Isabel is a single, twentysomething thrift-store shopper and collector of remnants, things cast off or left behind by others. Glaciers follows Isabel through a day in her life in which work with damaged books in the basement of a library, unrequited love for the former soldier who fixes her computer, and dreams of the perfect vintage dress move over a backdrop of deteriorating urban architecture and the imminent loss of the glaciers she knew as a young girl in Alaska.Glaciers unfolds internally, the action shaped by Isabels sense of history, memory, and place, recalling the work of writers such as Jean Rhys, Marguerite Duras, and Virginia Woolf. For Isabel, the fleeting moments of one day can reveal an entire life. While she contemplates loss and the intricate fissures it creates in our lives, she accumulates the storiesthe remnantsof those around her and she begins to tell her own story.

I loved this sweet and surprising novel recommended to me by @Amandajoy for @monalyisha's #newyearwhodis

The characters felt fully realized for such a short book and I loved the descriptions of late 80s/early 90s Alaskan childhood. I grew up in roughly the same era in a neighboring Alaskan community so some of the points really resonated: work on the slope, walking up to exit glacier and fashion/trends taking 5 years to reach Alaska (if ever 😂)

Amandajoy So glad you enjoyed it! I thought it was such a simple, lovely little book! 4d

Loved this! 5⭐ Not sure how to describe the plotless story so I'll steal the description from goodreads. 😉

@LeslieO Thank you for a wonderful #summersantagoespostal package. I love everything! 😄 I'm looking forward to reading all the books, it's funny Glaciers was on my TBR but the other two were more on my radar. They all look great. The memo pads are cute and notebook is too chic for me but I'll use it anyway. 😉 Thanks again for making a great start to my day and weekend.

@BookishMarginalia Thanks for hosting! 👍🙂

The kids are asleep. The almost husband is at work. The house is quiet and there‘s the sound of rain outside. Now I get to settle into bed with this lovely book. Maybe I can keep my eyes open long enough to finish. I‘m really loving the writing in this, just gorgeous.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @julesG Hahaha! I thought of Veronica Mars and thought, I actually like how they‘ve evolved Logan‘s character. 😂. So yea, sorry Rory, your Logan is totally beneath you. 1y

This fits my little girl to a T! Ever since she could pull herself up to standing, she would pull our books down and flip through them. She will still run off to the ball pit if she gets ahold of one and lay in the pit with the book over her face.

Rules for my personal challenge. I have to read *at least* 10 of the 18 bks listed to complete the challenge. Beyond that, I will reward myself with small prizes if I complete 75% (14 bks), 89% (16 bks), and 95% (17 bks). If I read all 18 bks by December 31st, I earn a special prize. I just have to come up with something good. Suggestions? Also, I'll not buy any books, except maybe the one tagged.

#TbrBacklist #LibertyRecommended @Liberty I finished this short debut novel this morning and loved falling into its atmosphere- perfect for a Sunday morning. When I went to Goodreads boy I saw some acerbic reviews- mainly about Portland stereotypes- frankly the fact the some of the story occurs in Portland was fairly irrelevant in my mind. Has anyone else found Goodreads reviews to be increasingly overly meanspirited? I enjoyed this read👍👍👍👍

Redwritinghood Agree about GoodReads - some people really go off in their reviews. Overall, though, most are fair. 2y
Booksnchill @Redwritinghood Perhaps I am just reading the books that divide? I didn‘t understand the anger about this one though🧐 2y
Redwritinghood @Booksnchill I haven‘t read this book, so hard to say. I know there are some pretty snarking reviews on there, though. 2y

Booksnchill @BookMaven407 that is my mom‘s old doll house I keep out in my sunroom- I‘ll decorate it for Christmas soon- seemed right for the vintage theme of this book! 2y
BookMaven407 That's great that you have it. You'll have to post another pic after it is decorated for Christmas 🎄 2y
GondorGirl I don't look at reviews on Good Reads anymore. People are mean, overly judgemental, and are constantly reviewing books they haven't read (or aren't even out yet). I stick to Litsy for my reviews when I can. People here are much more thoughtful, even when they dislike a book 2y
winemom Yes! I can think of one popular Goodreader in particular who always leaves the most scathing reviews. It‘s like, do you even like reading? lol Also, inner six-year-old me is fawning over that dollhouse. 2y
Oryx I avoid Goodreads for that reason. Perfect Litsy for reviews now. 2y
Zelma I stopped reviewing on GR this year. I only keep my books on there for the stats at this point. 2y
Booksnchill @winemom it is old and very homemade but I love it! I agree with you on the reviews- I did wonder why they were bothering to review at all! 2y
Booksnchill @Oryx agreed but too bad! 2y
Booksnchill @Zelma I don‘t review there either but when I tag something as finished and they send me the “what next” email I do look at the reviews- I may have to stop doing that as I just want to reply to them that the tenor of the review is unnecessary but I restrain myself! (edited) 2y
Booksnchill @GondorGirl yes litsy is much better I have found- lots of love and acceptance in this group! 2y
Booksnchill @winemom did you get my bookmarkswap email? I don‘t have one from you yet 2y
winemom I haven‘t checked my mail yet! Insane week. 😩 But I will now! 2y
batsy I still look at GR reviews but take it with a grain of salt. When browsing you get a mixed bag; some really good, engaged ones and others less so. But increasingly I find myself "arguing" with the GR average star rating for any given book ? 2y
Booksnchill @batsy I agree! 2y

Just because a book is small doesn't mean it won't give you all the feels.

The reader is shown a brief but beautiful day in the life of protagonist Isabel, a woman in her late 20's who loves vintage items and works in a local library as the librarian of damaged books. She secretly pines for a coworker nicknamed Spokes, but is not sure how to act on it. Through the course of the novel, we share in her memories, hopes and dreams, joy, and tragedy.

What a delightful surprise! The blurbs on the back describe this author's prose as clear and piercing and I think that fits perfectly. If I had that kind of life, I would have read it in one sitting, but I still finished it in just over a day and was left with a heart that was both aching and hopeful. P.s. I'm starting my 4th #24in48 read of the weekend. I'm pretty sure I've never read 4 books in one weekend before. To celebrate, I'm giving away the 10 bookmarks in the picture. For a chance to win, post a picture of your #24in48 bookmark and be sure to tag me. I'll keep a list and will randomly select winners at 6pm tonight so that I can get them in the mail to the lucky winners tomorrow. Good luck!
