The Last Kingdom (The Last Kingdom Series, Book 1)
The Last Kingdom (The Last Kingdom Series, Book 1) | Bernard Cornwell
BBC2s major Autumn 2015 TV series THE LAST KINGDOM is based on Bernard Cornwells bestselling novels on the making of England and the fate of his great hero, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. The Last Kingdom is the first book in the series. Uhtred is an English boy, born into the aristocracy of ninth-century Northumbria. Orphaned at ten, he is captured and adopted by a Dane and taught the Viking ways. Yet Uhtred's fate is indissolubly bound up with Alfred, King of Wessex, who rules over the only English kingdom to survive the Danish assault. The struggle between the English and the Danes and the strife between christianity and paganism is the background to Uhtred's growing up. He is left uncertain of his loyalties but a slaughter in a winter dawn propels him to the English side and he will become a man just as the Danes launch their fiercest attack yet on Alfred's kingdom. Marriage ties him further still to the West Saxon cause but when his wife and child vanish in the chaos of the Danish invasion, Uhtred is driven to face the greatest of the Viking chieftains in a battle beside the sea. There, in the horror of the shield-wall, he discovers his true allegiance. The Last Kingdom, like most of Bernard Cornwell's books, is firmly based on true history. It is the first novel of a series that will tell the tale of Alfred the Great and his descendants and of the enemies they faced, Viking warriors like Ivar the Boneless and his feared brother, Ubba. Against their lives Bernard Cornwell has woven a story of divided loyalties, reluctant love and desperate heroism. In Uhtred, he has created one of his most interesting and heroic characters and in The Last Kingdom one of his most powerful and passionate novels.

@Cuilin @dabbe Here are my selections for January's and February's #bookedintime themes.

January brings me a different Bernard Cornwell series, this time featuring Uhtred of Bebbanberg and Alfred the Great.

February isn't technically the 1917 revolution but the reign of Nicholas and Alexandra and the events leading up to it.

Cuilin Both work fabulously 👍 4mo
dabbe I got the January title on the spreadsheet; what's the exact February title and author? 🤩 4mo

I love Jonathan Keeble, but even his narration cannot save Bernard Cornwell's writing for me. I am so bored by this story. I keep giving Cornwell a try because I'm fascinated by the time periods he writes about, but I'm disappointed almost every time. He's just not for me.

AlaMich I read one of his books eons ago. I really liked his writing style, but I thought the battles were boring and there were soooo many battles. (edited) 9mo
DGRachel @AlaMich I‘ve read his Arthurian trilogy - loved the first one, second was ok, and I was disappointed by the third. He went off the rails with Agincourt. Gallows Hill wasn‘t bad, but his writing style just isn‘t my favorite. I‘m not sure why. It just feels like such a slog to get through. And I‘m probably just holding a grudge over Agincourt. 😂😂 9mo
AlaMich @DGRachel I read The Archer‘s Tale. I know his Sharpe series is super popular but I have a hunch it‘s just more battle scenes, only in a different era. 9mo
DGRachel @AlaMich Ugh. The Archer‘s Tale description screams “I would love this” and this is how he keeps sucking me in. 😭😭 I forgot he wrote the Sharpe books. I wanted to try those, too, but yes - all the battles. But I love those. 9mo

🎧 Jonathan Keeble raises the rating a full star! Fantastic!

This is an entertaining historical fiction based on Bernard Cornwall‘s actual family living in England during the 9th/10th centuries.

The story is told by Uhtred, a nobleman taken by Vikings as a child. He has no love for his King Albert & by the time he returns he‘s more Danish than English. The author knows how to stage a battle.

I bet this is an even better visual!

My husband has never been much of a reader. But in the last few months he's been devouring books for some reason (I'm beyond thrilled with this). He started with Jordan's Wheel of Time series and then read all of Cornwell's Saxon Chronicles. He's looking for books similar to Cornwell, but they aren't my thing, so I don't have any suggestions for him.

Any recommendations for similar writers / books / series?

TrishB Conn Iggulden and Ken Follett are good ones. 2y
Mollyanna He might like Colleen McCullough and Edward Rutherford. 2y
Vansa Patrick o'brian's Aubrey-Maturin books are excellent historical fiction. Also Robert Harris' books, I love them- his Cicero trilogy is great. 2y

I am late attending the Bernard Cornwell feast. Having first read The Pagan Lord and discovered Uhtred, I circled back to start at the beginning. This novel takes Uhtred up to the age of 20, marriage and fatherhood, and his first shield wall. Intense, interesting, and very well written. Looking forward to the ride, cozy on my couch. 4/5

LeahBergen I‘ve read several of these and have bought the latest each year for my husband (although the last has supposedly been published now). 2y

I watched season one episode one today and was pleasantly surprised to see it was off of the book series by Bernard Cornwall (tagged). Lots happened in this introductory episode. At times a bit too graphic for me. But love how it‘s telling the story of England unifying and taking back control from the Danes all four major land areas.

TiredLibrarian @CrowCAH It sounds a bit like Braveheart, which I loved. 3y
CrowCAH @TiredLibrarian I‘ve never seen Braveheart, but from my understanding it‘s similar. In that one it‘s the Scots against England. 3y

I am currently reading the Saxon Chronicles (Bernard Cornwell). Almost finishing the first book “The last kingdom”, beautiful story! The second book “ The Pale horseman” arrived yesterday ?. I am reading the Brazilian version and the cover art is fascinating, when all the books are put together they form a beautiful portrait. Fun fact: the title “The Pale horseman” was translated to Brazilian português as “The knight of death”.

Lesanne I don‘t know if you‘d be interested but the series adaptation on Netflix is really good! Entitled “The Last Kingdom.” 3y

Heideschrampf It‘s not! The basics are the same, sure, but the book timeline moves much faster, so that you‘ve basically surpassed the series after book one or two. I started listening to the audiobooks on youtube after watching the series and found it a worthwhile addition. 3y

This is Cornwell‘s first book in the Saxon Tales (the series was renamed the Last Kingdom, I guess because of the Netflix show) & my 2nd read of it. The MC is “Uhtred son of Uhtred” (you have to use the character‘s voice from the show), and this is the story of his childhood—how he, a Saxon, became a Dane, and then a Saxon again. Lots of background in this one, to prepare us for the series. Read it. Then read the series & watch the show. Worth it.

Sorry for my belated response to #two4tuesday. Thank you for the tag @TheSpineView !

1. If it‘s been years & I want to read a new book in the series (I.e., Harkness‘s All Souls Trilogy), I‘ll reread the series. If the series‘ novels can standalone (CJ Samson‘s Shardlake, James Rollins‘ Sigma Force), then I don‘t reread.

2. The tagged book is from a series I read years ago & stopped at book 5. Now I want to catch up to all 13! So it‘s a reread.

Bookworm54 I am on book 4 of these I believe. Slowly working my way through. Do you watch the show? Season 4 is out on Netflix on Sunday apparently so I am very excited! :) 4y

Husband and I are watching this series and it‘s making me desperately want to reread this series. I devoured it years ago until I caught up with the author, waiting for book six. So I stopped. Now there are 12, count ‘em, TWELVE books in the series, 13 if you count the one coming out this year. So I hate to put all my Litsy challenges on hold, but it‘s time to reread some books and do some catching up!! I mean, really, “fate is inexorable.” 😁

i.z.booknook I love the tv show! 😍 and season 4 is coming so soon! I just binge watched 1-3 again in preparation 😂 I‘ve never read the books but the series definitely makes me want to! I‘ve always wondered how closely the show follows the books 😊 4y
Texreader @TheAliceEvers The books are awesome! The show mostly follows the books but in a very truncated way. Lots more detail and good stuff in the books. I loved the battle for London (book 5). I wonder if/when that will be covered or has it already? The tv show just sails through the books. But it‘s a good show. We are middle of season 2 now. 4y

Book 1 of the readathon (and the series) completed!

Uhtred is an English lord that grew up with Danes. He learnt to fight with them, loved them, but circumstances now find him fighting against them, for King Alfred of Wessex.

I find Uhtred to be much more likeable in the book compared to the TV series (though I like him in both) and I think the narrative style of the book is part of that reason :)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ALL THE STARS!

This was so much fun to read! I love this period of history: the time of the Vikings and their raids. This story is mostly about Alfred the Great and his mission to save England from their sweeping conquests, but it is told thru Uhtred‘s eyes. Uhtred, born English, captured and trained for war by the enemy Ragnar. Oh my goodness, I was riveted and breathless in nearly every scene. These characters 100% were ALIVE to me.

I‘ve used this #map as much as any other in any book I‘ve read, following Uhtred‘s battles with the Danes (Vikings) and the English. #bookmap

The author has also included a “Place-Names” list on the following pages since the spelling of the towns in the 800‘s was so different than what we know now. For ex: Lundene = London, but some are less obvious. This has been so helpful to me!

TrishB I did a lot of checking of the place names when I started this series. As you say, some are more obvious than others. 5y

tessavi @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled This would be my first Cornwell! I watched a few of the episodes though and enjoyed what I saw. 6y

Pickpick

An enjoyable book about the battles between the Danes and the English in the 9th century. Now I can check out the show on Netflix too! Will definitely read the rest of this series at some point.
