Epic. The first half is pre-apocalypse. Most characters and events here will seem to have no relevance later. Post- apocalypse, the story really begins with a whole new cast of characters. Getting over this hump is crucial. By the end it all comes together, even though this is the first part of a series. As much as I love tales of the end of the world, I admit being a bit fatigued of the premise by now, but this is a high mark of the genre.

TheNeverendingTBR Brilliant book!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 11mo

Wow, this story is quite the start to what I imagine is going to be an intense and thrillingly epic series! It is really long - I‘m not sure I would have been able to get through it as quickly as I did without listening to the audiobook - but I was never bored or annoyed by the length. I will say that it felt more like two separate books than one cohesive one, but that‘s nitpicking. Great character development and world building! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

krismlars The books are very long but so worth the time! 12mo

A good post apocalyptic story. The world building was excellent. The only thing about this is it gets a bit verbose at times and I am not a fan of the constant changing POVs. 4⭐

First book in a series to be completed in 2021. #SeriesRead2021

The first half of this vampire doorstopper was a solid 5-star read. Page-turning, edge of my seat, wait...are we in the future? Cool! It was great.

The second half was a bloated slog with too many characters, almost with the same traits, ugh, these people are impossible to remember. Who is whose sister? Wait, are these people a couple? How far into the future are we? Will I read the 2nd one? 🤷‍♀️

TheNeverendingTBR Loved this and the second book so much, what you described here was exactly how I felt about the third book though; I was completely lost on that one 🥴 1y

I feel exhausted after finishing this first one in the series. The beginning was intriguing, the middle began to lose me, and the ending pulled me back in. I enjoyed following the characters on each of their journeys but at times it got really wordy. Not sure if I‘m going to read on yet. On one hand I want to know what happens but on the other, I‘m not sure I want to tackle another massive book. October 5/20

bthegood @Chelsey_5 I read the series, enjoyed it, but all the books "heavy". 1y

Unpopular opinion. I thought this was just so-so. Maybe it was the [12-disc!] abridgment, but I‘m not sure I could‘ve lasted for an entire unabridged edition. I was originally planning to read the entire trilogy, but I don‘t think I liked it enough to want to continue. 😕

#3Books [That were RECOMMENDED to me]

1.) From Here to Eternity, my girlfriend recommended this and it was good to read something different and interesting.

2.) The Passage, an absolutely brilliant book; the first in a trilogy that was recommended when the novel came out and I was a member of a FB book club.

3.) Coldheart Canyon, one of my favourite Barker books; recommended by an old friend.

AGOT - I watched the first season and decided to read the books. I may never read the rest because he may never finish the series. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The Passage - I need to finish the trilogy so I may go back and reread this one. I didn‘t see the series.

Alias Grace - I enjoyed this one, but still need to watch the Netflix series.

#20Series20Days Day 4

Just a trilogy but each book is a big one so I‘m including Cronin‘s The Passage in my #Top20Series. Why? This is vampires done the right way—dark, violent, terrifying, & the end of the world as we know it. Plus, I have to admire an author who breaks all the rules, quite successfully I believe, in challenging conventional narrative structures. This one isn‘t for the faint of heart but I love it.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 I definitely need to read this. 1y

Disclaimer: my #Top20Series are going to be in no particular order. It was hard enough to narrow down to 20, so I won‘t be ranking them further. 😂

Day 1/20: The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin is post-apocalyptic horror that never stopped surprising me. The first book is almost like 2 books in one (in a good way), and the subsequent books are just as fresh and unique.

If I were forced to rank my #20Series20Days, this would be near the top!

Andrew65 I‘m the same, very difficult to rank them. Need to read this series. 1y
TheNeverendingTBR First two were absolutely brilliant, I didn't particularly like The City of Mirrors though; it was all over the place and too many characters that I lost track of who was who. I'll read the trilogy again though because I read them after publication so there was years between reading each installment. 1y
VeganCleopatra I've contemplated doing this but I honestly don't think I have twenty favorites...probably not even close. 🤷‍♀️ 1y

sprainedbrain @VeganCleopatra I used to read a lot more series than I have the last few years... I really prefer stand-alones these days, I had to cut down a list of 26, so clearly I‘ve got plenty that have stuck with me, some since childhood! 1y
TheNeverendingTBR @sprainedbrain I'm thinking I'd enjoy it on a re-read, there was just a huge gap between The Twelve and The City of Mirrors. I think reading them back-to-back will be the best bet. 1y

Perhaps I wouldn‘t have started reading this with Seth (12) if I‘d known a global pandemic was coming but he loves some dystopian fiction and this is one of my favourite books of all time. The cover shows I‘ve read this 3 times, and then pressed it into the hands as many people as I can. It was the first post-apocalypse fiction I ever read, it blew me away and opened up a whole new genre and now I‘ve read it with my boy. Those are the best books.

Whew this was a long book. I picked this up because I seen it was a tv show on fox and wanted to get a read on this before watching the show. It took me a long time to eat into this book. I even had to set it aside for a few months because I wasn‘t getting into it. The firs bit is interesting, then it changes time periods with a whole new set of characters, then the second half picks up and it‘s more interesting. I am tempted to read the rest of the series but would be alright if I didn‘t. Neat idea and plot, but didn‘t keep me hooked.

This book was just unnecessarily long! I lost interest halfway through, but I had already committed so much time to it. By the time I was finished, I was so bored. It was like it tried to be The Stand and failed. I liked some of the characters, but some were flat and the vampires were boring.

MidnightBookGirl Haha! I like this series, but I picked this book when it first came out for our book club, and only 1 person came. In the book's defense, it was brand new and in Hardback, so no one wanted to buy it and it was long before we became a regular crew.

Sci-fi is not my go-to genre, but I was absolutely drawn in to this book about a post-apocalyptic world after a virus is unleashed in a most unusual way. It took me some time to get into it, but I became completely enraptured by the characters, and wanted to stay up late reading - never satisfied stopping at the end of each chapter. Not my favorite book, and very long, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!
