I hope everyone who wanted to participate was able to enjoy a nice cozy mystery as we head into winter for the #OhCanada read. This is a light discussion on thoughts about the series and/or author.

A reminder that many read different books in the series so no spoilers please.

Jess861 I enjoyed my first adventure in Three Pines! Not sure I'll read all in the series but I can see myself picking one up every so often if I find myself in the mood for a cozy mystery. 2d

LapReader I‘m almost done with mine. So far not that impressed. 2d
lauraisntwilder We have a long drive "home" to see family for holidays. My husband and I usually listen to audiobooks on the road, typically hardboiled stuff like Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammet, that we both like. At Thanksgiving this year, we listened to Still Life and we did A Fatal Grace at Christmas. I didn't realize these were considered "cozy," but it makes sense. We enjoyed them. (Although we did listen to a Chester Himes on our way back!) 2d
kspenmoll I am behind, so will go into January. Listening to 2d
merelybookish Can you add me to the #ohCanada book tag please! 2d
Ruthiella I read the second book. I‘d read the first a few years ago. I don‘t hate them but I know they aren‘t for me. Somehow I am just not smitten with Three Pines and its residents. But I do appreciate how Canadian they are! Everyone wore a toque! 🇨🇦 2d
Jess861 @LapReader That's fair. I enjoyed Still Life but didn't love it. I don't really read to many mysteries though. 2d
Jess861 @LapReader which one are you reading if you don't mind me asking? 2d
Jess861 @lauraisntwilder I'm not really sure what constitutes 'cozy' lol. I'm not much of a mystery reader myself. 2d
Jess861 @kspenmoll I also posted a day early. Hope you enjoy the book! 2d
Jess861 @merelybookish absolutely, glad to have you join! 2d
Jess861 @Ruthiella I agree, I didn't fall in love with the characters. It is very Canadian!! 2d
PurpleyPumpkin As I read this book earlier this year, I was hoping to get to the second in the series in December. Alas, I did not. But I did want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed SL and found it to be a real page turner. The big reveal wasn‘t as gripping as I thought it would be, but I still loved the book. I‘m planning to continue with the series. 👍🏽 2d
Jess861 @PurpleyPumpkin I didn't guess who did it throughout the read so that was a nice surprise for me when I was reading. 2d
LapReader I‘m reading the grey wolf. Listening to his constant thinking that doesn‘t seem to get him anywhere is starting to drive me nuts. 2d
Jess861 @LapReader While I enjoyed the first book, after reading it, I've wondered how the series has made it to so many books. I enjoyed the first but I can't imagine almost 20 books centered around Three Pines and the Inspector. 1d
Kitta I skipped this time - too much going on and a reading slump in November where I didn‘t open a book meant I had a lot to catch up on. I‘ll join in again soon! 19h
kwmg40 I finished the latest book in the series, The Black Wolf, which I didn't like as much as earlier ones. I love this series because the fictional Three Pines is set where I grew up, and so I enjoy all the references to places I'm familiar with. Not all the books are great but a few have been brilliant. There is a lot of character development and continuing plotlines throughout the series so it's best read in order. 18h

Thoughts on the book? Thoughts on the themes? Thoughts on the author? Just thoughts in general?

Will you read more by this author?

Sorry for such a quick little post for the discussion at the end but I'm battling the flu and a cold right now and this is about as much thought as my head can put into anything right now 😆!

mcctrish I am so glad you kicked my butt to finally read this - I will totally read more JB. It should be required reading imo. The glimpse into what life was like for indigenous people, women especially, and the trauma of war 2mo
Jess861 @mcctrish This turned into The Bird Family trilogy if you liked it. Through Black Spruce is the second book in the trilogy. 2mo

Ruthiella I‘m glad to finally read Boyden. I don‘t think I will continue with the trilogy, however. There‘s something about the writing style that doesn‘t grab me. But I appreciate this portrayal of the indigenous Canadian experience of WWI. Hope you feel better soon! ❤️ (edited) 2mo
Jess861 @Ruthiella Sometimes writing styles are just hard to get into! Glad you didn't mind the book! Thanks so much...I look forward to not feeling like a bag of bricks has hit my head 😆 2mo
lauraisntwilder I hope you're on the mend soon! This was a good one. 2mo
Jess861 @lauraisntwilder Thanks so much! It's what happens with young kids - always sick, lol 2mo
Blueberry I'm still reading. I realized I had already read the third on the series. Now I'll have to read the second. I do like his writing. 2mo
Jess861 @Blueberry Glad you're enjoying it! It is definitely a solid book to get through even though it's not a huge page count (I found so anyways) 2mo
kwmg40 I hope you are recovering. I started this book but got bogged down in the trench scenes and decided to put it aside for a while. I'll probably get back to it eventually. I've not read Boyden's other books but I've seen the movie adaptation of Through Black Spruce. I thought it was good, though it had gotten mixed reviews. 2mo
Jess861 @kwmg40 Totally get it - I think that's what I meant about a solid book up above. Sometimes it's good to put a read aside for a bit! 2mo
PurpleyPumpkin Hope you're on the mend @Jess861! I just finished this audiobook today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent writing and the war scenes sometimes had me on the edge of my seat. I like JB but sometimes have a hard time getting started with his books. So, this was a welcome pick for me. Thanks for hosting! 2mo
Jess861 @PurpleyPumpkin Glad you enjoyed it and were able to get through the book! Sometimes books work better on audio. 2mo
Kitta I have it a 3/5 some aspects I liked a lot some and some (like the trenches) made me struggle. I think the monotony is the point? But it was tough going. I liked the last 3rd a lot more and I‘m glad I stuck with it. Really interesting story. (edited) 1mo

The #OhCanada book club is going to head to Three Pines for the last read of 2025. Read any of the Louise Penny books depending where you are in the series or a book you maybe want to reread. There will likely be a few different books read so discussion question(s) will still be posted at the end but will be high level as to spoil any of the books.

All are welcome to join this low key bi-monthly read of Canadian authors. We will continue in 2026.

Tamra Such a fun series! Who doesn‘t want to live in Three Pines? Only someone who might fall victim to murder. 🥹 3mo

Lindy @LeahBergen Thanks! I don‘t have any orange clothing, but I want to show my support for residential school survivors and for those who didn‘t survive, and to recognize the harm done to families and communities. 🧡 1y
