Here there be dragons...and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all...).

The first of the City Watch books follows Captain Vimes, Constable Carrot, several dragons, a noblewoman, a secret society, Discworld‘s Librarian, and the Patrician as they attempt to save Ankh-Morpork with varying degrees of success. It‘s a fun romp and I‘m glad I finally got to this #Discworld series, especially with the TV adaptation coming soon.

jillrhudy It had better be brilliant! I want something to really do it justice 1d

I am only halfway through this book, but I am already prepared to Have Opinions in this Night Watch adaptation.

But. I will be good and save them for when I‘m done with the books and have seen the show 🙃

“There is something very unexpected about this sword. It isn‘t magical. It hasn‘t got a name. When you wield it you don‘t get a feeling of power, you just get blisters; you could believe it was a sword that had been used so much that it had ceased to be anything other than a quintessential sword, a long piece of #metal with very sharp edges. And it hasn‘t got destiny written all over it. It‘s practically unique, in fact.” #QuotsyNov19

I loved it. Quick and easy read with bits and pieces woven in from his overall vision of Discworld. So far my favorite of his books I've read so far. Hilarious if you get into his tongue in cheek sense of humor.

I finally got my hubby to start reading #Discworld! So far he‘s read the first two City Watch books, the first Witches book & he‘s about halfway through Wyrd Sisters. He‘s enjoying the books so much I decided to start rereading! I‘m not sure yet if I‘ll reread all the Watch books first, or bounce around between the different threads, or maybe reread in the same order as my husband reads them. At any rate, I‘m looking forward to an #epicreread!

KathyWheeler I have put off reading these because I have no idea what order to read them in or where to start. 5mo
TK-421 @KathyWheeler I found this reading order guide helpful: http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-gui.... It doesn‘t include some of the later novels but it‘s a great introduction. I‘d recommend the "starter novels" from any one of the Discworld threads, except Rincewind (continued ?) 5mo
TK-421 Pratchett himself said, “I find it now rather embarrassing that people beginning the Discworld series start with The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic, which I don‘t think are some of the best books to start with. This is the author saying this, folks. Do not start at the beginning with Discworld.” I started with the first couple of City Watch & Witches books. 5mo
KathyWheeler @TK-421 thanks! 5mo

I‘m a bit behind the #OokBOokClub here, but I have to say I can definitely see Pratchett‘s wit and wisdom, the thing that made me fall in love with the later Discworld books, really starting to shine through with this installment. It starts out as a silly story, that quickly takes some unexpected twists, delightfully peppered with some great lines that still ring true today.

#PratchettPosse.... only 2 weeks late.🤷‍♀️

sixgun I just read that Hay, Wales, location of the annual Hay festival, a population of just 1500 still retains 20+ book shops. They had 50+ a decade ago. I love second hand, individually owned, book shops. I've always wanted to own one. 12mo

sixgun @Texreader Ohhhh Noooo!! That is beyond painful. I think I'd cry. The book that I learned about the Hay festival had a linguist that can hear the difference in accent withing about 5 miles. That is also crazy. 12mo

I carry the Watch with me everywhere on my keys, so it's almost inevitable that their introduction would be a pick. I like how the importance of narrative is becoming more of a physical or natural truth, or at least an factor that you have to consider. I also really like that Vimes both pushes back against and embraces that notion. Also he's way more flusterable at this early stage than I remembered and it is delightful.
#OokBOokClub

Soubhiville I loved Guards! Guards! Carrot is hilarious, I love how literal he is and his naivety when he first arrives! I love how the other guards view him, and Vimes especially. And Errol! Don‘t you just want to squeeze him? But not hard so he doesn‘t explode 🤣. I‘ve seen bunches of illustrations of the guards, but I‘ve yet to see a drawing of Nobby that is strange and inhuman enough for my mind‘s eye. 12mo
Soubhiville In rereading Discworld starting last January, I have found that my favorite storyline has shifted from Death more towards the watch books. These characters are just so much fun! 12mo
julesG @Soubhiville Some habits of the watch reminded me of the witchfinder sergeant Shadwell of Good Omens - which is our next read. E.g. Nobby's dogends, Vimes and women, Carrot and Newton,... 12mo
Soubhiville @julesG oh Good Omens is next?! I haven‘t read that in years! Fun! I‘ll look for those similarities. I‘ve been reading 1-3 Discworld books a month, I‘m on Feet of Clay now, so GG isn‘t fresh in my mind. 12mo
julesG Loved the librarian and the library. Ook! 12mo
julesG @Soubhiville Yes, Good Omens is next. Will announce it tomorrow. 12mo
Aimeesue Lady Sybil! ❤️❤️❤️ I adore her. 12mo
julesG @Aimeesue Yes! Lady Sybil is great. 12mo
Gezemice @Soubhiville I love the Watch storyline, and especially Carrot, with his unerring optimism. And Lady Sybil, too, with her love for exploding dragons... 12mo
khooliha Very grumpy with myself for not having gotten around to Guards, Guards! yet because I (like everyone) love the watch. I want to spend more time with Vimes ASAP! 12mo
dariazeoli I liked this one - lots to laugh at! Errol was great, and Carrot‘s letters home 😁 12mo
julesG @dariazeoli Carrot is such a sweet and innocent soul. 12mo
julesG @khooliha You can still catch up. The audiobook takes about 6 hours on normal speed. 12mo
Moray_Reads I love Vetinari, so cynical, so cunning, so wise. And Vimes definitely had the best character arc over the course of his books 12mo
Laura317 This is probably one of my favorite Discworld books. As I‘ve mentioned, I have a bit of a crush on Vimes. I can completely see why Lady Sybil Ramkin falls for him. Their courtship (?) cracks me up. Errol is adorable. All the crazy things he‘d eat! I want a swamp dragon. 12mo
Laura317 @julesG Love the librarian (an ape NOT a monkey). Ok! 12mo
Laura317 @Soubhiville I try to picture Nobby, and all I see is some type of deformed, elvish looking thing. With a love for plumes and frogs and whatnot. 12mo
Laura317 @dariazeoli “Tell Minty I said hello!” Poor Carrot. 12mo
Laura317 @Moray_Reads Is Vetinari some sort of undead? He‘s so unnatural. 12mo
Gezemice @Laura317 Oh no, I love Vetinari. He just knows how people work. 12mo
Gezemice @Moray_Reads Yes, I think Vimes is somewhat autobiographical, although I cannot be sure. He is the only character that is complex - all characters are fun, but they do tend to be one-sided, except for Vimes. And I love every scene with Vetinari. “one man, one vote” 12mo
Laura317 @Gezemice Oh, I like Vetinari. I just can‘t quite puzzle him out. By unnatural, I mean not quite human. Something else. I like his dungeon with his little rat minions. Never build a dungeon you wouldn‘t want to stay in yourself. 😂 12mo
Gezemice @Laura317 Oh, definitely not average, lol. 12mo
Gezemice @gossamerchild I meant that I think Vimes is closest to Pratchett, not Vetinari. Vetinari is a very fun character but not exactly a complex character. 12mo
gossamerchild @Gezemice oh, ha, that makes sense 🙄😁 12mo
khooliha And I have caught up! I love most of this book (I more... tolerate Nobby and Colon), but even with loving it I had somehow forgot that a dragon gets arrested! I had forgotten Vetinari's speech at the end too, and I'm looking forward to seeing if that attitude bears out (in my memory of him it does not). 12mo
khooliha I like how the book draws parallels between Vimes and Carrot in their small moments of kindness. They almost couldn't be more different people, but tiny things let you know that they have that same animating force of good. But anyway, please let Carrot be a real adult man in the next book, my brain cannot handle him being 16. 12mo
julesG @khooliha 👏👏👏 Yes, to Carrot growing up. Glad you caught up. Very insightful comments about the book. 12mo
khooliha @julesG Thank you! I've carried most of these books around in my head since I was a teen and I'm very happy for this reread giving me the space to think about them more than I did before. 12mo
julesG @khooliha It's the same with me. I read Pratchett ages ago and I see different things in the books now than I did in my teens. 12mo
Gezemice @khooliha I just finished re-reading, and it is funny that the only part of the story I remembered that a dragon gets arrested... I did remember the characters though and the swamp dragons, but not Errol. And Carrot never acts like he is 16 anyway, lol. 12mo
Gezemice @julesG Same here, I read it some years ago, although for some reason I ended up reading it after I read the rest of the Watch books. And apparently I did not like it somuch, according to my Goodreads review. All I can think that something wrong was with my head, because I loved it this time. 12mo
khooliha @Gezemice I'm glad PTerry didn't write Carrot the same way he'd written teens up to Guards, Guards. Carrot's just a weird old young man, I guess! 12mo

Iblu Yay! Nearly caught up! This is my preferred time of year, loads of knitting snuggled up on the sofa with entertaining audiobooks 13mo
julesG @Iblu That sounds cozy. I'm very similar. I love #audioknitting. 13mo
Iblu @julesG ah-a!!! Didn‘t know the right hashtag! I was pretty sure there were multitasking knitters out there!!! And I have a cat also 😻 (edited) 13mo
julesG @Iblu Just knitting is boring. I love audiobooks or wonderful films to knit to. Do your cats also like to chew your yarn? 13mo
Iblu @julesG sure!!! Although tonight she was rather going bonkers with a mouse toy... luckily for my cowl!!! 13mo

I loved this one! Another Discworld book. This time it was about the watch. Again there were some amazing characters and storyline.
Oh they just keep getting better and better! I really recommend the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett!
