The Sun Down Motel
The Sun Down Motel | Simone St. James
The secrets lurking in a rundown roadside motel ensnare a young woman, just as they did her aunt thirty-five years before, in this new atmospheric suspense novel from the national bestselling and award-winning author of The Broken Girls. Upstate NY, 1982. Every small town like Fell, New York, has a place like the Sun Down Motel. Some customers are from out of town, passing through on their way to someplace better. Some are locals, trying to hide their secrets. Viv Delaney works as the night clerk to pay for her move to New York City. But something isn't right at the Sun Down, and before long she's determined to uncover all of the secrets hidden there. Upstate NY, 2017. Carly Kirk has always been fascinated by her aunt Viv who disappeared from the Sun Down before Carly was born. Using a small inheritance from when her mom dies, Carly leaves college to go to Fell to figure out what happened to her aunt thirty-five years ago. Soon, Carly is mirroring her aunt's life, working as the night clerk at the motel, which hasn't changed since 1982. The guest book is still handwritten, the rooms still have actual keys, and a haunting presence still lingers. Carly discovers that Viv had been trying to unravel mysteries of her own--including a possible serial killer working in Fell. If Carly can find the answers Viv was searching for, she might be able to solve the mystery that has haunted her family for years.

#6 of my year. This was my BOTM pick and I can‘t wait to begin. I am back on a roll with my reading and that makes me a happy girl!

xxjenadanxx I love Simone St James! Can't wait to read this one! 2d
Caffeinated_Reader @xxjenadanxx I am absolutely hooked on this book. This is my first time reading his work and I must get more! 2d
xxjenadanxx I discovered her by chance last year looking for.a book for a Halloween challenge. The Haunting of Maddy Clare is what I chose and got hooked. The Broken Girls is also super good. 2d
Caffeinated_Reader Omg bravo. I haven‘t stayed up all night to finish a book in a while and can I just say this one was totally worth staying awake for. I was so into the book my dinner got cold and I skipped it all together. I loved this story. Full of ghosts and mysterious family tragedy and drama. It was great. 2d
Caffeinated_Reader @xxjenadanxx I‘m a bonehead lol I just finished and realized that it‘s not a him but a her haha I LOVED this story so much. I have to read her other books for sure. 2d

Thirty-five years later, her niece Carly wants to investigate the disappearance of her aunt Viv, and she ends up investigating those same events.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ghost stories are a difficult sell for me. I don‘t like gore, & I don‘t want to be kept up all night jumping at every sound. The Sun Down Motel is the perfect mix of spooky & the creep factor was high. A quick read with a satisfying mystery. January book of the month pick ☝️This is a good one to read during the fall 👻🎃 So, add it to your stacks! #botm

This was super creepy and very good! I devoured it all yesterday. I'm generally tired of the dual timeline thing, but it was done fairly well in this book. The two timelines were so similar sometimes that it was hard to keep them straight, but that might have been an intentional part of the structure. There were some errors in some very minor details, mostly time period details, or things that just felt more later 1980s than 1982.

Hot damn, I loved this book! Part ghost story, part murder mystery - didn‘t want it to end. The ending was sort of expected, but not enough to be disappointing, as there were still a couple of unanswered questions. Overall, I highly recommend this one!

I think this novel was really over hyped for me. It was a fun read that kept me flipping pages, but in the end I was disappointed. It was predictable and got repetitive at times flipping between the past and present. This is a nice mindless read, but it wasn‘t spooky or inventive enough for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well now, that was fun! It‘ll make me look at the motels that lining America‘s old highways a bit differently now and also jump if a door creaks open or closes on its own. Oh help me if a fuse ever goes out and plunges me into darkness. Yeah, this one was another fun ghost story if you‘re in the mood. It wraps up nicely at the end with more of a twisting thriller storyline. Good read and now I‘m off to turn the lights on all around the house.

I really enjoyed this! Definitely a fun and spooky mystery/thriller. I have some mild criticisms of it, including a completely unnecessary romantic plot line (one of my pet peeves) and I didn‘t like it quite as much as The Broken Girls, but it‘s still a great read. #BotM

4.5 stars

I love this spooky little book and look at that gorgeous cover!
The Sun Down Motel follows two different women in two alternating timelines. We have Vivs story that took place in 1982 and Carlys that‘s taking place in 2017. I really enjoyed the strong female characters, the small town setting with murder, mystery and a paranormal aspect tossed in.

Where to begin? There are so many things to love about this book: the writing is excellent & engaging, even with the alternating chapters & parallel timelines. I love both the characters of Viv & Carly, especially Viv, & the great secondary characters of Marnie & Alma (& Nick & Heather). Lots of strong women here! I love how SSJ writes books that combine so many genres & does it so well: mystery, paranormal, true crime & historical fiction. 5⭐️
