The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina
The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina: A Novel | Zoraida Cordova
109 posts | 71 read | 4 reading | 51 to read
Perfect for fans of Alice Hoffman, Isabel Allende, and Sarah Addison Allen, this is a gorgeously written novel about a family searching for the truth hidden in their past and the power they’ve inherited, from the author of the acclaimed and “giddily exciting” (The New York Times Book Review) Brooklyn Brujas series. The Montoyas are used to a life without explanations. They know better than to ask why the pantry never seems to run low or empty, or why their matriarch won’t ever leave their home in Four Rivers—even for graduations, weddings, or baptisms. But when Orquídea Divina invites them to her funeral and to collect their inheritance, they hope to learn the secrets that she has held onto so tightly their whole lives. Instead, Orquídea is transformed, leaving them with more questions than answers. Seven years later, her gifts have manifested in different ways for Marimar, Rey, and Tatinelly’s daughter, Rhiannon, granting them unexpected blessings. But soon, a hidden figure begins to tear through their family tree, picking them off one by one as it seeks to destroy Orquídea’s line. Determined to save what’s left of their family and uncover the truth behind their inheritance, the four descendants travel to Ecuador—to the place where Orquídea buried her secrets and broken promises and never looked backed. Alternating between Orquídea’s past and her descendants’ present, The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina is an enchanting novel about what we knowingly and unknowingly inherit from our ancestors, the ties that bind, and reclaiming your power.

Quirky characters, magic, matriarchs, adventure… This book was a lot of fun! It follows the Montoya family as they try to unravel their powerful grandmother‘s dangerous secret to protect their home for future generations to come. Oh and there‘s a river god, a magical rooster, a circus, a living star, and flowers growing out of people. Somehow she makes it all work! 😂 #LiteraryCrew

It‘s time for the #LiteraryCrew discussion! I have 7 questions posted as spoilers; you can find them on my feed, the book‘s feed, or by searching the group‘s hashtag. Feel free to jump in whenever for the discussion!

I will make the official post for November‘s book tomorrow!

Karisa I‘m about 70% of the way and loving it! It‘s so different and the characters are each so quirky, vibrant! I don‘t know why I am taking so long to read this one… But I am enjoying it 😊 1w
BookNAround There is one major plot discrepancy in this book that ruined how I was feeling about the novel as a whole and it is still driving me batty. More in the next comment (hidden by the spoiler tag). 1w
BookNAround How on earth is Lazarus wearing the ring in the picture since Bolivar wears it to control him? As this is the biggest clue to Marimar‘s father and the entire plot hinges on them figuring out who her father is, I am irrationally angry about this problem. 🤬 1w

7. Setting plays an important part in the novel. Though the location of Four Rivers is left purposefully vague within the United States, where do you think it might be? Why? Compare Orquídea‘s experience growing up in Ecuador and her descendants‘ experience visiting decades later. ~from Simon & Schuster Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Karisa I pictured it in the Southwest like maybe Arizona. It reminded me of Flagstaff which is beautiful in a tree, forest way that is so surprisingly different than the dry beauty of the desert all around it 1w

6. The climax of the novel pulls all of the characters back to Four Rivers, to the base of Orquídea Divina‘s ceiba tree. Why was this the perfect location for their last stand? What did it mean for the remaining Montoyas to come together once more? ~from Simon & Schuster Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Karisa It centered the ending and their power back to home. The portal back felt a bit of a cheat move but it helped move the story along. It also brought it all back to the central character of the family, Orquidea 1w

5. From fathers who are absent or gone too soon to powerful men who face their downfall before Orquídea, discuss the roles of the men in The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina. How do their relationships with our protagonists affect them? ~from Simon & Schuster Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Karisa Most of the men are neutral at best. Rey is the most helpful. Mike and the other husbands just seem to be there and serve the purpose of providing babies. Lazarus, the star, unwittingly gives up his power. Enrique is a jerk who gets better. Bolivar is the true power stealing villain. Much of it turns patriarchal norms on upside which made it an interesting read for me. 1w

4. Though Orquídea remarried several times, her family tree is mainly populated by strong women. Discuss the role of matriarchs in the Montoya family. ~from Simon & Schuster Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Karisa Marimar does feel like the matriarch by the end even with no children of her own (or does she adopt Rhi that felt a bit unclear). Anyway, Marimar takes care of the whole family and brings them together. Orquidea is aloof but the ultimate matriarch even after her death, especially after her death (edited) 1w

3. Compare and contrast how each of our protagonists—Marimar, Rey, and Tatinelly—have followed their own life paths. In what ways do they each connect with their heritage? ~from Simon & Schuster Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Karisa Seeing each protagonist grow into their own best version of themselves was fun. Marimar perhaps changed the most. She was the leader of the family by the end and I was happy with the way her father subplot turned out 1w
Karisa For Rey, I wished I could see his artwork. I kept picturing paintings like Frida Kahlo surrealist style. I wanted him to make a painting series of the river god so that he would regain his strength as more people remembered him. That part reminded me of American Gods, one of my all time favorites 1w

2. Zoraida has brought the Montoya family so vividly to life that many readers have said they see their own family members in Orquídea, Marimar, Rey, Tatinelly, or the others; or that they wish they could befriend them in real life. Which character resonated with you the most? Why? ~from Simon & Schuster Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

Karisa So many wonderful characters in this book! I liked Rhiannon the most because she was so cool. Wise beyond her years, fearless, and seemingly born in touch with her magic. I didn‘t understand how casually she seemed to get over the death of her parents though. Maybe it‘s because she could talk to ghosts but still… Tatinelly and Mike‘s deaths felt unnecessary 1w
BookNAround I liked that Tati was contented in her life and unconcerned that her magic seemed to be so unassuming compared to many of the rest of the Montoyas. 1w

1. The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina is categorized as magical realism, but there are rules—almost laws of nature—to the magic infused in the Montoyas‘ story. What are they? What is the price they each have to pay? ~from Simon & Schuster Reading Group Guide #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead

How can this be the 31st??? I really dropped the ball on #LiteraryCrew reminders this time…I‘m adjusting to a new work routine while working around Zeke‘s medical needs, and down time is pretty much nonexistent. I miss reading!

Today is discussion day, and I will have questions posted sometime this evening, US East Coast time.

I realize too I never posted a November reminder; we‘re reading The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta. Official post later! ⬇ï¸

Librarybelle â¬†ï¸ Also, today is the last day for recommendations for next year‘s reading! You can offer suggestions through this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQrP7h_AWSqNT1ksO3P64stx_f7cG9tKV_KPNE... 2w

Karisa Finished it this morning and went in for the questions. Maybe some others will eventually finish too and have a slow discussion on it (or not, that‘s ok too)😊 Worth the read if any are on the fence about it! Different, quirky, thought-provoking but warm and fun too💗 1w

Next audiobook! 🎧 One of my New Year‘s resolutions is to read all the physical TBR on my shelves (or the ones I started the year with because I can never stick to a book buying ban) and I‘m finding audiobooks are making it easier. Kind of feels like cheating but life is chaotic and it‘s easy to listen while stuck in traffic or doing housework.

Ruthiella I love having the option of audio books. An often, unless the narrator is exceptional, I can‘t even remember which part I read vs which part I listened to. 7mo
ElizaMarie Audiobooks are amazing! I find myself using them more and more, since its so hard to carve out time where you can sit and read physical books. Audio helps you multitask - #AudioCommute #AudioChores all much needed times! Enjoy! 7mo

A magical realism story of Orquídea Divina fleeing Ecuador and her grandchildren discovering her secrets. Two timelines, with magic, secrets, mysteries, generational trauma, and a resolution that left me gasping! Undoubtedly, my favorite read of June.

And the audiobook was, pun intended, divine.

The story of Orquídea & her flight from Ecuador to make something of herself. & the story of all her children & grandchildren coming to terms w/ her legacy of secrets/trauma.

Wow! Totally worth the wait! Such interesting characters dealing w/ generational trauma against a beautiful backdrop of magical realism. The parallel timelines gave us little bits of the mystery at a time, & the resolution! Whew. Going to look for more by Cordova.?????

2024: 4
I love magical realism. It takes me back to childhood and the stories my grandma would weave for me. This book hit close to home. I'm not Ecuadorian but I am a latina from Texas and very frequently drive through a small town called three rivers which instantly became the village of four rivers from the book in my imagination. I can relate to the familial folklore and culture so this was a fun read for me.

“She wondered, did everyone have such a fraught relationship w/the places they came from? Did anyone else have a grandmother who might as well have been a legend, a myth, a series of miracles that took the shape of an old woman?â€

This was hard to follow, I‘m not sure I understood it, but somehow I think I still liked it? I‘m not a fan of magical realism but this was really more a mix of a family saga & fantasy w/beautiful writing.

This book is all about inter generational trauma, curse, and blessing. It‘s full of magical realism, with a strong emphasis on the magic. It‘s also dual-time! At times I was like, “this is too bonkers†but at the same time it did keep my attention. If you can just go with it, I think it‘s more enjoyable. Not my typical read, but I‘d rate it a pick overall.

For April‘s #ReadAroundTheWorldChallenge the country is #Ecuador, giving me the perfect reason to get this one off my TBR! This multigenerational magical realism story takes a little while to really get rolling with the bulky cast size (the titular grandmother has been married five times and has nine children- many married with children of their own). But the unique imagery & the drama of the story, hooks you in & makes the latter half move quick!

Not sure if it was the meandering story or the sleepy narration, but I found myself replaying chapters because I had stopped paying attention. As a book about family storytelling I though I would enjoy this more as a listen. Reading it as a printed word may have been more enjoyable.

A multigenerational tale in multiple timelines. There were extra details at times but it was very beautiful &wistful.

The matriarch of the family, who has been a force of nature through & through, calls her family together before she passes on to accept their inheritance, but there‘s more than money & property passed down.

My gifts are done so I started making this more complicated glass project for myself def at the limit of my skills 🔥🦅ðŸ‰

This book was very different! It started out so good, and proceeded to get extremely strange. I get that mystical realism books are meant to be that way. I think I would have liked the story better if it had been a bit more realistic. I did love the parts that took place in the circus, as I love stories about circuses or carnivals. If you like a really bizarre read, this book is for you.

Another great Target Book Club find. This novel tells the story of a complicated family infused with magic. I enjoyed seeing the family dynamics unfold between the modern day story and the flashbacks. The story shifted from magical realism to fantasy in the last 1/4 of the story. I preferred the earlier parts of the story where the magic was unexplained, but I still enjoyed the book overall.

I think Cordova tried to accomplish a bit too much in just one book. I also “wish†the source of the family‘s magic didn‘t come from quite so far afield…but I still enjoyed this magical tale! Perfect for fans of Encanto, The Night Circus, & The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, with themes of family, secrecy, communication, prejudice, mother-daughter relationships, folklore, domestic abuse, & generational trauma.

This was really well written. It‘s a story about magic and family drama which I really liked. It did get over complicated in parts and it lost my interest a few times.
