A vivid read that really takes you to Vietnam and inside the characters minds. It‘s written in small, to the point sentences which when done right (like this) I love. O‘Brien plays with memory & fiction & what‘s real & what isn‘t but it worked so perfectly in putting across the point that you just can‘t know what war is truly like etc. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #soldiersstory #booked2019

Cinfhen This was such a powerful book. I read it years ago and haven‘t forgotten it 3d
merelybookish Great review! Ditto @cinfhen ☝️ The title story in particular has stayed with me. 3d
Liz_M This is one of my all-time favorite books. It was also my first introduction to meta-fiction. 3d

BookNAround To prove just how old I am, O‘Brien was the writer in residence at my college right after this came out so I got to be in a writing fiction class that he visited for a week or so. 3d

The Water Dancer: A Novel | Ta-Nehisi Coates

My #weeklyforecast this week is dedicated to #booked2019 📚 I‘ve made some progress on each of these reads this weekend:

Ohio #bookaboutaddiction
William, an Englishman #soldiersstory
The Water Dancer #PoCMCParanormal (which I am LOVING by the way, can't put it down!)

Thanks to our hosts for the bookish inspiration!! @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

EmilyM I just finished Water Dancer this afternoon.....loved it! I think I am going to now read Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad to follow it up. 4d
4thhouseontheleft I really want to read The Water Dancer! I‘m on hold for it at the library. 4d
Cathythoughts I nearly got the Water Dancer the other day 🤔... maybe I‘ll go back & get it 👍🏻❤️ 4d

emilyhaldi @EmilyM its reminding me so much of Underground Railroad!! I'm already loving it as much. Perhaps thats why I keep thinking you would love it, Cindy! @Cinfhen (edited) 3d
BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved Water Dancer. So glad Coates stretched into the world of fiction without losing his social justice focus. 3d
Reviewsbylola Oh really?! I didn‘t even consider reading the Coates because paranormal. 😛 How is Ohio? 16h

Beware of Pity | Stefan Zweig, Trevor Blewitt

A young Austrian officer befriends a local millionaire and his family, but in particular the man's crippled daughter, Edith, for whom he feels sorry. The consequences are terrible.
But there is so much more to the story. As always, Zweigs‘ plot unfolds through things left unsaid, situations misread.
The only possible downside to this book is that it would be even more powerful if he‘d written it as a novella.

This won‘t be upsetting AT ALL. Nonfiction can be hard for me to make time for when I‘m reading after work (I find it requires a level of mental engagement I can‘t always give) so audiobook version at work it is! Ready to rage at my desk this week. #nonfictionnovember #booked2019 #soldiersstory

Cinfhen I‘ve seen the film and was really consumed 2w

Boyne, oh Boyne, did it again. I may have shed a tear or two. So much emotion in a simple, well crafted story. Anger, revenge, guilt, shame. Against the backdrop of the carnage of war, it asks the questions about courage and love. It will leave you thinking about the madness of it all (the war, the inhumanity). Tragic and 💔. Another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️from Boyne.

Thanks @cathythoughts for bringing this book to my attention for #SoldiersStory #Booked2019

This is listed as a romance, but I feel like it‘s much more than that. This book is much more emotional than I usually read. It‘s a #soldiersstory, plus has a character that has muscular dystrophy and one that is being abused. I liked the way the story began before the solider went to war, spent a little time with him during the war and then mostly focused on the aftermath and dealing with tragedy. #booked2019

4thhouseontheleft Good pick for this prompt! 3mo

Such a vivid story - I felt I was sitting with the characters. Meditations on : dying without reconciliation , immunity to violence, love , youth & old age ... war ... 5⭐️ Soldiers Story

Mehso-so

A bit #MoreMehThanYeah. While I did like the setting and premise of the book, it was just a bit too boring to really wow me. The characters felt flat, and some parts moved way too quickly, while others were way too slow.

I‘m counting this as my #SoldiersStory for #Booked2019, since the MC is serving out his compulsory military service for most of the book.

#BookerPrize2019

TrishB I‘m probably going to wait for an offer on this one. Curious but can definitely wait! 3mo
Cathythoughts I was going to let it go ... but #SoldiersStory is a book I need to tick 🤔 (edited) 3mo

Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts it is relatively short, if that helps 🤷‍♀️ @TrishB @Cinfhen definitely a #borrownotbuy or a cheap kindle deal. It wasn‘t bad, but it wasn‘t great either 3mo
TrishB @Cathythoughts I really recommend this one for soldiers story 3mo
Cathythoughts @TrishB thanks ! I just took a screenshot of your suggestion- I‘ve never read John Boyne.. so maybe it‘s time to give him a go 👍🏻 3mo
