A Year of Marvellous Ways
A Year of Marvellous Ways | Sarah Winman
*A Richard & Judy Bookclub Pick Spring 2016* A YEAR OF MARVELLOUS WAYS is the unforgettable and completely captivating new novel from Sarah Winman, author of the international bestseller WHEN GOD WAS A RABBIT. Marvellous Ways is eighty-nine years old and has lived alone in a remote Cornish creek for nearly all her life. Lately she's taken to spending her days sitting on a mooring stone by the river with a telescope. She's waiting for something - she's not sure what, but she'll know it when she sees it. Drake is a young soldier left reeling by the Second World War. When his promise to fulfil a dying man's last wish sees him wash up in Marvellous' creek, broken in body and spirit, the old woman comes to his aid. A Year of Marvellous Ways is a glorious, life-affirming story about the magic in everyday life and the pull of the sea, the healing powers of storytelling and sloe gin, love and death and how we carry on when grief comes snapping at our heels.

#bfcr3 week 2 update @wanderinglynn @Chrissyreadit . I was expecting injections to fall behind this week as we hosted a party Sunday night & the last guest didn't leave until 11:45 - too late for the injections.

4 1/2 ⭐ for this book - @Cathythoughts I enjoyed this book & definitely keen to read more by this author (luckiky I've got some downloaded on my Kindle!)

@jhod it will be on it's way later this week, along with a birthday present!

Megabooks Great job this week!! 1w

Chrissyreadit Yay!!! Awesome job!!! 1w
Chrissyreadit Where are you going on vacation? 1w
jenniferw88 @Chrissyreadit kefalonia (Greek island). Thinking about it, can probably still do 12 books as there's not much there to do, & all i do is sit inside and read! 🤣🤣🤣 1w
Chrissyreadit @jenniferw88 why inside? Is it not nice there? How amazing to be able to travel to cool places! 6d
jenniferw88 @Chrissyreadit it's lovely, but I don't like the sun and one of my tablets makes me much hotter than everyone else, so I don't sunbathe much. 6d
Chrissyreadit @jenniferw88 I understand! We tell people I‘m allergic to the sun because I burn after a few minutes no matter the SPF so I always prefer woods and mountains. 6d

Sarah Winman speaks of the haunting & evocative feel of the tidal creeks in Cornwall / where the book is mostly set. ( never been .. but want to go now ) The value of storytelling.. the old people in her life. She says : the more I talked to old men who had been in the war , I realized , the more fantastical the stories - the more pain they were hiding ... Loved this one. #LMPBC

TrishB This all comes through in this book ❤️ 1mo

Cathythoughts @TrishB makes total sense to me. I don‘t know how she does it ... she holds an edge I think .. when I think of that young Soldier Drake , coming back from the horrors of war - coming home to no one , no family , it‘s beyond what I can even imagine ( soppy doesn‘t even come into it .., 1mo

Mehso-so

This was cute, but I couldn‘t really connect to the characters. It felt like Winman was more focused on writing beautiful and poetic sentences, than focused on writing the story. It felt a bit messy to me, and while I loved the themes of grief and story telling, it just wasn‘t enough to make me fall in love with the story.

TrishB Sorry you didn‘t enjoy so much. I loved Marvellous 💕 9mo
BarbaraBB Too bad it was disappointing. I have this one waiting for me but don‘t really dare starting it because I am afraid of a similar experience (edited) 9mo
Kalalalatja @TrishB @BarbaraBB I really liked Marvellous as a character, it was all the others that felt a bit weird for me, especially some of the later characters that felt like they were just thrown in without much reason. But I‘m crossing my fingers I‘ll feel differently about When God Was a Rabbit 🤞 I‘m in a bit of a slump-ish mood, so that might have an impact on my feelings as well 9mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB I loved When God too....sometimes reading at the right time and mood is important too. 9mo

#maybookflowers Today's prompt made me think of #peace-time and the challenges faced by returning soldiers, and it gave me another excuse to recommend the lovely Sarah Winman! Set on the Cornwall coast, post-WW2. Marvellous is 90 yrs young, and living an isolated life. Francis Drake, is a fragile and damaged young soldier, returning from France. Their lives cross paths and they begin a friendship, healing as they care for each other. So lovely 💕

#day20 #seasonsreadings2016 #titlesstartingwithxyz This lovely post-war set novel is as heart-warming as it is heart-wrenching. Poetic writing with a touch of the magical, set on the rugged Cornwall coast. Marvelous is 90 years young and quirky as hell. Francis, a fragile young soldier, is returning from France after the war. Their lives cross paths and their friendship heals wounds as they care for each other. A great pick for 'Y'' for #Litsyatoz

Marvellous is 89 years old and the daughter of a mermaid. Drake, meanwhile, is a soldier who returns to England from fighting in France. The pair strike up an unlikely, but inevitable, friendship. This novel has a dreamlike quality to it but once you get used to its magical realism it's captivating.
