First Blood | David Morrell
post image

I know this isn‘t a book, but I went to see ‘Last Blood‘ last night. I‘ve always been a fan of Rambo for that wandering hero, troubled but trying his best to do some good in spite of his failings...

BUT THIS FILM WAS AWFUL!!!!!!!

Such a dismal way to end this franchise. I‘m genuinely sorry I watched it.

LibrarianRyan The first three are a book, as @Trashcanman has proved to me over and over. Have you read the books. I read book one about 2 months ago. The author wrote book 1, then the movie came out, and her wrote books 2 and 3 from the scripts for movies 2 and three. I don't plan on reading those.

And apparently the author hated this movie as well.
(edited) 2w
Martyn_J_Pass @LibrarianRyan Yeah I was a huge fan of book 1 and I liked the films for different reasons. Rambo 4 was a satisfying end to the franchise I thought, Rambo‘s arc was complete and it was all wrapped up nicely. Then this abomination came along and I‘m now trying to forget it lol. 2w
LibrarianRyan I have not seen the movies since I was a kid. I keep telling myself to go back and watch them with an adult perspective, I just haven't done it yet. But I am planing on it. I'll skip the last one. 2w
Martyn_J_Pass @LibrarianRyan Defo watch all 4 movies. They each offer something to the tale but I agree, stop at number 4 and don‘t entertain 5. I didn‘t mind the violence, it was just the terrible storyline and the heavy-handed politics crowbarred in. It definitely wasn‘t in keeping with the character and, like I said before, his arc was completed in the previous movie and didn‘t need anything more. 2w

Brilliant. Short and straight to the point. I was grateful to hear that I‘m moving in the right direction when it comes to both my writing of fiction and my life. It made me a little sad to realise that (being a metal worker) I don‘t get to interact much with women in the trade simply because there aren‘t many female metalworkers in the UK. Let‘s hope for change!

Wow! The audio book is narrated by Elisabeth Moss herself and does it pack a punch! I‘m normally listening to books (at work) rather than reading pages and this is a new experience - it sounds more like the narrator is speaking directly to you rather than just reading off a page. 3 hours in and I have sooooooo many questions lol

I was really enjoying the series to begin with, having started at the chronological beginning. But by the time I got to the end of this one, the authors agenda and use of age-old tropes began to grate on me. In the world of the Witcher, all men are sex-mad idiots and all women are wise, calculating robots who berate anyone they come across. I was hoping for more but sadly I was disappointed. Might take a break before listening to the next book.

Geralt is at his best when he‘s explaining his life as a Witcher and why he doesn‘t get involved in the war that surrounds him. Although I do find the lack of subtlety in how the author handles his themes, there are some gems in there - like the quote above.

Soooooooo hyped for the upcoming Netflix series of ‘The Witcher‘. I‘m working through the books as we speak and although I find the themes heavy handed, they‘re great sword and sorcery tales.

Gezemice Ooooh, I would love to see that, too. The books are excellent. And the game is awesome. And Geralt... well. Easy on the eyes. 1mo
Martyn_J_Pass @Gezemice I‘ve not played the game but I might check it out now. And yeah, even I can appreciate Mr Cavill lol 1mo
Gezemice @Martyn_J_Pass I was actually referring to the game. 😍 It is very good. Great dialogue and game play, too. And the graphics are stunning. 1mo

Martyn_J_Pass @Gezemice Sorry, my heart belongs to Lydia from Skyrim 🥰🥰🥰 1mo
Gezemice @Martyn_J_Pass Lol, I playd that, too. Many lost nights. The Witcher is similar but better in my opinion, as in, way better story and dialogue. You can only play as Geralt, though. And sometimes as Ciri. 1mo
Martyn_J_Pass @Gezemice I‘m going to have to get a copy for my PS. Does it differ a lot from the stories? 1mo
Gezemice @Martyn_J_Pass It is based on the stories - same characters and settings, but it has a different storyline. There are multiple outcomes depending on the choices you make. 1mo

A short play but one that really hits the mark. Ibsen makes some brilliant points on men and women in marriage (way back in 1879) and the need for men to stop judging women by masculine standards. A must read for anyone exploring feminism and masculinity.

I‘ve just preordered this - I‘m a big fan of del Toro and was deeply disappointed when he left the production of The Hobbit movie. Pan‘s Labyrinth was a film that totally freaked me out (you know which scene I‘m talking about) but I felt that a novel would do it far more justice. Soooo excited to read this with Cornelia Funke on the team too!!!!

Susanita My favorite movie that I‘ll never watch again. It took the entire credits for me to compose myself. 4mo

I can‘t really say much in 400 characters. A fantastic look at the topic and VERY challenging to me, as a white, cisgender het man, and part of what the author believes is the main cause of misogyny in the west. The most important thing here is that the focus is clearly (and rightly) on the victims. I‘d have liked to have come away with something to act on or maybe do differently but apart from that, it was brilliant!

This was a totally comprehensive piece on the history and treatment of depression. It was beautifully poignant in places and very eye opening to the signs, symptoms and causes of the illness. Although it gave me plenty to think about, given my own mental health issues, I did feel that the harsh reality of the overall difficulties in effectively treating depression were a little disheartening. Still, a fantastic read.

So I started this at work today, having finished my latest audio feast. In the spirit of genuine desire to learn more and understand the authors position, how does someone even begin to wrestle with misogyny when the foundation is immediately undermined by an affirmation of human genders being non-binary? Surely that would change the very definition of the problem from being Male oppression of women to something far more specific? Help please!

BarbaraTheBibliophage I hope you‘ll keep at it. To my mind, she does explain how these two concepts (misogyny and non-binary) aren‘t mutually exclusive. But her focus really is on the way patriarchy and sexism create a societal atmosphere of misogyny. That affects pretty much anyone who isn‘t male, hetero and cis gendered. 4mo
Martyn_J_Pass @BarbaraTheBibliophage Oh I‘ll definitely be sticking with it, i love the style and content too much to abandon it! I just needed some clarification and you‘re absolutely right, it came in the next chapter. To understand misogyny as something that isn‘t necessarily male dominated but calls us to shift the focus rightfully onto the victims - namely women as a whole, is an important distinction to make. 4mo

CALLING ALL LITTENS!!!!

My dear friend and fellow Indie author, Suzy, has just finished her debut novel and was looking for a couple of beta readers to help her out. Her novel, Somebody To You, is a sassy British romance tale and although I‘m biased I think it‘s great. Would anyone be willing to read it in its raw form and give her some honest feedback?

Smrloomis Hmm, I‘d volunteer but I don‘t read #romance so I‘d probably not be very helpful. But there are lots of people I follow who post about romance so hopefully you‘ll get some volunteers. Besides being British is there anything else to categorize it? Like M/M or historical or something? Just thinking off the top of my head 😂 5mo

The Aubrey and Maturin series of books have become comfort-reading/listening to me at the hardest of times. The relationship between these two unlikely friends is amazing and though I love the fan art out there (like this above) it kind of saddens me that people interpret the close friendship of two men as automatically being homosexual in nature. Regardless, these books are fantastic!

Andrew65 Not my favourite one. 5mo
Martyn_J_Pass @Andrew65 I gave up on the series tbh. I couldn‘t work out why they got so much praise when they felt very cliched and I normally don‘t mind a bit of over the top action. I would have liked to enjoy them more than I did. 5mo
Andrew65 My thoughts are along the same lines. I enjoyed the first few but although I own a number of others quite a while since I read one. Feel there are other better writers out there but some seem to ride the wave of hype (feel same for J k Rowling - there are better children‘s authors out there). With Jack Reacher not helped when they cast Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher!!!! 5mo
See All 8 Comments
Martyn_J_Pass @Andrew65 I did laugh my ass off at the choice of Tom Cruise! I have a long list of ‘hyped‘ authors that I just can‘t see the appeal of and so many others who never get a look in. Ah well, guess that‘s just the way the industry works... 5mo
Andrew65 @Martyn_J_Pass Tom Cruise decision left me exasperated! Strange how the hype train works. I‘ve found a lot of independently published authors and little know authors whose books I prefer to read. 5mo
