Meet Greta Helsing, fast-talking doctor to the undead. Keeping the supernatural community not-alive and well in London has been her family's specialty for generations. Greta Helsing inherited the family's highly specialized, and highly peculiar, medical practice. In her consulting rooms, Dr. Helsing treats the undead for a host of ills - vocal strain in banshees, arthritis in barrow-wights, and entropy in mummies. Although barely making ends meet, this is just the quiet, supernatural-adjacent life Greta's been groomed for since childhood. Until a sect of murderous monks emerges, killing human and undead Londoners alike. As terror takes hold of the city, Greta must use her unusual skills to stop the cult if she hopes to save her practice, and her life.

This was an interesting supernatural book. I liked the setting and the time of the book. I felt like it was a bit dry in parts and it didn‘t stand out among other books in this genre. It was okay, but I‘ve liked other books better that had similar themes.

IndyHannaJones I loved this book, but I'm intrigued about the other books with similar themes... 1w
Victoriahoperose @IndyHannaJones I felt like A Discovery of Witches had a similar vibe. I have to look through my TBR and let you know a few others. 1w

Dr. Greta Helsing is a physician to non-human Londoners. Fun, campy thriller as Greta and her friends seek to save London's undead and human populations from zealous killer zombie monks.

I wasn‘t going to buy any more books until I reduced my stack a bit but couldn‘t resist when I saw this on the shelves and realised it was a book I had spotted on Litsy. I just had to add it to my real #tbr pile not just my Litsy list! I also wasn‘t going to have anything naughty today but somehow ended up with a hot chocolate 😬🤷‍♀️

First in what promises to be an entertaining series featuring Greta Helsing, doctor to monsters. A strange group of people dressed as monks lurk at night attacking and murdering, their focus seemingly turned against the monster community of London. Dr. Helsing is an especial target due to her work. Love the characters in this book (stronger than the plot). https://cannonballread.com/2019/05/strange-practice-a-dr-greta-helsing-novel-elc...

This book had amazing world building! The number of depth of the supernatural creatures was fantastic, as was the fact that they had normal problems as well as supernatural ones. It was also really hard to put down! The mystery kept me reading.

imyril It was a lot of fun. I didn‘t like the romance, but I enjoyed that sense of a supernatural community / ecosystem and how it can be magical and mundane at the same time. And I loved how Ruthven was everybody‘s Mom friend 😂 5mo

This was alright! I found the ending to be a little anti-climactic and a cop out. It sort of suffers from "author has idea and develops one side but doesn't totally know how to explain the other side." I also found the pacing to be a little difficult--especially when things were happening and yet it still felt like we were spinning our wheels. It had potential to be really cool but the author just didn't execute it properly.

IndoorDame That‘s too bad the cover is so fabulous I almost want to read it anyway 7mo
SassenachTheBookWizard @IndoorDame it's honestly not BAD. Just not everything I hoped. I also just read The Rook which is also a contemporary paranormal which was AMAZING so I can't help but compare it. I'm still interested in the sequel tbh 7mo

I'm spoiled after Goss, so I wish that the background female characters were a little more present than the group of The Guys and Greta.

This was still a fun, fascinating book about a doctor to the supernatural. She's brilliant and compassionate. I kind of adore her.

The world building was just enough to pique my interest, implying a much wider world than we get to see. I'm greatly looking forward to the next book. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

Dr Greta Helsing's patients are all supernatural beings, though many of them are more like friends and family. When a shadowy cult-like group begins terrorizing the underground supernatural community of modern day London, it falls to Greta and those friends to put a stop to it.

This book was a little slow to start, but by about 30% of the way in I was totally hooked. I'm definitely going to read the sequel.

Reread this so I'm fresh for the sequel. It's a lot of fun: I adore what Shaw does with Ruthven and Varney, and all the little ailments Greta has to trearmt the supernatural community for. Not sure what the next book will be about, but I'm keen.

Dr Greta Helsing has inherited the family practice. When some murderous monks try to kill her #monstrous patients (vampires, mummies etc.) she has to stop them.

Love the premise—Dr. Greta Helsing, doctor to the undead. The plotting was good but a little laggy (as my son would say) in places—the undead & living citizens of London are being terrorized by a group of fanatical monks (who are listening to voices in their heads even though that‘s usually not a good thing). Execution was as expected in a debut—flashes of great stuff, room for improvement. Fantastic Will Staehle cover. On balance, I enjoyed it.

Super fun read for those of us steeped in vampire tropes. Giving new life to Varney and Ruthven and reimagining the Van Helsing was exceedingly brilliant. Some frustration with verisimilitude. Truly am enjoying the alternative universe being created and look forward to the second book.
