What a cliffhanger before we start The Return of the King! Tolkien does such an amazing job of making me feel these emotions right alongside Sam. I‘m kind of glad I got so behind so that now I don‘t have to wait long to continue.

TheAromaofBooks I had forgotten how this ending leaves you hanging!!! I am SO excited about reading the conclusion!! 5mo
BethM I had also forgotten there was a cliffhanger! 5mo

curiouserandcurioser @Daisey when do we start Return of theKing, please? 5mo
BarbaraJean Yes, when is the start date for ROTK? I was thinking it was this week (10/16), but maybe this is the catch-up week? I‘ve lost track because I keep falling behind! 5mo
Daisey @curiouserandcurioser @BarbaraJean I kind of lost track as well when I got behind. The most recent schedule says catch up through October 20, and @jazzfeathers is working to post a new schedule very soon. 5mo
BarbaraJean @Daisey Thank you! It‘s nice to know I‘m not behind after all! 5mo
curiouserandcurioser @Daisey Thank you:) im so excited for Return of the King!! 5mo
JazzFeathers You know? I once read the article of someone saying that Tolkien's structure for LotR is a failure, because of the long lapses between books and the shifting of focus. I actually think this is a strength because we go from one good story to another. 5mo
Daisey @JazzFeathers I really think it kind of depends on the person and how they get caught up on the story. There are definitely books with shifting perspective like this where I‘ve just jumped ahead to read a specific storyline and there have been times I‘ve been tempted with this one, but usually I can be patient with Tolkien‘s plan. So, I see the point, although I think his writing is strong enough to make it work. 5mo

I‘ve been struggling to find actual reading time lately, although it should be a bit better now that I‘ve finished Clarissa. I read a couple chapters last night and this morning, and I just have the final chapter of The Two Towers left. I always love this discussion between Frodo & Sam about the people in stories that really happened. Nobody goes out planning to be the hero of a story, but the ones that don‘t give up do become those heroes!

wisherwishinguponastar This is one of my absolute favorite parts!!!!! 5mo

Daisey @wisherwishinguponastar It is such an amazing discussion in the midst of everything, and again delivers such a real message for any reader. 5mo
BethM I loved these parts too! So introspective. Also I alternated between audio, ebook, and physical- it was the only way I kept up. 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Always loved this section. 5mo
JazzFeathers @wisherwishinguponastar @Daisey @BethM @Riveted_Reader_Melissa This is truly an awesome passage. A piece of metastory that gives us insight into the mind of the author and at the same time speaks directly to as as readers. Also, l think it shows what a modern writer Tolkien actually is in spite of his subject matter! 5mo

Quote from chapter 12 “Inside Information”
One of the many things I love about Tolkien‘s writing is his emphasis on the strength and determination of simple characters that aren‘t seen as heroic by the wider world, or at least not until after their adventures. Bilbo demonstrates so much courage when going to find Smaug all alone, and it‘s acknowledged clearly in the story.

Vansa This is so true. A theme running through Lord of the rings as well- the beating heart of the stories is the incredible courage shown by ordinary people thrown into circumstances completely out of the normal 8mo

Roary47 Love this! That is sooo true. 💛 8mo
Daisey @Vansa Absolutely! This theme is such an important part of his work. 8mo
Suet624 💕💕💕😳💕💕💕 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I love also how the emphasis here is on this “small“ moment alone - not in the heat of battle, but a time where he had to make his own personal decision as to what he was going to do and what kind of person he was going to be. So fantastic! 8mo
BethM Both your point and @TheAromaofBooks are really good. I didn‘t think of it that way. 8mo
JazzFeathers That's one of my favourite quotes in the book, and in Tolkien's work in general 🤩 8mo
JazzFeathers @TheAromaofBooks True, eh? Personal choices are always extremely important in all of Tolkien's stories 8mo
BarbaraJean I love this moment so much. @Vansa @TheAromaofBooks I love how you both put it! It's so telling of Bilbo's character that it's THIS moment that determines the path he will take. Not a moment where anyone else is expecting anything of him or pressuring him to act in a certain way, but a moment where he draws on his own courage to move forward. 8mo

Yesterday evening I caught up on chapters 2 and 3. When I read now, I appreciate these little hints at the Legendarium so much more. I also like getting to see the joyful, carefree side of the elves.

Daisey Hoping I‘ve got everyone tagged. Headed to work now, but I hope to have time to read posts and update the list if needed later today. 8mo
Vansa Exactly! It's lovely when you see those, and realise Tolkien had the vague hints of a larger epic while completing this 8mo
JazzFeathers The way the Legendarium filters in in the Hobbit always amazes and delights me. It shows how much Tolkien loved and was involved with his Middle-earth. 8mo
Daisey @Vansa @JazzFeathers Yes, this was supposed to be a story separate from that world, but it just makes itself a part. I had to get out my copy of History of The Hobbit this evening to look at some notes as well. 8mo

From Letter 213
I think we often over analyze author‘s lives and writing to find more than the author intended, so I find this comment about no person truly knowing the relationship between writer and writing very appropriate.

jimfields3 As someone who loves context this passage is a challenge. But it also makes a lot of sense. Thanks for posting! 2y
Daisey @jimfields3 I completely understand about context. To add a bit, this is from a letter in response to a request for more information about his personal life. He discussed his dislike of some of these requests, how he felt some “insignificant” details were more important to his writing than what was often requested, and also went on to give some personal details he felt relevant. 2y
JazzFeathers I've always found it hard to accept Tolkien position in this, though l can also see his position. I think that an author's life is undetatchable from their life, because everything an author puts in their stories come from their life experience. But l can also see what Tolkien means by 'insignificant details'. It's a complex matter, l suppose. 2y
