The Silver Linings Playbook
The Silver Linings Playbook: A Novel | Matthew Quick
An enchanting first novel about love, madness, and Kenny G. The Silver Linings Playbook is the riotous and poignant story of how one man regains his memory and comes to terms with the magnitude of his wife's betrayal. During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy. When Pat meets the tragically widowed and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year's Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their "contract." All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining. In this brilliantly written debut novel, Matthew Quick takes us inside Pat's mind, deftly showing us the world from his distorted yet endearing perspective. The result is a touching and funny story that helps us look at both depression and love in a wonderfully refreshing way.

Pat Peoples‘ story is uncomfortable in the very best way. He is good hearted, and we get ringside seats to his process of managing a mental health crisis. I‘d call it a medium dark read, though, since the Philly fandom and female friendship aspects mostly lighten the mood. Just like a cloud with Silver Linings! (More real and ultimately better than the movie.)

As someone who has been "silver lining" things a lot recently, both for myself and others, is recently separated, and loves the spirit of Christmas- this was the perfect book to gobble up in 1 day!
I'm a big believer in things happening for a reason and people coming into our lives at particular times- maybe they stay, maybe not, maybe they're romantic partners or not but I think we need to throw our arms and hearts open and spread the love. ?

howlinglibraries Like @megnews, I haven‘t read the book but have family members with bipolar and the representation felt fair to me, and I thought the movie overall was worth seeing! 14mo
sammisho @megnews I don't remember them ever specifying a diagnosis in the book. I kept waiting for them to say it. Was it bipolar? I am a social worker and many of his behaviors reminded me of clients with Traumatic Brain Injuries. 14mo

Wow! This was so much more than I expected.
Today, stories of broken people abound, & drag the reader into that spiral. This one gets you to cheer for decent people trying their best to get some happiness out of their shattered lives.
There‘s lots of humor in this story, none of it mean-spirited.
There‘s also lots of raw emotion, right in the midst of suburbia.
A solid book that gives you all the highs & lows in less than 300 pages.

#Rocktober As a former #PhillyGirl and still a season ticket holder Eagles fan, how could I not choose this quirky story for #lithium. Pat Peoples, who has recently been released from a mental health facility being treated for bipolar disorder, is tested as he navigates family, a separation from his wife, and another frustrating season of Eagles football 🏈 Silver Linings does an excellent job portraying bipolar with honesty & humor. #TBRtemptation post 5! 4 stars on GR with 129,000 ratings! Praised by Justin Cronin & made into a movie with Bradley Cooper & Jennifer Lawrence. Mentally ill Pat has a theory: his life's a movie produced by God. His happy ending is his estranged wife's, Nikki's, return. But no one mentions her, he's pursued by odd Tiffany, his therapist recommends adultery, and Kenny G's hunting him! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
