The Enchanted April
The Enchanted April | Elisabeth Von Arnim
Australian-born novelist, born Mary Annette Beauchamp. By marriage she became Grfin (Countess) von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and by a second marriage, Countess Russell. Although known in her early life as Mary, after the publication of her first book, she was known to her readers, eventually to her friends, and finally even to her family as Elizabeth, and she is now invariably referred to as Elizabeth von Arnim. She also wrote under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley. Arnim would later refer to her domineering first husband as the "Man of Wrath" and writing became her refuge from what turned out to be an incompatible marriage. Arnim's husband had increasing debts and was eventually sent to prison for fraud. This was when she created her pen name "Elizabeth" and launched her career as a writer by publishing her semi-autobiographical, brooding, yet satirical Elizabeth and her German Garden (1898). Detailing her struggles both to create a garden on the estate and her attempts to integrate into German high-class Junker society, it was such a success that it was reprinted twenty times in its first year. A bitter-sweet memoir and companion to it was The Solitary Summer (1899). Other works, such as the The Benefactress (1902), Vera (1921), and Love (1925), were also semi-autobiographical. Other titles dealing with feminist protest and witty observations of life in provincial Germany were to follow, including The Princess Priscilla's Fortnight (1905) and Fraulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther (1907). Although she never wrote a traditional autobiography, All the Dogs of My Life, her 1936 account of her love for her pets, contains many glimpses of the glittering social circle of which she was part.

In this novel from #1922 , 4 women embark on a monthlong stay in Italy. Von Arnim‘s description of the Italian villa the ladies stay at feels warm and friendly and almost magical. The ladies, in turn, find themselves during the month. Very character-driven, and it‘s wonderful to watch the growth of the characters as the novel progresses. The audio version I listened to was very good! #192025 #52BookClub24 #ACharacterDrivenNovel

I was hoping, with so much discussion of the meals in this book, there would be some good Italian food descriptions. But, since there weren‘t, I made a Shrimp Portofino based on the location. This was actually my dinner last Sunday (when I planned to finish this book), but didn‘t finish until yesterday. #CookingTheBooks #BookAndDinner

I had been so god this year and during the year‘s first four months only bought 6 books. Then May came and I bought 8 books.

The good thing is that I have already read 3; the 2 Manga and Black Butterflies.

I hope to get to several of these in June.

And A Glass of Blessings is for a buddy read in November #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade. I bought it early since I was buying from an online bookstore I usually don‘t buy from.

Another breakfast with THE ENCHANTED APRIL—which, I‘m sorry to say, hasn‘t grabbed me the way I wanted it to. Everyone‘s comments made it sound charming, but so far I‘m more frustrated than anything else. While I recognize that von Arnim means it to be a productive and/or humorous frustration, it‘s still kept me at a distance from the characters. Sadness.

BkClubCare I‘m sorry you are sad 😔 2y

Hilarious story. I really enjoyed the interaction of these four women while they stay in an Italian castle for a month. Different personalities and backgrounds, different motives to stay at the castle. I liked the sarcasm tone of those dialogues, absurd situations. Even the author‘s life was peculiar. This edition has an introduction part. Better to read it after the novel. 3.5/3.8⭐️ #BookSpinBingo May 2022 #DoubleSpin @TheAromaOfBooks

mabell This sounds fun! 2y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I frequently feel like introductions should be afterwords and vice versa. I read a nonfiction book lately and then the afterword was the author explaining how she was actually connected to the real-life people in the book... like that would have been extremely helpful/interesting at the beginning?? And then sometimes I read an introduction that literally tells the whole story of the book! Why?? 2y

I had my doubts about this classic (published in 1922) going in to #SundayBuddyRead but it turned out to be a lovely surprise that although 100 years old & about 4 women in 1920‘s England, still has relevance today. Charming, humorous & with scenery descriptions stirring enough to make me want to drop everything & head to Italy, it was an enjoyable & perfect for April. I watched the 1991 move last night after finishing & really enjoyed it too. ⬇️

Well. We did it! An old classic novel! I have to say it was better than I anticipated- the descriptions of their surroundings was the best part for me. I did find the relationships interesting and it was fun to see what happened to them all, 100 years ago. Just wow.

Thank you for traveling with me in April to the enchanted April! I had fun! And I still don‘t like Melleresh 🤣 and I want to know the food bill!
Final thoughts?

Karisa I still don‘t like Mellersh either. So pompous. A whole month in such a place would be amazing! I enjoyed this one too and kind of want to look back at the flowers mentioned for their symbolism (I saw acacia at the end means immortal soul). Hope your people are feeling better soon, @TheBookHippie 💗 2y
AmyG I don‘t really like either of the husbands. @TheBookHippie @Karisa 2y

TheBookHippie @AmyG No, me either. 😝 2y
vlwelser The descriptions of the setting really sold this one for me. 2y
DebinHawaii I enjoyed this a lot except for the endings for some. I do wonder about that food bill. TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii ♥️♥️♥️ I‘m with you the movie ending seemed better. 2y

Think they all stayed friends? Returned to the house? Who was really healed or changed or found their joy?

Is this book a romance ?
Can you see this as a play or a comedy?

AmyG I thought, towards the end, that they will all go back to their old lives....and wondered if the change they experienced will last. Who knows? None of them are very good at communication. 2y
Karisa I can see this as a play. There‘s the first big scene change, but after that it is mostly house/garden. It‘d make a great play! Like @AmyG I wonder if their transformation will last too. Somehow, I see the Arbuthnots staying changed since her change was mostly about accepting her husband‘s job. Gosh, now I‘m remembering that he followed Caroline there—ew! (edited) 2y
vlwelser Maybe it is a comedy. I'm tempted to watch the movie. 2y
See All 6 Comments
DebinHawaii It‘s hard to know if they can sustain all pelt some of the changes. I hope the women will remain friends & at least some of the changes take hold back in their daily lives. Is the setting and the house the main character you think? The necessity of beauty in everyday life and love, do we forget that sometimes?

Beauty made you love and love made you beautiful … is this the story summed up?

AmyG The flowers! The beautiful descriptions. It seemed as if they breathed love and beauty into the lives of these people. Yes, I felt the power of the house, the location. 2y
Karisa Yes, San Salvatore seemed key. Would it have even been the same in a different season? Enjoy the beauty in the moment, I guess. How many don‘t have a chance for such escape or could they have had it by appreciating their real lives more too? 2y
vlwelser @AmyG 💯 2y
DebinHawaii Maybe not the main character, but one of them or a least strong supporting character. I think it did a lot for their psyches but could just getting away anywhere have done it? Maybe but not as fast or as well. It was so totally opposite from their daily lives & environment in England—so open, colorful & alive as opposed to being colorless, closed up & dreary, it showed them what the possibilities were. 2y

Lotty. She who changes first and seems at peace but is it what needs to be so she can live with Mellerish?
Is her inner joy what was fixed?

AmyG I‘d be curious if any of them were “fixed”. They are going back to England. I wonder how they do when back home. 2y
Karisa @AmyG Exactly! Once back in the rainy real-world, what happens to them? Do they all just need to move to Italy? 😂 2y
vlwelser It seems like there was nothing wrong with this character anyway. Except maybe her husband not appreciating her. 2y
DebinHawaii If anyone can sustain on the “outside” of the villa & Italy, it will be Lotty. I felt like she is able to more readily express her visions & tell her truths. Not confident her husband will continue to appreciate her—sadly maybe if her friendships with Lady C & Mrs.Fisher sustain. And again with his “endearing” ear pinching…what is that?! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
peanutnine I was doubtful going in, but I think she can sustain a happy relationship with Mellersh now that she is confident in herself. It seems like he didn't respect her before but now sees that she is capable and can appreciate her more when she doesn't back down 2y

Scrap/Lady Caroline had come to get away from love. Think she ends up with Briggs?

Isn‘t love what she has in her deep new friendship with Lotty?

AmyG I think she loves tnat Lotty tells it like it is and doesn‘t know her as Lady C. The book alluded to her giving Mr Briggs a chance. 2y
Karisa I think Caroline fell in love with the place. Since Briggs owns San Salvatore, he‘s given a chance (even though he was the ultimate “grabber”). I wonder with that type of guy if he‘d drop her for the next pretty woman that wanders in his path though? He‘s so flighty. 2y
vlwelser I'm going to play this one out in my head as if she tells him off and goes on to do whatever the heck she wants. 2y

What do you think? Are they healed? Are they truly in love? More so than Lotty and Mellerish? Did she escape into her religion and he just let her and became his alter ego and now that‘ll end?
Rose - think she will go back to the church ?

AmyG I can only say...you have to communicate. They didn‘t as a couple. They each thought things about thhe other that were not true. Taking them out of England, I guess, let them see each other differently. 2y
vlwelser This also seemed a little icky to me. And I felt bad for Mrs. A. But I guess if he can get his head out of his rear and they actually talk to each other it might work out. 2y

Mrs Fisher can be nice. Who knew?!
How very shocking.
We didn‘t gain too much knowledge of her, and she did seem to soften a bit, do you think she changed the least or that was all she could manage?

AmyG She seemed to change when she got some attention, when she felt appreciated. Reminds me of what my Mom always said...”you attract more bees with honey”. 2y

Telegram-for Rose from MR BRIGGS
WHO “fancies” ROSE?!
Well then.
Then he sees his ideal of absolute loveliness Lady Caroline…
And the struggle of Caroline seeing him as a grabber? For her outward beauty he is drawn. Which seems opposite of the whole story the inward making the outward beautiful. Why do you think that is?

AmyG Men are men...no matter where they are. But I got the sense, at the end, that just maybe Lady C might give him a chance? 2y
Karisa That twist was a bit disheartening to me. It did feel so different than the rest of the message. The men are all disappointing in the book 😂 I watched the movie after finishing the book last week too. It was interesting how they solved the Briggs inconsistency 2y
Karisa @AmyG It did seem like Caroline was giving in to Briggs. I couldn‘t tell if it was that she was so in love with the place, she‘d give him a chance. The book left it vague and I kind of liked that 2y
See All 11 Comments
AmyG @Karisa I like the uncertainty, too. It did seem like there was the possibility of her giving him a chance....which for her, is a big change. 2y
vlwelser I was rather disappointed by this character. I mean obviously Mrs. A is already taken and that would have been complicated but still... 2y
DebinHawaii This bummed me out a bit in the book ending —I felt like Lady Caroline maybe giving him a chance was slapped on for the ending unless he snapped out of the “grasping.” @Karisa I watched the movie last night after finishing & how they dealt with Briggs felt better to me than the book. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Karisa @DebinHawaii I agree. I thought the movie ending for Briggs/Caroline was clever and helped her with her problem well. It kinda fit his character too. I imagined him much older in the book for some reason. I wonder how they‘d remake it today? 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa I‘d love to see a remake! 2y
Karisa @TheBookHippie They need to consult us on casting. 😂 I read this article but am not 100% sure on her picks: https://teaandinksociety.com/enchanted-april-movie-remake/ 2y

peanutnine I was also disappointed in Briggs' character. Like, I get that he thought Lady C was beautiful but I wished he could have acted normal and got to know her for her personality. Then her maybe giving him a chance would have felt more satisfying I think 2y

#BookReport Still avoiding books that might queue the water works which all 4 books accomplished. Loved The Enchanted April. I would like to make this story real and set myself in Italy for a month. The other three were all enjoyable but nothing that will stick with me.

#WeeklyForecast Fortunate Ones is for #LMPBC. I‘m about 25% and am not yet connecting with the story yet. Probably me and not the book. Barely started the other two.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely loved this month‘s #sundaybuddyread ! The humor was written so very well! The thoughts and struggles of each of the women were so real and honest and still relevant today 100 years this book was written. The descriptions of the Riviera were so vivid and enticing it made me feel like I was there even though it‘s been cold all month where I live lol. Excellent read and I hope to read more by Von Arnim soon.

AmyG I am looking forward to finishing! 2y

Now we get to finish it! A lot needs to be “solved” in this last bit. Here‘s a pic of a table in Italy .. I‘m imagining we are here for next Sunday!

I appreciate you all reading along with me for this one! A hundred years ago. More things similar than not! Such a fun April read for me. I hope you are enjoying it as well.

sprainedbrain My hold *finally* came in and I‘m burning through the book… sorry I‘ve missed all of the conversation so far. 2y
TheBookHippie @sprainedbrain no problem we‘ve all had that happen!!! Join in when you can! I hope you like it. I was stuck at first but then it flowed. 2y
Karisa What a table! The lemons above even! I‘m enjoying it too. Just imagining being there is great. I‘d wander into the town, eat so many desserts, walk to the ocean, read in the garden, snap pictures of the flowers. . . 😂 2y

sprainedbrain This sort of book is very often my jam. I‘m loving it so far. I‘m on chapter 9 already! 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa I so agree! 2y
TheBookHippie @sprainedbrain I‘m in love with it now and going to look see what else she wrote! 🤣♥️ 2y
AmyG Beautiful table! I am enjoying this book so much. Flying through the sections. I am so happy we get to finish and I hope things are tied up a little….Mr and Mrs W, Mrs A, Lady C. Do they go home changed? Or does this little trip change nothing. 2y
vlwelser I'm looking forward to the ending. This was a great pick. Even if it's a bit out of the norm from what normally ends up on the list. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser it‘s so much better than I anticipated. I wasn‘t too sure what I was getting us into 😅. 2y
TheBookHippie @sprainedbrain generally classic literature is my jam it‘s probably 90 percent of my reading. ♥️ 2y
vlwelser Lol. I'm pretty sure that's true of most books. Except maybe our favorite authors, like Simone. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser Ha. 💯True story. Most of the time our books are out of my norm. Plus I don‘t read reviews 🤣 however ever discussion has been stellar and we‘ve found favorites ! Like Simone! And now our Violent ends etc. 🎉 2y
vlwelser Still so glad you found Chloe Gong. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser Me too!! WHO KNEW?! So glad we get to continue with her for at least 2 more books! 2y
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie This is a perfect pick! I can‘t wait to see how it ends & I‘ll be sad to leave it even as much as I am looking forward to next month. 🤗 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I am going miss it. I imagine this will be a reread for me someday. I so look forward to the movie! 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I am going miss it. I imagine this will be a reread for me someday. I so look forward to the movie! 2y
mollyrotondo Loving this one so much! My goal is to finish it today! I love a classic read! And you are right it‘s been 100 years and not much has changed. Definitely will watch the movie this week! And I wish we could all gather around that table for our final discussion!! Thank you! 💜 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'd love to dine with all of you and this lemon-dressed table. I think imagining I'm at the villa is more exciting than the actual book. A few good chapters but I'm a rare one here getting underwhelmed by the book. 2y

To be as happy as all that on so little …

Lotty effortlessly simply happy

Always being there was the essential secret for a wife…
Um.
WHAT?!

THE BATH!
They were aquatinted with Mr Wilkinson legs 🤣

The bill!!! We knew it‘d be BIG! Mr. Wilkins solves the housekeeping problem…
Thoughts?

Lady Caroline‘s handling of Mr Wilkinson..

So many little events that caused much thought!

Thoughts on any of this?

Karisa I was a little irritated that they needed him to solve that. It was like “duh” come on ladies. 😂 All that stuff with the bath was too funny! They must‘ve left that in the movie. Too great of visuals not too with the servants so attentive and the bath exploding 😂 Strange that the proper Mrs. Fisher was so ok with him after that intro. I think his handsomeness worked to his advantage there. 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I can‘t wait to watch the movie! 2y
AmyG The bath was some comic relief! He‘s a lawyer and jnows how to charm potential clents. 2y
See All 10 Comments
vlwelser The bath was pretty slapstick. 2y
vlwelser Also the housekeeping bill. What stood out to me is that Mrs F thinks about inviting her fake friend to come sort things out because she can't be bothered. 2y
DebinHawaii The bath scene was hilarious in the book. I don‘t remember that much about the movie but saw it decades ago so I am really looking forward to watching it now. 2y
DebinHawaii The housekeeping bill & him needing to sort it was annoying. I feel sorry for the cook, she has so many family & friends thinking this is going to be a big windfall. 🫣 2y
mollyrotondo The bath scene was very funny! Lol especially since Caroline was trying so hard to avoid any unseemly interaction with him. And then she bumps into him in a towel 🫣 😆 but Mrs Fisher is too much with her whole wife being subservient to her husband nonsense. 2y
peanutnine @Karisa I was so surprised that Mrs F liked him more after that crazy first impression! I expected the opposite reaction to be sure 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick The bath scene was a welcome diversion from all the sitting and thinking. Those must've been some impressive legs for even Mrs Fisher to be charmed by that introduction. It was annoying that they all assumed someone else was managing the food and the bill and I especially felt bad for the cook. 2y

Mr Wilkinson telegrams
Coming for “good business opportunity”
Oy.
Protecting Lady Caroline‘s nap
Kissing his wife for no reason
He kissed her not good morning or night but kissed her!!
Sees his wife differently.. as an asset?!
The nicer he gets the nicer his wife gets.
He was nice in private not just public!?
Thoughts on our Mr Wilkinson?
His main game plan for the three women?
Does he love his wife? Or ?

Karisa He seems changed by the place too but doesn‘t quite feel real. I keep waiting for him to drop the veneer but maybe it‘s real? How is he still maneuvering for business even while there? Glad he‘s treating his wife well and she‘s happy. I‘m still having a tough time trusting him 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa I don‘t trust him. 😅 2y
AmyG I know many men-all business, all the time. Mr W seems very self absorbed. And now his wife can actually be an asset…to HIM. And Mrs W seems to love all the attention from him. Trust him? I donmt either but who knows? 2y
See All 12 Comments
Deblovestoread He is there for a business opportunity and his actions are all toward whatever gain that might give him. Lotta thinks the magic is working a miracle. I don‘t want her to be disappointed. 2y
vlwelser I don't trust this dude either. There's something slimy about the fact that he has this ulterior motive and is only seeing the women as potential clients. I think it's fun that he basically ignores Mrs A because he doesn't know who her husband is. 2y
DebinHawaii Yep, not to be trusted. And what is with all the “ear pinching”—is that supposed to be romantic & endearing?!? 🙄🫤 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii RIGHT??? What is THAT? Poor ears....... 2y
Karisa @DebinHawaii 🤣🤣🤣🙉 2y
mollyrotondo Agree with everyone! He‘s there for business. He‘s not there because he‘s falling back in love with his wife. He sees his wife as valuable to his business not valuable as a human being. He‘s slimy in his own way. I just hope someone sees it because so far all the women are falling for his charms. 2y
peanutnine @DebinHawaii I thought the same thing! Weird... She was so pleased too 😅 2y
peanutnine He definitely gives me bad vibes still. I'm glad they're getting along but can't see it lasting past their vacation, especially if it gets out that she didn't invite him bc of Lady C. Hopefully she will keep her confidence though and not shrink again 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Mellersh is a self-serving douchebag. He is only now appreciating his wife now that she has brought some potential business into his life. The way he's schmoozing them is funny, but also sad. I don't think any part of this trip is to enjoy his wife and her company alone, without pretense. 2y

Mrs Fisher restless..
Using Kate as a type of maneuver !
Game playing?
She doesn‘t seem to want her there is she her only option to ask?

Rose Mrs Arbuthnot - not praying or wanting too -
Because she is at peace in this place ?
I had many thoughts but what do you make of it?

Her desire for tangible love and be loved…
Not quite daring to ask her husband to come…
Think her husband is just following her lead in things?

Karisa I feel bad for Mrs. A. I think she should invite her husband because she really does miss him. She seems a little lost without her self given duties. Maybe she feels further from God somehow while there or religion feels less real to her there? I would have pegged her for the type to be exploring churches in the nearby town. Mrs. Fisher seems lonely too but too stubborn to admit it. Kind of surprised that all of them aren‘t exploring further. 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa I think not if she‘s is using religion as a crutch or a hiding place or out of guilt, or to be in control, then with it removed she may be at peace… maybe she‘ll find her true spirit and be happier. I suspect her husband may truly love her but is it at loss. Will see I HOPE!!! So many things to explore in this little book! 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa As for Mrs Fisher 🤦🏻‍♀️ Oy. 2y
See All 16 Comments
Karisa @TheBookHippie I agree. I just finished Brookner‘s Hotel du Lac which is also at a hotel with mostly women who are strangers. It also explores women‘s roles but from the 1980s (not a ton different really). It was good but felt so detached. I‘m enjoying Enchanted April‘s warmth more. 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa It‘s very personal and warm is a good word. The more I read the more I love! 2y
AmyG Mrs F is just manipulative. Mrs A…she fascinates me. She hid her thoughts and unhappiness for so long that now that she‘s alone, she has nothing to do but face it all. (edited) 2y
vlwelser It does seem like Mrs A is afraid to put herself out there and take this chance, worried that he might reject her. 2y
DebinHawaii @AmyG Perfectly said! I agree about both Mrs. F. & Mrs. A. I want to know more about Mrs. A & hope she gets so happiness. 2y
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie @Karisa I agree—warmth is a great word for it. It is comforting & very “readable.” 💜 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I thought the same thing it is a definite comfort read! Very soothing! 2y
Karisa @AmyG Good point! Mrs. A was hiding behind busyness and once there no excuses but left to think in peace 2y
mollyrotondo I think Mrs A is afraid to be rejected by her husband since she has viewed his reactions to her lately as distant and unfeeling. And Mrs Fisher also seems to be afraid of rejection to by someone like Kate in her social circle. She seems to always feel the need to put on airs and wouldn‘t be able to completely be herself and think if Kate was there. They both seem to want to impress and are afraid that even this won‘t help them with loneliness 2y
peanutnine @TheBookHippie I agree that I think Mrs A was using religion to hide her unhappiness in her marriage. Maybe something she turned to when she lost her child since she didn't seem to find comfort in her husband. I hope they just need to communicate and will sort out their feelings. She deserves happiness! 2y
TheBookHippie @peanutnine I am so hoping for happiness for her! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Rose seems like a pleasant women looking for a family to love. Since she lost a child, all she has is Mr A. I wish she'd invite him, even if it's just to know where she stands with him. I'm still referring to Mrs F as Ol' Stick Up the Ass. She is just so tightly wound. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick she‘s something ! @AmyG says it‘s her mother in law. 🤣 way too kind to be mine 2y

Caroline and Lotty
Lady Caroline & Mrs Wilkinson
Friends
What do you think of the addressing each other by first names as gradually the women get to know one another?

Karisa The whole Mrs and Lady thing feels so old to me. It only makes sense now for teachers and to address older people. There‘s a detachment to using the titles, almost like saying they belong to the family before being on individual. Since it was the way they were introduced to us, I have a hard time remembering their first names. 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa I had to fight to be called Miss Christine at school- however these are kids that need my first name and I am not a Mrs. as I use my maiden name 😅🤣 ♥️ I agree with the belonging … an unusually large group of women here still go buy Mrs and then their husbands first and last name… 2y
Karisa @TheBookHippie Yeah, as a teacher of 20+ years it‘s always been there (pretty much all going by Mr. or Mrs. and last name). I‘ve tried at least going by Ms. to make the married thing not the focus. Sometimes I wish I‘d kept my maiden name since it‘s easier to spell/say. Teachers get married or divorced and need to change emails even because last names are used there at work. Names are so tricky. 2y
See All 18 Comments
TheBookHippie @Karisa I know about the divorced thing I‘m like oh former Mrs _____ is now Mrs_____. Notice men never have to do this…. I just hit 30 years what the world ?! I only have two teachers next year to be with as they keep retiring on me. ( usually I have 5) I haven‘t picked up new classrooms despite being asked but I have 3 years left so…. I may pick up a first year teacher as the principal has asked me too. ♥️😅 2y
Karisa @TheBookHippie Yes! The male teachers don‘t need to worry about it. I keep thinking the young, female teachers won‘t change their names but just about all do. It‘s odd because your name is your identity in teaching. You‘ve built up a reputation around it. Why change it especially in today‘s time? 2y
Karisa @TheBookHippie Five is a lot of kiddos! You‘ve touched so many lives! 💗 2y
AmyG The story takes place 100 or so years ago where people were called by their titles. Like @Karisa I forget the first names as we were introduced to them by Mrs A and W. It would seem as they get comfortable with each other they would use first names. I will never feel comfortable being called Mrs G. Makes me feel old. 😂 (edited) 2y
vlwelser I do think she's making a point here that their identities are tied up in their husbands or families but as it goes along they seem to come into their own. But maybe I'm overthinking it. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I think that‘s it. I‘m imaging it‘s based on her life. (The author) 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa generally I have 100-112 split over 40 hours reading one on one ♥️ it‘s why I‘m out of stickers often 🤣 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🙃😝 it sounds soooo old. 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa The name thing yes. So many generations know me by name. I read with a lot of children and even a few grandchildren of my original readers! They know as soon as they get me “my mama had you she says you‘re the best and I have to behave myself” 🥺 also “Miss Christine you been a kid a long time now if you were a kid when mom read with you…” 2y
DebinHawaii It reminds me of Jane Austen & not being able to use names until well into female friendship or a courtship.😆I am a corporate trainer & part of our business is warehouse, so lots of young local males (18-mud 20s & up) so even though I introduce myself as Deb, I get called Miss Deb, Ma‘am & Auntie most of the time. Even though I find it a little annoying, they are trying to be respectful & polite! 😳 2y
Karisa @TheBookHippie I love it! A legacy of reading 😍 I have a few students this year that I taught their parents years ago too. It‘s actually really cool! 2y
mollyrotondo @Karisa @AmyG I also can‘t remember their first names since they were first introduced as Mrs W and A. I see that the book is gradually transitioning to their first names so it‘s becoming a little easier now. But Mrs Fisher is always Mrs Fisher. No one is getting closer to her yet and she‘s not letting any of them in yet. I think it‘s a nice sign of female friendship in this book. The more familiar first name address. 2y
peanutnine It's also so weird how Mr W is annoyed that they all don't call him Mr Mellersh W - why is his first name so important to him? 2y
TheBookHippie @peanutnine he‘s so odd! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe I'm not reading between the lines, but they all still seem like nothing more than women living in close proximity. As for the titles, that is one outdated practice I'm glad to be past for the most part. My last name is a bear and I certainly don't need people stumbling over themselves to call me Ms Schnorrbusch. My dad is the youngest of 15 kids...there are tons Schnorrbusch women! There'd be less distinction between us all. 2y

The servants thinking the ladies had very little life in them!
The ladies being alone
No men..

Macaroons
That tea scene …
Wow.
Reactions??

And did you catch “Reading was very important the proper exercise and development of one‘s mind was a paramount duty.”

The descriptive nature of the flowers and trees changing brings out the wanderlust in me.

I‘m finding little gems and the more I read the more I like. You????

Karisa I love macarons! The tea scene felt like they were each on their own even while sitting together. Mrs. Fisher does place a high value on reading but doesn‘t seem to do much inner reflection or empathizing with characters. I wonder if she only reads those authors she keeps mentioning meeting? Caroline seemed to meet many authors growing up too but be unimpressed. The book does make me want to visit somewhere like it. Just beautiful! 2y
TheBookHippie @Karisa seriously want to go stay about 6 months ! 2y
AmyG Ugh, Mrs F. She drops names to make herself look important. With one section left I don‘t think she will come around. I‘d love to go there alone too. 6 months sounds about oerfect! 2y
See All 9 Comments
vlwelser I love the descriptions especially the flowers. And it's April here but no flowers yet. So I may be slightly jealous. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser It‘s supposed to snow here tomorrow 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
vlwelser Yuck. I'm hoping we're done. It did snow a couple of weeks ago but only super early in the morning. 2y
DebinHawaii I am annoyed with Mrs. Fisher—she‘s go the lively place indoor & her “battlements” & lots of free time to read & is squandering it. I would give a lot for that privilege. But I guess if reading is only a duty/chore to improve your mind, it makes sense she isn‘t enjoying the space & time do it. 🧐 2y
mollyrotondo Love the macaroons! It is slightly disappointing that all the women seem lonely until a man comes around 😏 Mrs Fisher is restless I think because she is finally given the opportunity to reflect which she doesn‘t seem to have ever been given or at least been given in a long time. But loving the descriptions of the flowers. My new plant obsession has been poked at more with this book 😂 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am totally with the servants on this one. The villa sounds lovely but these ladies are boring me. We haven't even gotten to follow Lotty around on her jaunts and she might've actually ventured into town. I could go for some macarons and a lawn chair to read in the sun, though! 2y
