Come close, children, and see the living crocodile. A vintage 54 Buick Roadmaster. At least, thats what it looks like... There is a secret hidden in Shed B in the state police barracks in Statler, Pennsylvania. A secret that has drawn troopers for twenty years terrified yet irresistibly tempted to look at its chrome fenders, silver grille and exotic exhaust system. Young Ned Wilcox has started coming by the barracks: mowing the lawn, washing the windows, shovelling snow; its a boys way of holding on to his father recently killed in a strange road accident by another Buick. And one day Ned peers through the windows of Shed B and discovers the family secret. Like his father, Ned wants answers. He deserves answers. And the secret begins to stir...

I went into reading this a little skeptical. A "possessed" car? I didn't know how stephen king was going to pull this one off, but he sure did. From the very first page I was hooked. The format was a little different: a story within a story. But I found myself unable to put the book down, wanting to know more about the story being told, how it was going to end. It's not one of his best stories, but its one that will keep your interest.

Middle of the road King. A story about obsession, fathers and sons and a portal to another dimension. Creepy, weird but with enough heart to keep you invested in the fate of these characters. Decent book, not his worst but nowhere near his best.

D is for Dodge, as in the van that hit him in 1999. King bought it so that no one else could. He intended to take a sledgehammer to it, but it wound up being compacted.
King struggled both with his physical rehab & with writing after the accident. There was a time he thought he would retire. But thankfully he put that behind him. In fact, he seems to be writing at breakneck speed these days. And thank God for that.

TrishB Great pick 👍🏻 2y
dariazeoli Could you imagine if he had retired? So many great stories have come since that horrible day. 2y
AmyG Ah...I didn‘t know it was a Dodge. I remember when this happened. :( 2y
Sweettartlaura @dariazeoli I really couldn‘t - he hadn‘t even finished the Dark Tower series. Some day we‘ll have to live without him. But while he‘s alive, I‘m extremely grateful he keeps writing. 2y

Posting a little early due to tomorrow‘s outage.

Car was my obvious choice for C. From Christine to From a Buick 8, King has shown his love of cars and machines. The don't have to be the focus of the story as in Christine or Trucks but they do play an integral role. And they always seem to get a description that portrays human/animal qualities. Like my quote from "The Stand" where Trashcan Man meets The Kid.

GarthRanzz “And then the car was beside him, not idling but panting like a deadly animal which may or may not be tamed.” ~ Stephen King, "The Stand" 2y

This was a little different for King. Not horror at all. More like supernatural mystery. The characters and their stories are really the heart of this book. I like how the story is told from their different perspectives. I highly recommend the audiobook. There are different narrators for each of the main characters and it's really well done. The narrator who read Sandy was especially great. King checklist: 19 out of 69.

This was one of my least favorite King books, but it was still enjoyable. The story was more about life and relationships than about the car really.

StaceyKondla I loved that one!! So funny how every one can have a completely different favourite Stephen King book for completely different reasons. 2y

It's been some time since I have read this book. I first read it in middle school and loved it since. I never lend this book out to anyone, it's life is like my own. I wouldn't give this book up for a million years or a million dollars. It is what got me reading and helped me through all of my speech therapy, special needs education, the battle of autism. I don't know how else to explain it. Nor am I going to try to. #stephenking #horror

Inspired by #StephenKing17, I am delving into the master's backlist. This novel is a bit chubby about the midsection, but it is bookended by some truly moving passages about aging, grief, and the horrors of mankind when faced with the unknown. This is a supernatural tale with an oblique conclusion and stock characters, but its story of common people confronted with otherworldly forces contains some of King's best themes. An underrated, rough gem.

rohit-sawant Great review! This one is still on my TBR. 3y

#StephenKing17 #day7 #DNF I've never not finished a King novel, he could write an essay on artichokes and I'd read it, but this is my least favourite novel of his. I'm not sure if it's the actual story, I love Christine, or its the format of it. I think it's format, because it's written like a collection of short stories about the same object, and I'm not a huge lover of short stories. Though I do love his Skeleton Crew & Night Shift books.🤷🏻‍♀️

Josie I felt the same about this one, even though I did finish it! 3y

#planestrainsandautomobiles From a Buick 8: (Paranormal)automobile Orphan Train: (hopeless and sad) train. Catch-22: I know Catch-22 is a stretch but 1) I freaking love this book 2) It's hilarious 3) It's about a bombardier, you know the guy that releases bombs from planes, during World War II (see planes) so there you go! #photoadaynov16

Megabooks Is Orphan Train good? I'm on the fence. 3y
TheNextBook @Ebooksandcooks I enjoyed it. It's really sad but I learned a lot about a segment of history I wasnt familiar with. It was a really interesting story. 3y

chaoticgoodhufflepuff Seconded on Orphan Train. For me, it's one of those books filed under "I can recognize this was a well written story which covers an interesting and important aspect of history, but I don't think I can reread it." 3y
TheNextBook @Alfoster Yes!!! @krysannethemums yeah! I enjoyed it the first time around. I'm not sure when/if I would reread! 3y
GoldenGirl Yeah, Orphan Train was awesome! 3y

Perhaps not as well known outside the world of King, this car is not your everyday Buick. And you won't find your typical Sunday drivers. 👽 #planestrainsautomobiles #photoadaynov16

This is one of those King's that sharply divide opinion ( bit like Colorado Kid). Some people find it just too slow and subtle- I found it creepy rather than terrifying but hats off to him for always trying something different

Really long and tedious. The story spans 25 years, but nothing is answered at the end. If you think you would enjoy endless detail of a car that isn't really a car, you might enjoy this one.
