Start Here is a field guide. It is not meant to be definitive or exhaustive. We imagine you taking it with you to the bookstore and thumbing through it as you decide if you'd like to try Dickens or Atwood or Melville for the first time. Perhaps you'll pull it up on your e-reader before pouring that Sunday morning coffee and downloading a book. And, after spending a few minutes reading a chapter, we hope you'll feel excited and confident about picking something new.

BookishMe @Crazeedi sadly, I have been dragging myself through the pages. It has great moments shared between the letter writers but I find them buried in the lengthy exchanges. 3w
Crazeedi @BookishMe isn't that funny how different people can think about books. That's why I love it here!! 3w
BookishMe @Crazeedi 💗💯% agree! ❣️ and I'm glad to return to the fold 💕📚💕 3w

TheAromaofBooks Great list!!! Thank you so much for joining, and I'll be sure to tag you with the lucky number this Sunday!! 😁 3w
Lcsmcat I love reading everyone‘s lists! 3w
Soubhiville Great list! 3w
Suet624 @thearomaofbooks what a great idea! 3w
Bklover Neverwhere is in my list too. 😉 3w
Megabooks 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤩🤩 3w
Reagan That‘s a great idea! 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Suet624 - I'm not picking the winning number until Sunday (Feb 2) so there is still plenty of time to post a list if you are interested in joining!! 😊 3w
Suet624 @TheAromaofBooks Thanks so much. I‘m swamped with must reads right now but if you‘re still doing this in a few months I‘ll make a list. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Suet624 - I get that!! I am planning to do it every month this year, so just let me know if you want added to the tagged list for March. If not, I'm sure you'll see the posts around whenever you're ready to jump on board!! 😁 3w
Suet624 @TheAromaofBooks perfect! Thanks! 3w
Bookzombie What a great list! 3w
Bookzombie @TheAromaofBooks This is such a neat idea! I‘m going to try and come up with list too. 3w
diovival @TheAromaofBooks This is a cool idea. I've done something similar with a friend. We called it the book lottery. 3w
TheAromaofBooks @Bookzombie - still plenty of time to join, as I won't be drawing until Sunday (Feb 2). Thanks for your interest!! It's a fun way to choose a book to read! 😊 3w
TheAromaofBooks @diovival - The funny thing is that I almost always use a random number generator to choose my next read, especially when I'm compiling my list of books to get from the library (small local branch, so almost everything I read comes in via inter-library loan, which means requesting it ahead of time). There are just so many books out there to read, and they all sound great, so sometimes it's nice to let fate decide! 3w

I haven‘t successfully completed a photo challenge in forever, so I‘m going to put in a solid attempt this month with the @bookriot #Riotgrams challenge! Who else is doing this challenge in June?

post image

It‘s June, which means it‘s time for a new #Riotgrams Challenge! 📚📸🎉

Macnjen How does this work? I just started following #bookstagram 9mo
Liberty @Macnjen You post a photo each day that pertains to that day‘s prompt and include the #riotgrams hashtag. ☺️ 9mo

I‘m this week‘s guest on What Should I Read Next! I had a great time. But because I still went into my nervous fugue state, a couple of corrections:
• Hold Still is a memoir.
• I confused Ben Macintyre with Ben Mezrich.
•The Memory Police is coming from Pantheon. (I also want to mention this was recorded 2 weeks ago; going forward, I will not be supporting JB.)

Thank you for listening, and thank you for joining me here. AND YAY BOOKS! 📚📚📚

Chrissyreadit What is JB? 10mo
Hestapleton @Chrissyreadit I‘m assuming she‘s referring to John Boyne and the controversy over his recently-announced, upcoming book. 10mo

#Riotgrams #DayOne #Shelfie

Since I‘m at work on a Saturday, here is a partial shelfie of the bookshelf in my office. Lots of teaching related books, including Shakespeare, poetry, American Lit, and Spanish textbooks.

post image

Oops, I caught this a day late, but I am going to jump in on #Riotgrams for February starting today. It‘s been awhile since I attempted a photo challenge, so I am excited for this one. They are fun because they challenge me to dig into my library to find books that match the prompt.

Yay for February!

It‘s the first day of the @24in48 #readathon! How is everyone doing out there? I am only able to give 12 hours this time (for reasons I discuss on next week‘s episode of All the Books), so I am starting tomorrow, but know that I am here cheering you on with sleeping kittens! (Did you know kittens have no bones? That‘s a rock fact.) 📚❤️📚

vkois88 Ummm I fail. I got 0 lol... but in my defense, it was my book, and I didn't realize I even had chocolate on me. Bc I hadn't eaten any. Things that happen in my life 😂😂😂 13mo
wanderinglynn @TheReadingMermaid I‘ve never: (1) lost a library book; (2) dropped a book in the bath (because I take showers); & (3) reached the lending limit at the Library (at least not that I can remember). 13mo
wanderinglynn @vkois88 I think that means you win the biggest booknerd award! 😂😂😂🙌🏻 13mo
wanderinglynn @Crazeedi Which 3 for you? 13mo
wanderinglynn @GingerAntics Which 2 for you? 13mo
vkois88 😂😂😂😂 there are definitely much worse awards to win! Lol I usually reference some kind of book at work, or light up when someone mentions them... they all just kinda look at me, shake their heads, and call me a nerd 😁 13mo
C.Perone 5 points 13mo
wanderinglynn @C.Perone Which 5 have you never done? 13mo
wanderinglynn @vkois88 I do the same thing. That‘s why I ❤️ Litsy—you are my people! 13mo
Jeannineth I got a big fat 0. I guess it‘s because I have read my fair share of books in my 57 years. Most I have done more than once. And I paid for that lost book. Lol 13mo
TiredLibrarian 2; never lost a library book or dropped one in the bath. 13mo
wanderinglynn @TiredLibrarian As a librarian, I guess it would be bad form to lose a library book. 😂 13mo
C.Perone @wanderinglynn Dog-earred, dropped in bathtub; reached library limit; fell asleep; cracked spine 13mo
wanderinglynn @C.Perone You are good to have never cracked a spine or dog-earred! 🙌🏻 13mo
C.Perone @wanderinglynn Good or very obsessive compulsive 😂😂 13mo
Crazeedi @wanderinglynn lost a book, dropped a book in bath, read a book 5 times 13mo

You know your a bookworm when your boxing all your books and you hit box 22 and your still going 👀😳 and you already have a suitcase and a bag full of books your taking with you 🤣🤣🤣🤣📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚📚

MallenNC When I moved recently dealing with my books was the biggest issue! I kept finding more. I had to donate/trade/give away a lot and I still have a big collection. Good luck. 14mo
Amiable We just moved about 2 weeks ago --28 boxes of books. I thought my husband was going to leave without me and the boxes. 😳 14mo
ravenlee We moved in September. Overheard one of the brawny young movers say to the other, “How many more boxes of books can there be?!” after about 20. There were at least 40, plus several more we moved ourselves. #itsnothoardingifitsbooks 14mo
See All 7 Comments
Ddzmini @MaklenNC @Amiable and @ravenlee now I don‘t feel bad I ended up with 24 and only need one more so 25 total. I still have the suitcase and bag I‘m carrying in the plain but I‘m good with that 😋📚📖 14mo
Bookishthoughts I love when people are helping you move. And they hit the book boxes, they always go to lift them quickly then stop and say" * insert cuss word here* what do you have in there, books"? Why yes *Bob* I do, thank you.?? 14mo
Amiable @ravenlee Haha... Same! We hired a moving company that sent three strapping young men. I overheard one of them swear and say "holy ^*%# there's another pile of them over here!" #sorrynotsorry 14mo
Ddzmini @LazyDays and @Amiable this will be the first time I‘m not moving my stuff myself (because hey California to Hawaii 👀😳) so I won‘t be here when the pick up the boxes but I‘ll have my Nephew record what they say so I can laugh 🤭 🤣🤣🤣📖📚📚 14mo

1. Wallow in awesome.

2. Read at least 12 volumes of nonfiction or poetry by Indigenous writers.

3. Reduce La TBR from 355 books to 250 books or less. Preferably way less.

4. Read some frickin chunksters instead of letting them sit on La TBR for years on end.

@Texreader and @CouronneDhiver (and also @MrBook) ask us to share who are our #firstfollow #firstofollow on here and I finally figured out how to find out. Book Forum magazine always adds soooo many titles to my TBR! 😱

Are any of these on your #TBR list?

gradcat Some good ideas on that list...thanks! 1y
julesG I found the most common DNF books list much more interesting. A lot of people share my DNF taste. 😂 https://bookriot.com/2018/08/21/books-never-finished-on-goodreads/. But I have to say, I read a few on this list and liked them. 1y
Libby1 I‘ve read 26 on this list. There‘s only one there that I still want to read, and I‘m glad that I currently have it home from the library! 1y
MaleficentBookDragon @julesG I #DNF 2 off the list, chose not to even bother with 9 of them, enjoyed 2 of them a lot, and have another 2 of them on my #TBR. This was an intetesting list. But The Goldfinch needs to be added to it. I hated that book. 1y
LiteraryLona God, I hated The Goldfinch too! @MaleficentBookDragon So glad it wasn't just me 1y

My #MakeMeReadIt votes are tallied! I'm really excited for all of these. I have a couple of other things I have to read this month for book clubs that I'm going to knock out first, but I'm dying to start Lethal White!

ReadingDownUnder Waiting for Lethal White on audio from my library! I listened to two of the first theee and just love the guy‘s voice. So I decided to listen again, even though it‘s a longer wait. 😕 (edited) 1y
Lel2403 @ReadingDownUnder if it‘s the same as the UK version, I thought Robert Glenister was brilliant and really brought it to life. 1y
ReadingDownUnder @Lel2403 It is! It‘s how I imagine Cormac sounds!! 1y
Lel2403 @ReadingDownUnder absolutely ❤️ 1y
ReadingDownUnder @Lel2403 Ack!! Cormoran!!! I just got a notice for a cheap Cormac McCarthy and had it on the brain, I guess. Cormoran would have just tolerated my messing up of his name with an inward eye roll. 1y

Good people of Litsy, kindly recommend me a book to read. In dire need of recommendations!
#reader #litsy #newpost #recommend #books

callielafleur Sleeping Giants is a fun read, and the start to a good series (though the third book falls off a little). 2y
Sjhaug I just finished Ginny Moon and thought it was great. If you haven‘t read a Rabbit Cake, it is a must read. Good luck! 2y
Burghbookaddict Just finished for a book club. Not something I would have ever picked up in my own but I ended up loving it! 2y
See All 8 Comments
rwmg If you are feeling strong enough, I would choose A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. Otherwise Bel Canto by Ann Patchett or Sleeping Angel by Greg Herren. 2y
Palimpsest I recently finished The Stranger and loved it, but I could see how someone might hate it too. I was reading Existentialism is a humanism, but stopped to read The Stranger as there is a commentary about it in the second section. I recommend The Name of the Rose if you like mystery/ history. 2y
Tertubotn A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. It‘s about an aristocrat who gets house arrest at the fanciest hotel in Moscow after the revolution. Beautifully written, and definitely NOT boring. Has a lovely fairy tale feel to it at times. I was sad when it ended. :( 2y
CMB It depends on what you want to read at this moment. If you‘re into something more scholarly, I‘m currently reading Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson. If you think you‘re in the mood for a mystery, Louise Penny‘s stories revolve around the fictional village of Three Pines located just north of the US border in Canada, south of Montreal. Start with her first, Still Life. You will like Armand Gamache, Head of Sûreté. He‘s genuine. 2y
CMB Being a history geek, means I read a lot of historical fiction. I‘m almost done with War of the Roses-Stormbird by Conn Iggulden. It‘s about the Lancaster-York feud over the throne of England starting with the reign of Henry VI. It‘s described as the original Game of Thrones and I‘d have to agree with this! 2y

Okay, y'all, I need some recommendations. I've been doing a lot of researching on my own, but I figure some of you can fill in anything I'm missing. So...I'm looking for true crime novels and documentaries. (If they deal with serial killers or cults, that's a plus, but not a requirement.)

Meeko93 This one I've heard is good. 2y

Sarah83 Or this one. I read this and liked it 2y
Eggs Ask @Kaye -she loves those 😊 2y
GarthRanzz This one won the Pulitzer and is set where I live 2y
MicrobeMom Netflix Wild Wild Country 2y
vivastory I second @GarthRanzz recommendation of I'll Be Gone etc. I also really liked 2y
MicrobeMom Not sure this is true crime but I loved it! 2y
TheNextBook I second Under the Banner of Heaven and the Wild Wild Country Netflix documentary. Also suggest In Cold Blood of course and if I think of anything else I‘ll come back 2y
Jadams1776 The one downside to this one is it splits time with the World‘s fair, but you also get a lot about H H Holmes 2y
Jadams1776 The Keepers is a good Netflix documentary 2y
JoScho I am pretty sure @Kaye has been reading a good bit of true crime lately. 2y
Kaye How many do you need ? I just saw your post. 2y
Kaye Is that enough or do you need more ? @JacintaMCarter 2y
Billypar I really liked Killers of the Flower Moon. 2y
Leftcoastzen Obsessed with the film as well though not a documentary 2y
JacintaMCarter @Kaye Wow! I should have come to you from the beginning. This should definitely be enough to get me the information I need. Thank you! And thanks to everyone for your suggestions! 2y
Kaye Well, good luck with whatever you‘re doing. Most if the ones I mentioned were serial killers. A couple could be put in other categories. I‘ve read lots of true crime. @JacintaMCarter (edited) 2y
Lizpixie I have some Aussie true crime recommendations if you want. This one is about the torture murder of a young nurse in my hometown in the 80s 2y
Lizpixie This one is about a woman who killed her partner, butchered him like a cow and served him up for his kids to find 2y
Lizpixie This one is about the backpacker serial killings in the Belangalo forest 2y
Lizpixie This one is about the English backpackers who were hunted on the highway between Alice springs and Darwin in the NT 2y
Lizpixie This is about the spree killer Martin Bryant who took an automatic to Port Arthur in Tasmania & shot a lot of tourists including children. This is the one that changed our gun laws for the better 2y
Lizpixie And you can‘t go wrong with any of the Underbelly series, especially the first one which is about the drug wars in Melbourne in the 1990s-2000s 2y
Lizpixie Or if you want a historical mystery, this is about the Beaumont children who vanished on January 26th 1966 on their way to Glenelg beach in SA. They‘ve never been found and no ones been charged. They just disappeared! 2y
Lizpixie This is about the serial murders of elderly women in their homes in Sydney 2y
Lizpixie And finally, this one is about the “Milperra Massacre” which was all over the news when I was a teen. Fathers Day, 1984, seven people die during a shootout between rival bikie gangs, the Bandidos & the Comancheros. Among the dead was a 15yr Old girl, caught in the crossfire. 2y
JacintaMCarter Thanks, @Lizpixie! Most of the true crime I've read is from America, so it will be interesting to check out some from Australia as well. 2y
Lizpixie @JacintaMCarter no worries babe! We have our fair share of nut jobs here too, ours tend to be a lot more nuttier than the rest🤪Katherine Knight sliced cuts off her partner, made a pot roast & served it up on the table with his kids names on placecards at each plate!🤢 2y
Godmotherx5 Good luck! 2y

Pretty much all of the books I'm reading right now have terrible male characters who are just the worst. Like, zero redeemable qualities. They're just all giant douche canoes who treat everyone like shit, just because they're dudes, so that's their right. So I'm done reading for the night and instead I'm going to just listen to this song on repeat for a while:

Bookzombie Thanks for sharing that song! I really need to watch that show. 2y
CouronneDhiver Douche canoes 😂😂😂😂 2y
GrilledCheeseSamurai What ☝️☝️ @CouronneDhiver said. 😂 2y

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Omg that song!! 😂💕 Also douche canoe! Are you Canadian too,? I've never heard that used elsewhere. 👌 2y
Elisa I am very sorry you had to abandon reading because of all the douche-canoes, but thank you for doing it in such a humorous way!!! That song is hilarious 😁 2y
Kaye Well, as a person who‘s been around the block so many times, I‘ve worn a rut in it, let me say all men have the ability to get on your last nerve at times. I‘m sure men could say the same about us ,too. Sometimes it‘s best to find a people- free zone so you can get away from it all. Hope you find a book that doesn‘t have an annoying man in it. (edited) 2y
Leftcoastzen Hilarious song. Thanks for posting.May your next read have a bearable man in it.😁 2y
Libby1 🤣 2y
Gezemice Not all men are like that. But men in thrillers pretty much all. 2y
