Charlotte Gray | Sebastian Faulks
post image

Charlotte Gray‘s lover is #lostinFrance during the occupation. Can she take advantage of being parachuted into a small French village, to take part in undercover work, to trace him?

I remember loving both the book and the film back along, but very little else about them!

#wanderingjune

Cathythoughts I have this one ... must read 👍🏻 21h

Are any UK-based folks interested in joining @jhod @jenniferw88 and me, nabbing the last spot in this round of Litsy MarkUp Postal BookClub?

Read a book, mark it up with your thoughts, post it on. Each round lasts 4 books (1 book a month) so not a major long term commitment. It‘s fun! And you‘re bound to read something you wouldn‘t have otherwise...

Sign up on @suvata ‘s page (scroll back a few posts!)

Cathythoughts I think I just signed up. I hope the spot is still left 🤞🏻 1d

Sunday morning reading (thanks @Oryx )

I‘m ? already. So many concerns, and she just keeps bulldozering through, apparently through sheer force of personality.

I think there‘s an ‘unlikeable person‘ category in #nonfiction2019 - chances are I‘ll use this book for the prompt. Not sure which person I‘ll be referring to though... So far, Elizabeth appears determined, naïve, just plain wrong and possibly delusional- but Fuisz... WHAT??

squirrelbrain Sounds great - I‘ve read a lot in the press about this... stacked! 2d
Cathythoughts I think it sounds great too ! Stacking 2d
Hooked_on_books I loved this book. I really want to see someone do a novelization of the story and try to get in her head. Did she know she was scamming everyone, or did she delude herself as well? I just don‘t know. 2d
See All 13 Comments
Oryx It's incredible, isn't it? So many moments of, "But how? Why? Wtf???". So much arrogance too to think she could just make a scientific idea work, without even bothering to learn any science (as in finish her degree, nevermind a PhD). And then a Harvard prof tells her straight off, this can't work because x y z... she ignores her. 2d
HeatherBookNerd Totally fascinating story. Shows you just how far privilege and wealth can take you even when you‘re completely delusional. 2d
Bookwormjillk I just got this from the library. Can‘t wait to read it. 2d
RachelO @squirrelbrain @Cathythoughts 👍 Think it‘s going to be a great rant read! 2d
RachelO @Hooked_on_books Exactly! I‘m only at the beginning, and I don‘t feel like she‘s being malicious. Just out-of-her-depth and genuinely believing it‘ll work if you hit it hard enough, plus spectacularly unaware of any other human beings in the room. Although she did know how to charm/manipulate top bods, so maybe I‘m wrong on the lack of people skills... 2d
RachelO @Oryx I worked in Patents Information for a brief while (a job I LOVED!). We were told at the beginning we‘d be bound to see perpetual motion machines, and sure enough, day 1... IT CANNOT WORK! But me and my GCSE physics weren‘t there to give technical advice, and they fully believed it worked... They really just didn‘t hear it... 2d
RachelO @HeatherBookNerd It‘s just amazing. 2d
RachelO @Bookwormjillk Hope you find it interesting- it‘s a good one! 2d
Cathythoughts Unstacked , as I just got it on kindle 👍🏻👍🏻 😁 2d
RachelO @Cathythoughts 👍 Thanks for the reminder! I need to unstack All The Things 😁 2d

Tea.
Fragrant leaves, delicate buds.
Admired by poets, loved by monks.
Crushed with white jade, filtered through red gauze.
Cauldron brewed to the color of gold, served in cups aswirl in bubbles.
Inviting the moon at night for company, facing alone the twilight before the sunrise.
Feeling energized in past or present, praise fully rinsing away drunkenness.

Katherine | Anya Seton

Couldn‘t decide between two for #castleonthehill , so here they both are. And wildly different!

Seton‘s Katherine is epic historical fiction, set in the 14th century, a love story between Katherine Swynford & John of Gaunt. I‘m remembering castles!

The Time of the Goats is set in 1940s Skopje, Yugoslavia now North Macedonia, where the Kale (Fortress) is a presence across the town. And ends up as a home for a fair number of goats.

This morning‘s revelation is that I need to read more Chinese fiction! Looking forward to seeing what people recommend.

In the meantime, I enjoyed this story of Li-yan, a girl from the Akha hill tribe, her daughter, and tea, set in China and America. Focused on the women in her family, it‘s quite research-heavy- I felt the author wanted to tell us Everything she‘s learned- but still a fascinating read!

I remember loving these books about a big, chaotic 1930s working-class family. Of course, I only read #theEnd 2 books in the series - never did track down the first one.

#MayMovieMagic

Cinfhen Maybe @CarolynM or @TrishB are familiar 3w

Pickpick

How do you review this?

I want to go straight back to the beginning and start reading it again! Even though Scarlett is a piece of work, I loved her determination, her relationships, the conversations, & experiencing the oh-so-rapidly-changing world through her eyes. And it‘s made me want to read contemporary writing from the Reconstruction era, through other eyes (suggestions pls?)

RachelO I‘d expected racism, of course - but hadn‘t realised the scale of it, or the impact of hearing it from the narrator, rather than the characters.

This was a holiday read for me, which is obviously the way to go with chunksters. It‘s made me want to dive into some mord of the books I‘ve been putting off because of their size.
3w
Caroline2 I love this book too. 💗 3w
RachelO @Caroline2 😊 Liked it a lot more than I expected to! 3w
See All 18 Comments
Mdargusch One of my all time favorite books! Rereading this recently the racism really made me cringe. 3w
Cathythoughts Well done !!!! I saw the movie many many years ago... it‘s long 👍🏻 3w
Cinfhen I liked this one (sort of) but getting through it, was a bit of a struggle and some parts really did make me squirm. The racism was very uncomfortable. I‘m not sure I could sit through the film or ever reread this. 3w
BookwormM I hated Scarlet right up to the point where I loved her 🤣🤣 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review. I liked this book much more than expected. Then tried to watch the movie and couldn‘t finish it. 3w
CoverToCoverGirl Not a fan of the movie but I‘ve read the book three times. I liked Scarlet because she‘s a take no prisoners kinda gal in a time when that wasn‘t even a thing but her fixation on Ashley got on my nerves every time! 🤣😂 3w
RachelO @Mdargusch 😊 I‘m going to have to tackle Lonesome Dove at some point now! - 3w
RachelO @BookwormM 😂😂😂 This. Exactly! 3w
RachelO @Cinfhen It was very uncomfortable in places - I‘m glad I‘ve finally read it. From the comments here, maybe we don‘t need to sit through the film though. 3w
Cinfhen Yeah, I think you‘re right 😘 3w
RachelO @Cathythoughts @BarbaraTheBibliophage @covertocover Thanks! I‘m even worse with long films than long books, so I think you‘ve all just given me permission to skip that! And CJ, yes! Every time Ashley appears, he just goes down in my estimation - what WAS she thinking?! 3w
RachelO @Velvetfur Just remembered! This was a pre-2019 birthday present, so number 3 in my #readinggifts2019 (even if I ended up reading most of it on holiday on Kindle 🤔) 3w
Mdargusch Yes! Glad you will try LD now! But I loved, loved, loved this movie! Try it! The costumes, the actors, and seeing it playing out is worth it. You just have to keep in mind how old it is. 3w
Velvetfur @RachelO That's so cool! I haven't read it or seen the film but I know it's a classic; it's good to hear you loved it so much! 3w

Because the good folks at OS know how much map geeks like to pore over a map, they‘ve come up with a ‘puzzle‘ book. Only the puzzles aren‘t really puzzles, more like excuses to stare at more maps for more hours. And of course every page has an #easy question. #MayMovieMagic

#knowyouraudience!

Cinfhen Ha!!! That‘s fabulous!!!! 🔍❤️ 3w

Mehso-so

Time to catch up on my holiday reviews.

I‘d been looking forward to reading this for ages (slightly nonsensical time travelling historians - yes please!), but honestly was a little disappointed. Yes, there were 🦕 🦖 & war zones & the library of Alexandria, but there was so much else going on, you barely got to spend any time in the past. Chaotic fun, but not quite what I was expecting- I may try another in the series, one day! (Old grouch!)

It‘s officially summer. The best coffee shop in town is now open (yes, it‘s a beach hut in a car park. And?). There‘s much talk of jellyfish.

And I started this beautiful book this morning (thank you @TrishB ), 3 brothers growing up on the Tasmanian coast. Harry‘s breaking my heart already.

TrishB This post is so perfect ❤️ enjoy. I loved this book, but yes 💔 4w
Cathythoughts Jellyfish talk 🤔... always a sign of a good summer 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 4w
Soubhiville I got stung by a jellyfish once when I was little. It was excruciating. The book sounds good! Stacked 😊 4w

#bfc #bookfitnesschallenge Week 2 Check-in

1. Step goal 56300/60000 So close! I might actually have made it if I remembered to check the fitbit was on before I left the house! Still, not bad. Aim for next week - to actually make the numbers!
2. Finished ‘The Girl with Seven Names‘ - that‘s 3/6 total. Aim for next week - write reviews.

Thanks for doing this @wanderinglynn - I might just form some good habits before the 6 weeks is up!

Debated going daft for the motivation bit of the #bfc #bookfitnesschallenge, but...

It‘s a year and a week since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Once I‘d done the essentials (surgery, radiotherapy) I decided to tackle the other stuff. I wanted to get to within the NHS ‘healthy weight‘ guidelines before my 1 year scan in case I needed more surgery. I‘ve lost a stone (almost there) & my diet & exercise levels have both improved loads 👇

RachelO even tho there‘s loads further to go.

Added motivation: books by women that have gone on being awesome after having BC.

Hyeonseo grew up in North Korea, #soclose to the Chinese border that her brother would play in the river with boys from the other side. Her decision to cross the river was almost accidental, little more than a teenage prank, a young person quite literally pushing at boundaries and wanting to explore their world. But it had a lifetime of consequences for her and her family.

#maymoviemagic

Cinfhen Sounds harrowing 4w
RachelO @Cinfhen Surprisingly, I think she had a fair bit of luck on her side. Almost every decision she made could have turned out a whole lot worse. Her poor mother, though! 4w

My audiobook came in! I‘ve been on the wait list for this for MONTHS, so dropping everything & ramping it up to double speed to get through it.

AND photographic evidence that I actually left the house today. Got a 45 min walk in for #bookfitnesschallenge #bfc but managed to leave the Fitbit at home, so it isn‘t going to show in my stepcount. Predictable, eh @julesG ?

Also, the beach huts are back! (They seem to migrate in the autumn 🤷🏻‍♀️)

TrishB Gorgeous 💕 4w
RachelO @TrishB There are battenburg coloured beach huts this year (possibly new paint?) - just like 4w
4thhouseontheleft I get so frustrated when I forget my Fitbit, or, as happens more often, it needs to be charged, and I don't realize it until the end of the day. 4w
See All 15 Comments
RachelO @4thhouseontheleft it‘s so annoying! And so frequent!!! I tend to get eczema on my wrists, so usually carry my fitbit in a jeans pocket rather than wearing it - which means as soon as I get changed... 4w
TrishB Sounds lovely. Sadly we‘re probably not going to make it down this year! Too many other financial commitments. I‘m living it through your pics. 4w
julesG Migratory Beach huts? Do they fly to warmer climates? I tend to forget my fitbit in the charger, on the nightstand, or in the wrong pair of trousers. 😉 4w

RachelO @Reggie Joe Hill and his entourage are currently locked in my local library, no doubt wreaking mayhem amongst the stacks, and having a right old time! 😜 I had a ‘your reservation has arrived‘ email this morning... but the library‘s closed on Thursdays. Sure they do it deliberately to build the anticipation! 4w
RachelO @TrishB That‘s a shame - but I‘m sure exciting things are happening. Hope the exams are going well. 😘 4w
RachelO @julesG I reckon they do! Or at least drier climates, where a winter storm‘s less-likely to turn them to driftwood. Would love to know where they go! Glad I‘m not the only one this is a problem for 🙃 4w
RachelO @Clwojick Hmmm! I‘m going to have to come up with some sort of plan like that! 4w

A good #bfc #bookfitnesschallenge day today - walked to a circuits class in glorious sunshine (AND remembered to put my Fitbit on before I went?👍), then a quick dash to the shops in what looked like a bit of a shower, and swiftly turned into a downpour! 💦💧💦

And started tagged book on audio. Not my usual, but I was craving non-fiction, and this has a lots of Litsy positivity. I know very little about FLDS, so I‘m finding it shocking already.

Back in Devon, dreaming of Greece!

My weekly #bfc check-in:
✅ Fitness goal: Over 60000 steps (85000ish) across Greece, Turkey & the UK.
✅Book goal: Read ‘Just one Damn Thing After Another‘ & ‘Strange Weather in Tokyo‘ (AND finished Gone with the Wind - started way before #bfc, but it needs celebrating!) 2/6
😬 Will be able to do more cheering this week, now I‘m on actual wifi! But steps and books will both be competing with work, so more tricky..

Starting tagged book on my train journey home from the hols. Only a few pages in so far, but I feel I‘m in safe hands - she‘s a good storyteller! And I‘ve brought the weather back with me 🌞

ShyBookOwl I read this book a couple years back and still think of it often. I learned so much and yet it also read like a thriller. I was on the edge of my seat and even when I'd put it down, it would be constantly running through my head. I hope you enjoy it! 1mo

I‘ve found a new way of being rubbish at readalongs! I started this as part of the #readingenvyreadalong , but now I‘m on my hols I‘m rattling through it - so in the interest of actually finishing a chunkster, I‘m just going to keep reading.

I hadn‘t expected so much humour - the Rhett and Scarlett conversations are just wonderful!

AlaMich Yes, Scarlett could be a hoot when she wasn‘t being a giant selfish baby! (And even when she was!!) 😆 1mo
Oryx We have the same approach to readalongs I think . I do enjoy Scarlett, she's very entertaining. Her exclamations are great - "God's nightgown!" and "you can go to Halifax!" have become my two favourite phrases. Have a lovely holiday ? 1mo

“The motor-car has restored the romance of travel.

Freeing us all from the compulsion and contacts of the railway, the bondage to fixed hours and the beaten track, the approach to each town through the area of ugliness and desolation created by the railway itself, it has given us back the wonder, the adventure and the novelty which enlivened the way of our posting grandparents.”
