The Bell Jar
The Bell Jar | Sylvia Plath, Sylvia
Plath's only novel, but a famous one, with strong elements of autobiography. It is 1953, and Esther Greenwood has just arrived in New York City: she and eleven others have won a contest, the prize being one month of employment at a famous fashion magazine. But afterwards, depression sets in... [Suggest a different description.]

It‘s so heartbreaking when you realize Sylvia‘s bell jar did in fact descend again. This was a beautiful and heartbreaking look into the ugliness of depression and mental health. This was definitely an emotional ride but one I‘m thankful to have been on.

My first read of 2020 has left me reeling and wishing I could go back in time and read this when I was in college. It‘s heartbreaking but something I couldn‘t put down until I finished it. I don‘t know quite how to put my thoughts on this into coherent words, but let‘s just say this is now on my favorites shelf and I‘ll be checking the audiobook out soon. 5⭐️

Lord, this resonated with me in high school and early college! Everyone around me seemed to have a plan, and there I was with no pull in one particular direction and not wanting to dedicate myself to something just because I could "make a career out of it".

I turned out just fine. ?

And now, for the third time, I'm cozying up with one of my all-time #favorite novels! I read #TheBellJar my senior year of high school, again when I was 25, and now at 30. This journey may be about Esther's struggle and self-discovery, but every time I read it I feel like part of this story is my own. How does one decide what direction to take in life? Can you restart at any time? Why can't I have choices? Commitment and adventure?

Written in the early 60's the author had used a male pseudonym. It's been said to be more of an autobiographical piece which breaks my heart. This amazingly written book follows the challenges of a young poet in the 60s aswell as her never ending battle with mental health. It's unfortunate that the author died of suicide at the age of 30. I saw she had some other publications I plan to look into.

It feels contradictory and somewhat disrespectful to give this book a pick. It‘s a story of such plummeting lows, despair and desperation, of loneliness and confusion, but the writing is incredibly powerful and the tale it tells so insightful. It was only after finishing the book that I Googled Sylvia Plath and discovered The Bell Jar is almost autobiographical. A tragic tale both in fiction and fact. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What Esther thought to herself immediately after electric shock treatment for her depression.

I had to stop reading for a while after this sentence as it really upset me. I can‘t imagine why electric shock treatment was thought of as a good idea. It seems wholly barbaric to me.

LapReader It still happens in Australia. 7mo
Ms_T @LapReader 😞 7mo
Birdsong28 I read this book as part of my Eng lit A level course and had to compare it with another book I chose Girl interrupted as it shows a real experience rather than a fictional experience (I know The Bell Jar is based on her own struggles). Girl was quite upsetting as well as it described treatments but it was well written and needs to be read. 7mo
See All 10 Comments
Ms_T @Birdsong28 It sounds like a book that is uncomfortable to read but should be experienced. I‘ll stack it 😘📚 7mo
batsy I took a course on Plath, while studying in Canada, and one of my classmates who was Aboriginal Canadian and a mature student talked a bit about having lived in reservations and then being subjected to shock therapy for his mental illness and it was one of the most harrowing things I've heard. What it must have been like to live through it 😔😔 7mo
Lea This book totally messed me up the entire time I was reading it and a day or two after. Hit too close to home I guess. 7mo
Ms_T @batsy To read a fictitious version of it is one thing but to hear someone‘s actual account is a whole other ball game. I simply can‘t imagine... 😞 7mo
Ms_T @Lea To read that makes me incredibly sad. 7mo
Centique Its still used in many places. My brother in law recently had some shock therapy for his mental illness and it was reasonably successful and he didn‘t hate it. I think the treatment has changed a lot - and more thought is put into prescribing it (in this country at least) My grandmother had it also in the 1950s which would have been awful 😬 7mo
Ms_T @Centique I‘m sure it‘s much more humane and a lot more considered nowadays. As you say, in the 1950s (the time in which the book is set) must have been dreadful. I‘m glad your BIL felt it was successful. 7mo

I had such high expectations of The Bell Jar, after years of hearing how fantastic it was, and I was convinced there was no way it could possibly live up to the hype… but, of course, it did. The prose was so beautiful! I wanted to throw my gorgeous Faber edition across the room but I couldn‘t, because I was clutching it so hard. Trigger warnings abound, of course.
