I made it through this for book club tomorrow but woke up today with the flu. So I read it for nothing! Littens, I‘m throwing myself a 50th bday party on Saturday. It‘s Tues night and I‘m shaking with chills and so achy. Keep a good thought!

LeeRHarry Feel better really soon! 🤞🏻 2d

Halfway through this month‘s book club pick and struggling. So boring! Hope it gets better. At least it‘s short!

#bookclub

LeeRHarry I actually enjoyed this one - it was nice and sciency 😏 and short as you say 😊 3d
ReadingDownUnder @LeeRHarry I‘m not really into science. For non-fiction I prefer political history or memoir/biography. Yawn!!! 3d
CarolynM I haven't read this but I did see a really good TV dramatisation of the story. It was called Longitude too. Maybe you could watch that instead of reading? 3d
ReadingDownUnder @CarolynM HA! I found a 30 min YouTube thing about it but even that was too boring. Nearly finished! 3d

Question: This book is #13 on the 100 Most Loved Books (Great American Read). What about it do you think appeals to American readers?

Background: It‘s my book club pick in Australia and the group often asks me questions that make me speak for all Americans. The life of an expat! So I‘m doing some research.

This is the 7th book in the Quilting Mystery series and I've read them all. I adore the core group of characters and the new characters are always endearing. The wonderful descriptions add to the richness of the story. Although not set in a small town, Marks has managed to create a cozy community in the suburbs of LA. She is a gifted writer in the genre. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!

While I will never understand anyone's need to do things like this, I say "you do you" and I'll read about it from my comfy chair! This felt like Australian Eat, Pray, Love with equines and I devoured it in less than 24 hours. A woman, her 10-year old daughter, a horse and two donkeys spend a year hiking a trail in Eastern AU. If you like books about searching for meaning or getting back to nature, or roughing it in the AU Bush, check it out.

Loved the beginning and had high hopes for this ARC. But outlandish theories led to extreme measures taken (personal security team, tech experts, etc.) and an unsatisfying ending. The reason for investigating was very weak. But the writing was good and the main character like-able. She has the two most adult teenage boys. Quite unrealistic. I‘d read more by her, though. This is the fifth in the series but my first.

One of my reading goals this year was to write more about my books. I‘ve been using a Litsy and Goodreads and just started Netgalley. Since Wed I‘ve read and posted reviews for four “read now” books. A Bittersweet Surprise | Cynthia Ellingsen

This started out slow with minimal character development beyond using dialogue to repeatedly state the character‘s personality. However, I was pleasantly surprised when several storylines emerged and ended up interwoven. The characters became more interesting and the tension was built over a couple of different problems with no clear solutions. I ended up liking it!

Library + Mystery = Cozy Success!
One of the more substantial cozies I‘ve read recently. The setting was quaint and the characters were engaging. This is book 4 and although I haven‘t read the first 3, the story was fine as a stand-alone. The author introduces all of the characters well without rehashing the previous plots. I will be revisiting Taylorsford, VA again soon!
To be published in Jan 2020.

This was average. The dialogue did not ring true. There was little character development. That said, I‘ve read this genre before and while it‘s not really for me, it a decent offering for those who like “historical chick lit.”

Just a normal memoir with the words transcendent, spiritual, divine, etc mixed in with self-serving stories of parties, alcohol, and sex. The author's non-existent moral compass and sense of entitlement, with first "daddy" then her husband providing for her, was difficult to digest. I have always admired Ben Bradlee's work as an editor. His choice of third wife makes me think he was more shallow than I imagined, even knowing his record with women.

Question: How do you feel about broken spines? I‘m torn! On the one hand, I hate them and I like when my books look like new. On the other hand, it‘s easier for me to read them if I open wide and I do love the look of a well-worn book. Thoughts?

CarolynM I also like books that look unread, but cracking the spine can't always be avoided🙂 4mo
Caroline2 I hate cracked spines but sometimes they are unavoidable. The book I just finished was new and I was trying so hard to keep the spine nice but I couldn‘t open it enough to read so now the spine is ruined. 🙄 whatcha gonna do tho?! 🤷‍♀️ 😆 4mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Nope! That's my big petpeeve. I can do dog-ear pages, but not a broken spine. Which can be tricky, cuz I love used books. But in my city people tend to treat books well, so i can usually find books in excellent condition. 4mo

I received this as an ARC. It‘s the sixth book in the series and I haven‘t read the first five. That said, the author gave enough info about the characters to make it a stand-alone. The mystery is interesting enough, although the suspect was clear to me early on. There‘s a lot of description about glassmaking, which didn‘t interest me. I liked that she had characters that were LGBT and one with autism.

There‘s a great book in here but there‘s a lot to slog through in order to find it. The beginning is horrid. Bloated, meandering phrases that don‘t make a lot of sense. Some call that poetic. I always think “what the?!?!” LOVED it from Part Two until about the last 25%. So much I‘d have cut! Glad I persevered as it was for book club.

CarolynM The feeling that there's a better book struggling to get out of the one that's been published is one I am quite familiar with. It's usually the literary ones that I feel like that about. 4mo
