the writing style is really cool and convincing even if it is a lie. james frey has got to be one of the most unlikeable people ever, which made reading this even harder

I liked the story. Very harsh and realistic. Would recommend to anyone, especially to young people.

Edit - Bailed! I‘m starting this today. I have a cart filled with books, and always have trouble picking what to read next. So I came up with an idea of having my youngest son, 9 years old, pick a book for me. This is the third one he has picked for me. The first one was Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill, the second was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I loved both! So I‘m hoping this one will be good too. I‘ve read mixed reviews on this one. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Found another book on my "books I forgot/didn't know I had" bookshelf that sounds really interesting. Gonna try to start it this weekend. Drug addiction runs all through my family, unfortunately. My brother struggles very badly with it and he just recently had a very bad seizure caused from his using and his heart had stopped, thankfully they were able to resuscitate him. So I'm sure this book will hit me hard..

As a novel this book is very well written, however, it's marketed as a true story for some reason??? Weird. I figured it out relatively quickly that there was no way this book was 100% accurate. But I enjoyed the story and writing style, if nothing else, the book has emotion.

While I thought the book was interesting, it shouldn‘t have been presented as a memoir or an autobiography if most of it was made up.

(Day 16 - #Rehab)

*I cannot hear that word, rehab, without thinking of poor James Frey, author of the tagged book (purportedly a memoir, however the “facts” didn‘t quite add up), who was very nearly knighted by Oprah. But that was before she found the book to be a pack of ... well, semi-truths? Or semi-lies? Anyway, Frey was then publicly and shamefully dumped from her book club.

#AnglophileApril From my TBR...James Frey caused quite a literary uproar when he released his “memoir” about time spent in #rehab only to be called out by internet snoops as a fraud. Nobody was angrier than Ms. O who had endorsed his memoir and chosen it for her bookclub. I think it‘s a fine line labeling something from memory as NF or fiction. Although in Frey‘s case I believe he flat out lied about key story points. *images from Google *

After I read Lush by Kerry Cohen, a friend suggested I dig into this story of addiction next. Lots of controversy around whether it‘s accurate. Some parts are completely fabricated. But with an addict going through the throes of withdrawal and recovery, it‘s probably difficult to see things clearly and recount them either way. My mom is a psychiatric social worker, so she‘s been in these scenarios of violence, abuse and confusion. A happy sorry.

I saw this was an Oprah Book Club Pick but want to hear from you all what you thought about this one!

I did struggle through this book a little. The writing style was hard for me to get used to and it was really dark, as I am sure addiction truly is, but there were some parts so slow and vulgar I almost wanted to skip ahead. I think a lot of that is due to a blunt description of someone struggling with addiction, but still hard to read nonetheless. I did appreciate his honesty even if I didn‘t always agree with his opinions or conclusions.

Space Oddity makes me think about drugs which makes me think about A Million Little Pieces which makes me think I really loved this book because
1) I remember loving it
2) I never mailed Random House page 163 for a refund
3) It still sits on my shelf

The thing I remember most from the book is the description of his #teeth trauma. Sticks with you! After I read it...the scandal happened. I'll say no more because...spoilers. #JuneBookBugs

I enjoyed this NOVEL. I read it 1000 years ago before it was an Oprah Pick and his whole lying scandal came out. I think it is a great work of FICTION, a marvelous tale of redemption. My only objection to this book is that it does not realistically portray what it is really like to recover from an addiction using the 12 steps. It is much more intense and serious than Frey depicts. | This book is currently on the free shelf in my laundry room.

Remember the controversy around this one? Oprah was MAAAD.

Not a bad read but not a good one either. The format took awhile to get used to and I found it very repetitive at some points. At the times I felt like bailing an interesting part would pull me right back in. This was the kind of book that I was wishing I was reading something else but had invested enough time that I felt I had to finish. #notmyfav #cantwinthemall

While on our walk this evening we came across our streets little free library box and found this ol' gem. I say old because I was working at Chapters bookstore 12 or so years ago when this came out! Apologies! I'm a bit late with my #day9 photo of the #augustphotochallenge. I wasn't close to my books yesterday and I really wanted to rather submit a photo. So this is SOME of my all-time favourite books. It's really quite difficult to choose just a few but after sitting in front of my shelves for a while I decided that this is a pretty good mix.

July is a wrap and I finished out with 10 books. Nothing stood out as spectacular this month. Most were good- average. Many were continuations of series I started last month, so I'm happy to have some closure to those.

UGH I know I was kind of raving about this book yesterday but after reading on a bit, it went downhill pretty quick. Maybe it's just me but I felt it became repetitive and the writing style really started to grind on me. Maybe try reading it again some other day, but for right now, I'm leaving it.

I'm really enjoying this book right now. I'm 1/5 of the way through it and even though the writing style is a bit strange and there is a bucket of controversy around the author, I'm finding the way he talks about dependency and addiction enlightening
