January 2020 - Book 6/52
Prompt: Favorite 2019 Prompt (A Ghost Story)
#6 of my year. This was my BOTM pick and I can‘t wait to begin. I am back on a roll with my reading and that makes me a happy girl!
😱 Viv leaves home at 20 to make her own way. She ends up working the night shift at the Sun Down Motel, where there are few guests, but that doesn‘t mean it‘s always quiet. She begins investigating some deaths of young women in the town, and begins to uncover more than she can handle alone.
Thirty-five years later, her niece Carly wants to investigate the disappearance of her aunt Viv, and she ends up investigating those same events.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ghost stories are a difficult sell for me. I don‘t like gore, & I don‘t want to be kept up all night jumping at every sound. The Sun Down Motel is the perfect mix of spooky & the creep factor was high. A quick read with a satisfying mystery. January book of the month pick ☝️This is a good one to read during the fall 👻🎃 So, add it to your stacks! #botm
This was super creepy and very good! I devoured it all yesterday. I'm generally tired of the dual timeline thing, but it was done fairly well in this book. The two timelines were so similar sometimes that it was hard to keep them straight, but that might have been an intentional part of the structure. There were some errors in some very minor details, mostly time period details, or things that just felt more later 1980s than 1982.
Hot damn, I loved this book! Part ghost story, part murder mystery - didn‘t want it to end. The ending was sort of expected, but not enough to be disappointing, as there were still a couple of unanswered questions. Overall, I highly recommend this one!
I think this novel was really over hyped for me. It was a fun read that kept me flipping pages, but in the end I was disappointed. It was predictable and got repetitive at times flipping between the past and present. This is a nice mindless read, but it wasn‘t spooky or inventive enough for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just a few of the books I am hoping to get through at the beginning of the year, but with a lot of new releases that I am super excited for coming out in the next few weeks, we‘ll see how many of these I actually get to. Next up for sure is The Sun Down Motel. Are there any others that I should prioritize?
Well now, that was fun! It‘ll make me look at the motels that lining America‘s old highways a bit differently now and also jump if a door creaks open or closes on its own. Oh help me if a fuse ever goes out and plunges me into darkness. Yeah, this one was another fun ghost story if you‘re in the mood. It wraps up nicely at the end with more of a twisting thriller storyline. Good read and now I‘m off to turn the lights on all around the house.
I really enjoyed this! Definitely a fun and spooky mystery/thriller. I have some mild criticisms of it, including a completely unnecessary romantic plot line (one of my pet peeves) and I didn‘t like it quite as much as The Broken Girls, but it‘s still a great read. #BotM
This one was one part murder mystery and one part ghost story! For me it wasnt creepy but it was a really well laid out story. It kept me intrigued the whole time! Im definitely adding her other books to my TBR!
I love this spooky little book and look at that gorgeous cover!
The Sun Down Motel follows two different women in two alternating timelines. We have Vivs story that took place in 1982 and Carlys that‘s taking place in 2017. I really enjoyed the strong female characters, the small town setting with murder, mystery and a paranormal aspect tossed in.
Add to those TBRs
I gave up on Topics of Conversation. Ive been hearing a lot of good things about this one! Hope its as spooky as ive heard! 🙃

Where to begin? There are so many things to love about this book: the writing is excellent & engaging, even with the alternating chapters & parallel timelines. I love both the characters of Viv & Carly, especially Viv, & the great secondary characters of Marnie & Alma (& Nick & Heather). Lots of strong women here! I love how SSJ writes books that combine so many genres & does it so well: mystery, paranormal, true crime & historical fiction. 5⭐️
Got my #BOTM today - anyone read this one yet? 😁
Is there anyone else out there reading this at the moment who is getting a tad freaked out? 🙋🏻♀️ Anyone? Probably not a good idea to read this before bed but I‘m loving it!
Ok friends, this book comes out February 18th 2020. I have a subscription with BOTM and was lucky enough to get this a little early. I‘m only on page 68 but my gosh is this book scary and I don‘t scare easily but I have gotten chills from it twice already. So if spine tingling is your thing I suggest placing holds at your library asap.
At this rate I think I‘m going to love this book.
