Gone Girl
Gone Girl | Gillian Flynn
Marriage can be a real killer. One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction. Gone Girls toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn. On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunnes fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nicks clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isnt doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wifes head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the mediaas well as Amys fiercely doting parentsthe town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and hes definitely bitterbut is he really a killer? As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didnt do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet? With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

Of course, since I chose not to read this until now, I was unable to avoid spoilers and knew the twist, but it was still interesting looking at the psychology of the characters. Thrillers are always a good choice for the hospital, as they keep your interest but aren‘t too deep for the most part.

This is one of the craziest books I have ever read, but I mean that in the best way possible. Though no character is completely likable, there is a clear protagonist and antagonist, and it is so fun to watch them play off one another. This was a heck of a ride and one of the best books I‘ve read in a long time.

Tainted love and devastation. This thriller follows Nick's twisting journey as he searches for his wife and through her mind. This story explores the extent of revenge and manipulation by a brilliant writer in a brilliant novel.

This was worth the hype I'd heard about it for so many years. Amy is a psycho and I love her for it. I know she's not supposed to be likeable, but there's something about a deeply disturbed yet motivated woman that I find so satisfying. And the writing is superb. Definitely ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The characters were so annoying that even the end elicited little more than a “Welp. That figures. Glad this book is over.”

But I have to give points for writing style and creativity, I always appreciate narration from multiple characters. And I must admit it takes talent to write terrible characters.

#audiogardening with a new book today...still at the beginning but I‘m quickly getting the sense the underlying theme is “b!tches be crazy”. 🤨 Kinda over the whole trope of female characters saying “I know, I‘m acting like a girl” as if acting like a girl is inherently a bad thing. But oooo, wow, a female character said it so she‘s not like “other” girls! How cool and edgy. 🤮

Reading Gone Girl for the first time. About a quarter of the way through. The only other book I've read by Gillian Flynn was Sharp Objects. Anyone else feel like certain authors have a very distinct "voice"? On the first page I could just tell that this was the same author for both books.

bookandcat Gillian Flynn's voice is HYPER distinctive you are right 3mo

I‘m way behind the bandwagon on this one because, A) I had to save up to buy it. B) My library hold took this long to go through. Or C) I guess I feel like I‘m too cool to read books when they are being hyped up. The correct answer is C. Ugh. Now I sound like Amy....👇

#Booked2019 | #BookToMovie

📷: Libby

LiterRohde But speaking of Amy, the narrators of this book are completely unreliable. The characters are unlikable, if not horrible, people. The writing was really good. I read for hours at a time. One of my favorite parts of the author‘s style was the one-liners and descriptions that made me sit up and take notice, and even laugh (Midwesterners and red Solo cups, anyone?). The plot is somewhat predictable. And I really liked it....👇 3mo
LiterRohde I tend to like books with unreliable narrators and complex flawed characters (or sympathetic villains). It just feels somehow more real to me. So no surprise there. What did surprise me a little was how much I enjoyed being right there with the author, or even a step ahead, right from the start....👇 3mo
LiterRohde I tend toward books that ask you to go along for the ride. The kind of book you put together in hindsight even though in the moment you were totally confused or surprised. I think Gone Girl worked for me because it was like watching a train wreck in slow motion - you know from the word ‘go‘ that it is going to be bad but you can‘t help but watch how it all unfolds....👇 (edited) 3mo
See All 20 Comments
LiterRohde And I like how it ultimately unfolded. I don‘t think there is any other way it could have ended given the character dynamics of the rest of the book....👇 3mo
LiterRohde Quotes like this, “Hell, at this point, I can‘t imagine my story without Amy. She is my forever antagonist. We are one long frightening climax,” and especially this, “We're a sick, fucking toxic Möbius strip, Amy. We complete each other in the nastiest, ugliest possible way,” prove to me that a tidier ending would betray the spirit of the book. So, now that you have my thoughts, if you, like Amy, would like to get in the last word, comment below. 3mo
Cinfhen Brilliant review and reminder why this book was so f%cking delicious!!! Still one of my favorite thrillers ever!! All the praises for Gillian Flynn🙌🏻 3mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen Thanks. Was it too long? I really have trouble with brevity when it comes to reviews. I‘m asking because it doesn‘t seem to be getting as much traffic as my reviews usually do. And I put a lot of thought into my posts. Tell all your friends to give it a like! 😉 I know. I know. Likes aren‘t everything. I‘m thankful for the faithful few, like you. You‘d just think with thousands of followers, I could get more than 40-50 likes. 💁🏻‍♂️ (edited) 3mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen Also, it‘s my first Flynn book. If she has other books, have you read them and do you have a recommendation? 3mo
Cinfhen I really liked this novella by Flynn and recommend it👉🏼 3mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen Thanks! 3mo

LiterRohde @Cinfhen Sharp Objects is also a Netflix or Amazon show, I think. I haven‘t seen the show or the GG movie, have you? (edited) 3mo
Cinfhen As far as the few likes, I hear ya. If I get 80 nowadays it‘s a lot!! I used to get over 100 likes all the time. I think Litsy is puttering out 🤷‍♀️ 3mo
Cinfhen I haven‘t seen any of the Flynn Netflix collaborations but I‘m curious too. I did see the GG movie and I thought it was well done. 3mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen Dark Places sounds good. I‘ll have to see what my library is offering of hers. Thanks for the rec‘s. 3mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen It‘s too bad that Litsy seems to be stalling out. I really like the singular focus of book stuff, without a lot of the other crap you get on FB and Twitter. I‘ve seen a little bit of it, but not much, and thankfully it doesn‘t seem very popular. 3mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen The Grownup and Dark Placed are now on hold. Should come though soon. I‘ll be able to get to them after reading The Goldman‘s the Jinni. 3mo
LiterRohde @Cinfhen Excellent. It sounds really interesting. 3mo

This one‘s hard to rate. It was so well written and the complexity of lies and details was impressive. But it‘s hype worked against itself. I kept waiting for a bigger twist and consequently underplayed the twists that came. I think if I had read it when it first came out, the ending would have been more chilling. Still, the writing and plot nuances were greatly executed.

I finished this book, coincidentally, on July 5th.

I had seen the movie before reading the book. I felt the adaptation was pretty well done, though just about every single character was far more vile in the book than in the movie. 😂

Very good book and the author‘s use of the timeline was wonderful to keep the suspense going without confusion. I still, however, like Sharp Objects and Dark Places a little more I think.

Not super impressed. Could be because I saw the movie first. Don't recall much of the film, but still recalled plot points so the events were less impactful. Also not a fan of when authors write full chapters as diary entries. I hate the forced personality and "ohemgee" writing. I also just did not enjoy Amy as a character at all, and I love a good psycho.
