Gideon the Ninth
Gideon the Ninth | Tamsyn Muir
Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you'll ever have with a skeleton. The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit. Tamsyn Muirs Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis wont set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideons sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

I dunno why I held out on reading this one for so long but it was my bookclub's pick this month and I'm so glad! It's about necromancers so yes, it's dark & a bit macabre but it's also compelling & witty & I didn't want to stop reading. There's a mystery to uncover in a Gothic palace, a possible murderer to reveal & so many sword fights. Gideon was such a fun character to experience it all through her eyes

Gideon is pissed about the hand she was dealt in life and has no qualms making it everybody‘s problem. When she‘s forced into the cavalier job for necromancer Harrow, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and her mortal enemy, she turns her anger towards whatever is picking off necro/cav pairs.

Dark humor, a bit graphic, and confusing at times. Read it slowly, refer to the guides in the front and the back, and consider reading it a second time.

I‘ll admit this one took me a fair while to get into (that‘s a LOT of world building to take in) but by the end I was absolutely on board and I‘ll definitely be reading the sequel. Very inventive, ghoulish and odd. I‘ve never read anything going this deep into necromancy before and I enjoyed the trip, and also the cool mix of sci fi and fantasy that you don‘t see much.

#scarathlon #skeletoncrew

Ruthiella I absolutely love this series. Every book (so far) has been wonderfully confusing at first and then it starts to coalesce. Not for everyone, for sure. 6mo

Hi book friends! I got a new phone, found out I couldn't download the litsy app, and suddenly became much worse at keeping it updated. But I have some free time, lets see if we can get caught up on reviews!

Wanting to complete a row in July's #bookspinbingo finally had me read this, which has been sitting on my Libro.fm app after buying it on sale. I was hesitant because I've heard mixed things about the series from trusted reader friends. (1/2)

Tea_and_Starstuff After reading, I can see why friends bounced off, but it worked really well for me! The characters were sometimes glib, but the plot wasn't. Fascinating worldbuilding, and it managed to be both compulsively readable and intriguing complex. A scattering of elements comes together in a satisfying finale, and I immediately wanted to read the sequel. (2/2) 7mo

Finished this week & I‘m still not sure how to rate it so going for so-do. I kept telling myself to stop reading it but then I couldn‘t & got caught up in it. I found it too long & too confusing—like the author just went for the most difficult way to say or do things (like naming characters) & I DID NOT like the ending AT ALL. It did have dark humor & I liked Gideon & a couple of the other characters grew on me. I don‘t think that is enough to ⬇️

DebinHawaii …try the next in the series (even if it‘s a library ebook) but probably not or at least not for a while. Overall too chaotic & muffled for my tastes & there are other books out there I‘m more interested in.🤷🏻‍♀️ #SeriesLove2023 #RushAThon 7mo

Unpopular opinion! I called this one a DNF after 20% read. The reasons why are many. First, it tried to be a blend of Sci-Fi and Fantasy and it didn't work for me. I felt it needed to be pure Fantasy. Second, the world building was lacking and it made the plot stilted. Third, hated the characters. The final nail in the coffin was the plot which was very weak. So many loved this one and I don't understand why. Sigh... Total was of my time!

TheSpineView Needless to say, I will not try to finish at a later date or read anything else in the series. #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 10mo

80 pages in, and this still feels like a chaotic mess. My elder kid likes this series so maybe I'll try to revisit it later, but for now I just am not feeling it.

Nessavamusic I bailed on this too! 12mo
ImperfectCJ @Nessavamusic Glad to know I'm not alone! I've been a lot quicker to bail on books than I used to. It might be that I'm growing jaded and impatient with age, or maybe it's just that I have less time to read after spending most of my day yelling at kids to get off my lawn or complaining about the work ethic of younger generations. (And since sarcasm doesn't always convey well in comments, I should point out that I do neither of those things.) 12mo
Nessavamusic @ImperfectCJ same, if I‘m going to give a book 2 or less stars I try to bail. I do occasionally hate read finish things, especially if I own the book. 😂 12mo
ImperfectCJ @Nessavamusic My teens love when I hate read. For some reason, they get a kick out of seeing me get worked up about books, and apparently it's most amusing when I'm ranting. 12mo

@TheAromaOfBooks This was my #BookChain read for 5th prompt.

claudiuo @TheAromaOfBooks Talking about #BookChain... After reading this book I was stumped as far as prompt 6: title with half as many letters as this book. I love complex characters and characters in this book definitely were that xD But at the same time this book had way too many characters, and they had long names + nick names. That was overwhelming.

I loved the atmosphere but hated the writing style.

I think the plot was decent but the writing style made it feel more confusing than it otherwise would have been.

Anyone have a suggestion for a quick read in the Sword & Sorcery category? I‘d love to finish the fantasy section by the end of year.

For Sci-fi, I read these 2, plus a ton of Ruby Dixon‘s sci-fi romances which don‘t really seem to fit these categories. Might finish 1 more if I get a chance🤷‍♀️

What a strange world we live in... Social media now decides what books go on sale (read: are worthy). That is not a slight on this book, which I've never read. Just an observation.

julesG Weird! 1y
ravenlee Isn‘t this just a variation on bestseller lists? It‘s just something very specific that‘s driving the popularity. 1y
ShyBookOwl @ravenlee Good point. Seems less jarring when you put it that way 1y
ravenlee Not to say it isn‘t weird, but I‘ve always found bestseller lists to be a strange thing. Highlighting and discounting books that are already popular, to make them more popular, based largely on existing publicity efforts and “word of mouth” - so booktok seems like a pretty logical progression to me. 1y
ShyBookOwl @ravenlee Agreed. Litsy is my only social media platform, and things like tiktok seem built upon the premise that ppl have no attention span, which seems counterintuitive to book culture. So there's a clash there that confuses me. When my 14 yr old nephew scrolls tiktok I get an instant migraine, so imagining his peers deciding which books get popular boggles me 😅 Maybe I'd get it if I participated 🤷🏽‍♀️ 1y
