The Rook
The Rook: A Novel | Daniel O'Malley
"The body you are wearing used to be mine." So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her. She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own. In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, THE ROOK is a richly inventive, suspenseful, and often wry thriller that marks an ambitious debut from a promising young writer.

Wanted to reread this because Starz made a show based on it, which I'm pretty psyched about. I might need to reread the second one now.

I'm also going to go ahead and use it for the psychological thriller space for #BookishBingo.

IndyHannaJones @Lostinagoodbook so that is exactly what irritated me about the premier. The new Myfawny is super sassy and funny...and the tv one was...not. I honestly was disappointed because it is such a goofy, surreal book and thr show just felt like a government drama. 2w
IndyHannaJones @Jillylovesbooks the books are super funny and the 'aesthetic' of the show feels really different sooo...take that as you will... 2w

Truly enjoying my re-read of this book via Hoopla audio - I‘ve been driving for work so much this week I already clocked more than 4 of the whopping 17 hours...I can‘t believe how much I forgot in 7 years!
My only quibble is that the narrator does this weird thing with her voice where she drags the last word of each sentence out and kind of down - I get stuck on things like that and they annoy me! Too picky... 🙄

GypsyKat I love this series!!! ❤️🖤❤️🖤 3w

Anyone read The Rook? I really liked it, but used some disturbing language I just couldn‘t get behind. They‘re making a show about it. Not sure how I feel and if I‘ll watch. Thoughts?

TrishB I‘ve read a while ago and enjoyed at the time! Don‘t particularly remember language, but it is a while ago. 3w
DGRachel I read it several years ago and struggled with the pacing of it. I don‘t remember having issues with the language, but I also don‘t really remember much of it at all. I may give the show a chance, but I don‘t have high expectations. 3w

#AudioBook Well!😵 I‘m wondering exactly what to think! This had a very compelling story with lots of extremely fun characters! Lots of court intrigue too. The villains were a bit corny, So you might want to go for the print version 🤣 and the ending was kind of meh. But overall it was really fun and I‘m looking forward to the tv series! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ /5

3.5 Stars

The Rook blends fantasy, sci-fi, action, and more into an exciting novel about Myfanwy, a woman who wakes up with no memory of her past self. Through letters her previous self wrote (knowing this was to come) and through her own investigation, Myfanwy works to figure out who wiped her memories and tried to kill her. It‘s not an easy task considering she works for an elite government agency that deals with the paranormal.

I really thought I would love this book! The plot, characters, and world were all great. But the constant, mostly gratuitous body shaming grated on me, and toward the end, the author turned to a device I particularly hate to up the drama. I also didn‘t find the end very satisfying. Still, reading it on the couch with a hot chocolate and my husband was a great way to end a snowy Saturday! #NewYearWhoDis @Sarz @monalyisha

OK… the description of the American supernatural agency is not great. I love that it‘s called Croatoan, but copying the Checquy in structure? The idea that a freed slave would ever negotiate to be allowed to steal children from their families? Taking advantage of theoretical protections set up by the Native Americans and not protecting them? I don‘t like it.

At least it‘s not as bad as Ilvermorny 😬

I just finished this book and have mixed feelings about it. When I started reading, I thought, this is my kind of book. Then I got to the endless info dumps. I was on the point of giving up at halfway. Luckily, that was when I arrived at some actual story, with really weird supernatural stuff, and things picked up considerably. Still, I don't feel I can give it more than a so-so.

I believe there's a film coming. It could make a very good film.

First thought on reading my #NewYearWhoDis list from @Sarz —wow, great taste! I‘ve read and loved a full third of the books (Stiff is cut off in the screenshot) and liked a couple of others! Second thought—I know which one I‘m reading first. Years ago, I tried The Rook on audio and just couldn‘t get into it. It was solid, and I liked it, but there are other books with similar magical powers that I found more exciting or compelling, like the Red Queen series and the Darker Shade of Magic series. I will read the sequel and recommend the book for people who enjoy books about magic or secret government organizations. It was solidly above average in expression, plot, and characters, but not special.
