Gripping and unforgettable, here is a spellbinding mix of the mysteries that inhabit our everyday livesand a mind-bending exploration of what happens when someone vanishes without a trace.Ever since his father disappeared when he was nine years old, Ian Kennedy has had a penchant for stories about missing peopleand a knack for finding them. Now hes a private investigator with an impressive track record. But when a woman enters his London office and asks him to find her lost daughter, Ian faces a case he fears he cannot solveand one he knows he must.Laura Lenskys stunning twenty-one-year-old daughter, Peri, has been missing for over two yearsa lifetime, under the circumstances. But when Ian learns the details of her disappearance, he discovers eerie parallels to an obscure Celtic mythand to the haunting case that launched his career, an early success hes never fully been able to explain. Though Ian suspects Peri may have chosen to vanish, his curiosity leads him to take on the search. Soon he finds himself drawing not only from the mysteries that have preoccupied his adulthood, but from the fables and folklore that pervaded his youth. What follows is a journey that takes Ian and those who care for Peri into the Highlands of Scotland, as the unknowns of the past and present merge in the caseand in their lives. Rich in pathos and steeped in secrets, The Mysteries opens a thought-provoking door from one world into the heart of another, where some of our most perplexing enigmasand their answersare startlingly alive. From the Hardcover edition.

Bailedbailed

I‘ve had this book for years, my undergrad roommate gave it to me, and I finally tried to read it. It was not for me. The writing was meandering, and seemed like the words dropped on each other like rocks, not peaceful nor interesting. I made it halfway through the first chapter and said no. Someone who likes 1st person mysteries might enjoy this more than me.

Soubhiville Half on/half off the bed and the tongue out 🤣. So cute! 2y
Leftcoastzen Cute big paws ! 2y
LeahBergen That little tongue! (edited) 2y

GondorGirl I'm sorry the book didn't work for you, but that pupper is perfect! 🥰 2y
iread2much @Soubhiville thank you! I‘ve tried beds with bolsters and she refuses. She like to be like a Dali clock I suppose. 😂 2y
iread2much @Leftcoastzen 🐕❤️ thank you! 2y
iread2much @LeahBergen just the tiny tip 😊💜 2y
iread2much @GondorGirl thank you! I hope someone somewhere loves that book. Kiyo is my bestest girl ❤️🐕💜 2y

Cheshirecat913 First one that popped into my head. 6y
emtobiasz Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series is basically magic police procedurals: 6y

emtobiasz In YA, the Jackaby books combine fantasy and mystery as well 6y
emtobiasz I liked the alternate history 6y
emtobiasz (Sorry to spam your post; I quite like the overlap of mystery and fantasy! Hope other littens can be more help with your 3rd idea!) 6y
Abby-J This whole series is full of fantasy and mystery. It has a few LGBTQ+ characters, too. (edited) 6y
jenniferw88 @emtobiasz ☺ at least I know I'll have one reader lol! 😙 6y
Chocamanda This is more of a cozy, but I love the Magical Bakery series. The first book is 6y
Shvonne It‘s the 2nd in the series 6y
BooksAtNight There is a mystery aspect in 6y
xicanti A.F.E Smith's Darkhaven series and Elizabeth Bear's New Amsterdam series are both enjoyable fantasy mysteries named for their first volumes. DARKHAVEN's got a few trope issues, but Smith irons them out in the later books. 6y
drokka Not a mystery, but a fantasy heist story 6y
BookFreakOut The Parasol Protectorate book are steampunk/supernatural with some mystery, I believe there are a few investigator characters. 6y
BookFreakOut Agree w/Every Heart a Doorway, there are 3 novellas so far and they all have LGBT+ main characters: ace, trans & gay are the major ones. They‘re fantasy rather than dystopian, but Down Among The Sticks And Bones and Beneath The Sugar Sky are books 2&3, all incredibly good! 6y

My Top 17 Read in 2017 (started by @Cinfhen I think?). Mysteries abound. This is why I‘m finally going to do a reading challenge next year — I really want to diversify. #17in2017

Cinfhen Sometimes a certain genre is just the perfect fit! Although I see u have a GN I've been wondering about 6y
britt_brooke Nice! 6y
tomes4gnomes @Cinfhen I love Roz Chast and this book is one I recommend to almost everyone. It is difficult subject matter — aging parents, death, grief — handled so well. 6y

Andrew65 I love House of Silk and The Crossing Places. 6y
Tamra I‘ve been meaning to get to House of Silk for awhile now! 6y
Wbabdullah What challenges are you gonna do? 6y
tomes4gnomes @Wbabdullah This is my first year doing any reading challenges other than the standard Goodreads set-number-of-books-to-read goal. I‘m definitely doing Popsugar, but I‘m intrigued by so many others and I may be getting in over my head by adding Read Harder, Modern Mrs. Darcy, and Mount TBR. It all depends how many books I can manage to read this year since I‘m rather slow. What about you? 6y
Wbabdullah I‘m doing #dystopianblues as a swap (my first swap ever and probably last cuz Lord knows I don‘t need to be shopping for books right now) and #litsypassport where I‘m reading myself around the world based on the number of countries I selected and a random generator of countries by a fellow Litten! (Sorry, that was a mouthful!) I‘m eyeing that pop sugar though...I probably will join 6y
tomes4gnomes I love dystopian/post-apocalyptic. Let me know if you read some great ones from the swap. A friend just recommended a few new-to-me titles the other day: The Book of the Unnamed Midwife, and the Unwind series. Litsy passport sounds truly challenging and enlightening, a worthy goal! 6y
