Two old women was an excellent story passed down from generation to generation. A short fast paced book. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is an interesting piece of WWII history, but I was disappointed in the book itself. It seemed to skip over some key aspects of the initial Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands. The stories of the different people didn‘t make the impact I expected and felt somewhat disjointed. It may be even harder for young readers without any prior knowledge to follow the course of events.

This summer I had the opportunity to visit the Alaska Aviation Museum in Anchorage, and it includes an exhibit about the Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands during WWII. As I walked through it I realized I‘ve had this book in my class library shelf for a few years and never read it myself. I started it today during our seminar reading time.

Free-spirited Birdie is struggling as a single mother and waitress at a backwoods lodge in Alaska when she meets Arthur, a mysterious and reclusive man with unfathomable secrets. When Birdie and her 6-year-old daughter Emaleen move to Arthur's remote cabin, their idyllic wilderness existence comes face to face with the most dangerous thing in the woods. An atmospheric fantasy vividly and realistically told.

This is a beautifully written bittersweet story of a middle aged couple trying to make their way in Alaska and the found family the find along the way. There are some possible fantastical elements, but overall it does a great job of demonstrating the harsh reality of early 20th century Alaska. It was not perfect for me though. The last third of the book really annoyed me and felt unnecessary.⬇️

I'm not really sure what to think of all of this, overall, but I do believe that if this young man had listened to advice, taken precautions, and been better prepared, he would have been able to survive. I think we share a lot of personality traits and opinions, but at the same time, for being so academically smart, he made some foolhardy choices that led to his demise.

4/5 - when a book makes you love its central characters and then has horrible things happen to them…and that makes you very sad, anxious or angry….is that a sign of a good author? i liked this book and its characters but the suffering they go through - it was almost too much. it did make me want to see alaska!

I sympathize with Chris McCandless‘ family over his loss, but also understand how he hurt them with his unstinting moral code. It seemed to be more than youthful hubris. A deliberate unwillingness to communicate with loved ones caused them all so much hurt. If he had come out of the Alaska wilderness alive, one hopes that he would have learned enough from the experience of extreme isolation to resolve his familial differences. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it.
