence that Samwise Gamgee is the strongest, most selfless supportive character ever written

quote
Books_n_Whatnot

“For a moment it appeared to Sam that his master had grown and Gollum had shrunk: a tall stern shadow, a mighty lord who hid his brightness in grey cloud, and at his feet a little whining dog. Yet the two were in some way akin and not alien: they could reach one another‘s minds.”

I don‘t know if I‘ll ever fully understand Frodo and Gollum‘s relationship, but I think that‘s what makes Tolkien a great writer. Sometimes things don‘t make sense.

“But anyway, my dear hobbit, don‘t put a lump of rock under my elbow again!”

I can‘t decide if this part makes me feel more affection for Pippin or Gandalf. It does provide a bit of contrast between how Gandalf the Grey and Gandalf the White deal with Pippin‘s mischief.

[The Voice of Saruman]
“Mostly they remembered only that it was a delight to hear the voice speaking, all that it said seemed wise and reasonable, and desire awoke in them by swift agreement to seem wise themselves.”

“Then Gandalf laughed. The fantasy vanished like a puff of smoke.”

1. I loved this scene where most of the Company is back together and Gimli finally got the small comfort of a pipe.
2. So Legolas isn‘t a smoker huh?

“‘You move me, Gimli,‘ said Legolas. ‘I have never heard you speak like this before... Come! Let us make this bargain- if we both return safe out of the perils that await us, we will journey for a while together. You shall visit Fangorn with me, and then I will come with you to see Helm‘s Deep.‘
‘...I will endure Fangorn, if I have your promise to come back to the caves and share their wonder with me.‘”

Advice from Lady Galadriel to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli

quote
Books_n_Whatnot

“Those were the broad days! Time was when I could walk and sing all day and hear no more than the echo of my own voice in the hollow hills. The woods were like the woods of Lothlórien, only thicker, stronger, younger. And the smell of the air! I used to spend a week just breathing.”
-Fangorn

quote
Books_n_Whatnot

“Merry stood up, looking pale but grim and defiant, and very much alive. The hash in his forehead gave him no more trouble, but he bore a brown scar to the end of his days. ‘Hullo, Pippin!‘ he said. ‘So you‘ve come on this little expedition, too? Where do we get bed and breakfast?‘”

Book IV: Elven rope is magical. Gollum & Sam crave fish and a pint, respectively. Frodo is tired of this shit. Sam cooks. Frodo talks to Faramir about Boromir. Sam sees an oliphaunt. Frodo tricks Gollum to save him, but he sticks around. A stinky death cave has a big ass spidey, and an Elven vial is magical. Gollum finally gets around to betrayal. Sam works through the 7 stages of grief. The book ends where it begins: the orcs have got a hobbit.

One of my favorites, especially the character of Theoden. Definitely more action-packed and fast-paced than Fellowship, which may make it more enjoyable to some readers.

2 audiobooks came in.. I‘m torn on which to read... I‘ve read Two Towers & seen the movie, but this BBC production is wonderful & I‘m “re-reading” the series this way... but An American marriage I started a whiiiile ago (physical book for #reallifebookgroup) & feel like it‘s high time to finish.... thoughts?

Also — rec‘d my #AllHallowsReadSwap pkg yesterday. thank you @TheSpineView — I already feel spoiled!! Can‘t wait til next week! 👏🏽👏🏽🎃♥️

BookwormAHN I'd finish An American Marriage first then sit back and enjoy The Two Towers 👻 1mo

UwannaPublishme Tough choice. You may have to flip a coin. 😁 1mo
Avanders @BookwormAHN great suggestion! I was all for it, but then when I was in the car, I realized I hadn‘t prepped the audio for An American Marriage (since I‘d already read a portion), so it ended up being Two Towers... since I was in the car for >2.5 hrs today, I made some good progress! 😄 @UwannaPublishme I got “lucky” and didn‘t have to 😁 1mo

The completion of this book makes 24 books completed for 2019. 🙌🏽 In past years, I would set my goal to 52 books but I found myself stressing when I got behind and wouldn‘t let myself read longer/denser books. So now, as long as I read two books per month, I‘m happy with myself. Most of the time I read more than that tho. #goodreads

A fun day at the Cincinnati Comic Expo! There are a bunch of great comic artists and writers. We got these giant DC Comic totes that are almost the same size as @cobwebmoth ! We went to a Lord of the Rings panel with Bernard Hill. He was delightfully funny! Many good stories about filming the movies, playing Theoden, and never reading the book all the way through. 😀

Chrissyreadit ❤️❤️❤️❤️I love Comic Cons and Expos- was this a good one? 2mo

“Some of the trees they just cut down and leave to rot...most are hewn up and carried off to feed the fires of Orthanc. There is always a smoke rising from Isengard these days. Curse him, root and branch! Many of those trees were my friends, creatures I had known from nut and #acorn; many had voices of their own that are lost for ever now. And there are wastes of stump and bramble where once there were singing groves...It must stop!” #QuotsySept19

A fantastic read! Anyone who is vaguely interested in fantasy themes or just wants to get up to date with the Tolkien-verse has to keep this trilogy in their reading lists.
