Krampus
Krampus: The Yule Lord | Brom
“Terrific. A wild ride….I loved it. It hooked me and I couldn’t put it down.” —Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy Acclaimed author and artist Brom raised eyebrows and pulse rates with The Child Thief, his grim, brilliantly audacious, gorgeously illustrated reimagining of the Peter Pan legend. So what does this innovative fantasist do for an encore? He tinkers darkly with the beloved mythology of Santa Claus. Set in Appalachia, Krampus the Yule Lord is a twisted fairytale about a failed West Virginia songwriter who gets ensnared on Christmas Eve in an eternal war between a not-so-saintly Saint Nick and his dark enemy Krampus, aka Black Peter, an ancient trickster demon. Krampus the Yule Lord is Gregory Maguire (Wicked) meets Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell) in the realm of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, as Clive Barker (Mr. B. Gone) works his dark sorcery from the shadows. Once again featuring Brom’s chillingly beautiful artwork throughout, Krampus the Yule Lord is a feast of wonder straight from the kitchen of Sweeney Todd.

This was okay. I felt like it started off really good, got lost in the middle and then just made it‘s way to the ending. I loved the art though. I thought that was really well done. I just really enjoyed his other book, The Child Thief, so much more. So I know he is capable of writing an amazing story. He just didnt execute this time.

Had a moment today where I realized my tbr this month was entirely too ambitious. Currently battling retail hell. Hoping to get some reading in later today and tomorrow. Currently reading this by C. J. Brightley and listening to Krampus.

CindyMyLifeIsLit I love Krampus! But you‘re missing out on Brom‘s amazing artwork! 6mo
eriedoodle I have a copy of the book! It's beautiful. I just haven't had time to sit and read it so I'm listening instead. All of Brom's books are gorgeous!!! 6mo

Krampus: The Yule Lord by Brom was an awesome tale of revenge and true wickedness, but also personal belief, friendship, loyalty, and family.

I was expecting this book to be wicked dark and focused only on terror. However, the horror & gore elements were rather light.

While this book may not have been at all what I was expecting, I still absolutely loved it!

This book was so much different than I expected, and so great. Not that I expected it not to be great, but I was quite surprised and taken by the Krampus/Santa connection to Norse mythology. It really makes me want to read more, because as a person of 50% Scandinavian heritage, it's pretty sad that the most I know about Norse mythology comes from Marvel, and now this book. Luckily I've already picked up a couple books!

Anyways, I loved this!

I loved everything about this book, the writing, characters, story flow, and the factual backstory about Yuletide mythology.

Although this is a book about who would win if Santa and Krampus got into a fight, it speaks on a deeper level about hitting rock bottom and receiving redemption. I also loved the comparison in conflict between human characters and mythological legends.

Just made it to the hand drilling scene & I hope that the General & Dillard get their comeuppance. With that said, Santa seems just as despicable as those two. Not sure yet, but Krampus might be an antihero.

Also, the scene where Santa was bombarded by Krampus‘s helpers was epic. This is building up to a kick ass battle where the humans will be pulled into the mix.

blurb
AlexanderSBrown

Am loving the lead character, Jesse. His backstory about being a starving artist rings true on so many levels as he‘s simply trying to be a good father to his daughter. I can‘t help but think he will eventually win back his wife, Linda.

Today's #readjanuary prompt is "dreaming of a warmer (or colder) climate." It's been unseasonably warm this winter (at least here in Florida) - so, I opted for a colder climate. This book takes place in West Virginia at Christmas time, so it definitely qualifies as a colder climate. Also, I totally recommend this book for Christopher Moore and Tom Robbins fans.

Day 22 of #SeasonsReadings2016 is #ChristmassyReads

I haven't read a lot of Christmas-themed books (other than children's books). I'm also not a fan of all of the holiday-themed movies my mom can't get enough of. I promise I'm not a Scrooge though!

I'm not reading any Christmassy books this year, but I did read this heartwarming holiday tale last year to fit one of my challenges. 😂

If you're looking for a holiday read that's a bit off the beaten path, this is it. I read it last December and it totally surprised me with how great it is! It's dark, funny, full of magic (which I'm not a huge fan of) yet feels surprisingly real. I'll be skipping this one in lieu of N0S4A2 this year, but will definitely be reading this again!

#12DaysOfXmasPhoto #day2 #evilsanta There ain't no more evil Santa than the legend of Krampus. Believed to have originated in Austria, Krampus is the one who comes for the naughty children. With a goats lower body, horns, covered in dark hair, a lolling red tongue, carrying chains & in some versions, branches to wack bad children with, I'd be surprised if there were any misbehaving kids in Austria around Xmas! Totally terrifying. #HoHoUrgh
