Isabel is a single, twentysomething thrift-store shopper and collector of remnants, things cast off or left behind by others. Glaciers follows Isabel through a day in her life in which work with damaged books in the basement of a library, unrequited love for the former soldier who fixes her computer, and dreams of the perfect vintage dress move over a backdrop of deteriorating urban architecture and the imminent loss of the glaciers she knew as a young girl in Alaska.Glaciers unfolds internally, the action shaped by Isabels sense of history, memory, and place, recalling the work of writers such as Jean Rhys, Marguerite Duras, and Virginia Woolf. For Isabel, the fleeting moments of one day can reveal an entire life. While she contemplates loss and the intricate fissures it creates in our lives, she accumulates the storiesthe remnantsof those around her and she begins to tell her own story.

One young woman in the Pacific Northwest is fascinated by old photos and vintage items. This little novella gives us a glimpse into the reasons behind her obsession. Her path crosses with a coworker and former soldier, and they have a sweet connection. Brief but beautiful. The scene where everyone at a party has to tell a personal story was particularly memorable.

A short, beautifully written, understated book. A quiet story grounded in the weight of real life. No fancy twists and turns, no technology. Just a young woman‘s yearning.

I needed a new audiobook and this choice was cover love (and I had seen a post on Litsy 😉) It seemed perfect for me, and it was a short one! (Still trying to increase those end of the year numbers! )A young woman who loves vintage and works in a Library is looking for love. Settings:Alaska and Seattle. Well written. Just too melancholy for me right now.

Librariana I believe this one is also on my TBR. Good to know that it's more of a melancholy type read. 1y
DivineDiana @Librariana I thought it was going to be more upbeat! 1y

I‘m not really sure about this one. It just didn‘t flow for me and I found it pretty confusing. The setting was definitely a main piece of this one but I just didn‘t fully feel satisfied in the end. I felt like I was missing something. Beautiful writing, but I just felt like this wasn‘t very story driven and I had a hard time starting interested in this one.

This is a moving though quiet novella, a book to read for it‘s beautiful writing & subtlety. Isabella was a quiet thoughtful child now grown into a woman who mends books in a library & scours thrift shops for treasures. The short scenes feel as if her breath is held, there is a beautiful tension as she sorts through her thoughts and memories with new possibilities on the horizon. A tender and thoughtful short read 💜💛

It could be because I‘m the exact audience for this short audiobook, but I adored it. Isabella lived in Alaska as a child and has a fondness for glaciers and desperately worries about their disappearance. She relocates to the Portland where the present day action takes place. Isabella is basically me: lover of thrift stores, vegetarian, works in a library, concerned about the changing world, loves books, old things and cats. A rec from @Liberty

I loved this sweet and surprising novel recommended to me by @Amandajoy for @monalyisha's #newyearwhodis

The characters felt fully realized for such a short book and I loved the descriptions of late 80s/early 90s Alaskan childhood. I grew up in roughly the same era in a neighboring Alaskan community so some of the points really resonated: work on the slope, walking up to exit glacier and fashion/trends taking 5 years to reach Alaska (if ever 😂)

Amandajoy So glad you enjoyed it! I thought it was such a simple, lovely little book! 4y

#TbrBacklist #LibertyRecommended @Liberty I finished this short debut novel this morning and loved falling into its atmosphere- perfect for a Sunday morning. When I went to Goodreads boy I saw some acerbic reviews- mainly about Portland stereotypes- frankly the fact the some of the story occurs in Portland was fairly irrelevant in my mind. Has anyone else found Goodreads reviews to be increasingly overly meanspirited? I enjoyed this read👍👍👍👍

Redwritinghood Agree about GoodReads - some people really go off in their reviews. Overall, though, most are fair. 6y
Booksnchill @Redwritinghood Perhaps I am just reading the books that divide? I didn‘t understand the anger about this one though🧐 6y
Redwritinghood @Booksnchill I haven‘t read this book, so hard to say. I know there are some pretty snarking reviews on there, though. 6y

BookMaven407 That's great that you have it. You'll have to post another pic after it is decorated for Christmas 🎄 6y
GondorGirl I don't look at reviews on Good Reads anymore. People are mean, overly judgemental, and are constantly reviewing books they haven't read (or aren't even out yet). I stick to Litsy for my reviews when I can. People here are much more thoughtful, even when they dislike a book 6y
winemom Yes! I can think of one popular Goodreader in particular who always leaves the most scathing reviews. It‘s like, do you even like reading? lol Also, inner six-year-old me is fawning over that dollhouse. 6y
Oryx I avoid Goodreads for that reason. Perfect Litsy for reviews now. 6y
Zelma I stopped reviewing on GR this year. I only keep my books on there for the stats at this point. 6y
Booksnchill @winemom it is old and very homemade but I love it! I agree with you on the reviews- I did wonder why they were bothering to review at all! 6y
Booksnchill @Oryx agreed but too bad! 6y
Booksnchill @Zelma I don‘t review there either but when I tag something as finished and they send me the “what next” email I do look at the reviews- I may have to stop doing that as I just want to reply to them that the tenor of the review is unnecessary but I restrain myself! (edited) 6y
Booksnchill @GondorGirl yes litsy is much better I have found- lots of love and acceptance in this group! 6y
Booksnchill @winemom did you get my bookmarkswap email? I don‘t have one from you yet 6y
winemom I haven‘t checked my mail yet! Insane week. 😩 But I will now! 6y
batsy I still look at GR reviews but take it with a grain of salt. When browsing you get a mixed bag; some really good, engaged ones and others less so. But increasingly I find myself "arguing" with the GR average star rating for any given book ? 6y
Booksnchill @batsy I agree! 6y

Just because a book is small doesn't mean it won't give you all the feels.

The reader is shown a brief but beautiful day in the life of protagonist Isabel, a woman in her late 20's who loves vintage items and works in a local library as the librarian of damaged books. She secretly pines for a coworker nicknamed Spokes, but is not sure how to act on it. Through the course of the novel, we share in her memories, hopes and dreams, joy, and tragedy.

What a delightful surprise! The blurbs on the back describe this author's prose as clear and piercing and I think that fits perfectly. If I had that kind of life, I would have read it in one sitting, but I still finished it in just over a day and was left with a heart that was both aching and hopeful. P.s.
