Mr. Dickens and His Carol
Mr. Dickens and His Carol: A Novel of Christmas Past | Samantha Silva
111 posts | 69 read | 3 reading | 117 to read
A charming, comic, and ultimately poignant story about the creation of the most famous Christmas tale ever written. Its as foggy and haunted and redemptive as the original; its all heart, and I read it in a couple of ebullient, Christmassy gulps. Anthony Doerr, #1 New York Times bestselling author of All The Light We Cannot See A debut novel with the wit of Shakespeare in Love and the evergreen charm of A Christmas Carol For Charles Dickens, each Christmas has been better than the last. But when his newest book is an utter flop, his publishers offer an ultimatum: either he writes a Christmas book in a month, or they will call in his debts, and he could lose everything. Grudgingly, he accepts, but with relatives hounding him for loans, his wife planning an excessively lavish holiday party, and jealous critics moving in for the kill, he is hardly feeling the Christmas spirit. Frazzled and filled with self-doubt, Dickens seeks solace and inspiration in London itself, his great palace of thinking. And on one of his long walks, in a once-beloved square, he meets a young woman who might be just the muse he needs. Over the next few weeks, Eleanor Lovejoy propels Dickens on a Scrooge-like journey that tests everything he believes about generosity, friendship, ambitionand Christmas. Laced with humor, rich historical detail from Dickens life, and clever winks to his work, Samantha Silva's Mr. Dickens and His Carol is an irresistible new take on an adored classic.

I suppose someone who takes Dickens a lot less seriously than I do might enjoy this cozy, sentimental novel around the holidays. I thought it was lame. It didn‘t start out too badly, but as soon as Mrs. Dickens left London with the kids it went downhill and got progressively dumber. I skimmed toward the end and then read the end, to see if it finished well. It didn‘t. 👎🏻

5 star read for me! This was an absolutely charming novel about Charles Dickens and his creation of A Christmas Carol. The author describes it as a playful reimagining of how this beloved Christmas story came to be and the fiction is masterfully blended with plenty of biographical info about his life. It‘s such a beautiful love letter to Charles Dickens! My only regret...I wish I had read it around the holidays.

Jee_HookedOnBookz I loved this too! 7mo

Mr Dickens: If you're looking for a pleasant, charming and an easy Christmas read, this one scores all the points! I enjoyed this overall. 4/5

A Christmas Carol: the perfect Christmas read! Can never get tired of reading it! 5/5

Holidays on Ice: I definitely prefer Calypso. Some stories in this collection were a little too twisted for me. 3.5/5

Have you read any of these books? Did you enjoy it?

I expected something warm, cosy, & perhaps fluffy, but somehow this was more fluff, less warmth. Dickens was a frustrating character in terms of his fictionalised relationship to a muse figure, & I found this aspect trite & overly-sentimental. I wanted more details about his writing process & the publishing industry in the Victorian era but the book was short on that. The lack of the good stuff makes me want to read The Man Who Invented Christmas.

I debated between pick & so-so, but this did not wow me. I truly enjoyed the details of the setting and the literary references. However, I found the character of Dickens very frustrating through much of the story, and I don‘t know enough about the facts of his life to know which parts are accurate. Overall, I went in looking for a heartwarming Christmas story, and I felt it took too long to get to that point.

Daisey I did see another review that mentioned a nonfiction book, so I‘m looking for that next 10mo

Enjoyed this for the most part. Occasionally found characters annoying but that's kinda was the Christmas Carol redemption point. Beautiful descriptions of Victorian England. Liked references to the 'new' traditions such as afternoon tea, and Christmas cards. #winterholidayreads

I'm DNFing this after 110 pages. I know this is meant to be a redemption piece and that he learns a valuable lesson in the end, but dammit, Dickens is such a JERK in the first part of this book (especially to his wife) that I just can't go on. I adore Dickens as an author too much to keep going. 😔 I very rarely leave books unfinished, but being this close to Christmas I'd rather read a better holiday tale-like A Christmas Carol! 💕📚

batsy I should have bailed. Now I'm more that 3/4 in and I feel compelled to see it through :/ I thought Dickens' disregard for his wife once she was out of sight so infuriating... 10mo

A nicely told story the blends mostly fiction with some small details of Dickens life into an account of Dickens writing if “A Christmas Carol”. It is interesting how the story finds his inspiration for all the characters of “A Christmas Carol”.

This was a cute story. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Dickens. But I found myself googling him a lot while I read this. I think I might need to read a biography now.
#25inFive

Trashcanman I have a hate hate relationship with him. Ask @kaye 10mo
Kaye I dont believe anyone on Litsy needs me to tell them you hate Dickens. You‘ve done a pretty good bit of advertising for yourself on that. @trashcanman 10mo
Trashcanman @kaye Listen, I got beef with Dickens. If he and I were in a knife fight, who'd you choose to win? 10mo
See All 23 Comments
JacqMac @Trashcanman @kaye 😂 I had to read David Copperfield for a university class, about 30 years ago. I still haven‘t finished it. I have tried more than once. It‘s my nemesis. It‘s great for making me fall asleep though. 10mo
JacqMac @Trashcanman And you could totally take him in a knife fight. Lol 10mo
Trashcanman Thank you Jacqueline! Yes, I've read 4 of his books. They are pure torture! Torture I say! @kaye and don't see 👁️👁️ to 👁️👁️ on this. 10mo
Kaye Here we go again. 😱 10mo
Kaye George , something tells me that if you pulled a knife on Dickens, he‘d sit down and laugh. He isn‘t the fighting sort. It‘s fine if you don‘t like him. Nobody is asking you to. @Trashcanman 10mo
Trashcanman @kaye OK listen if Dickens and I were going to drown and you could only save one of us, who would you save? 10mo
Kaye I‘ve got you there, George. I can‘t swim . If I jumped in, I‘d drown too. We‘d all 3 drown together. @Trashcanman 10mo
Trashcanman @kaye oh snap! OK Dickens and I have a paper maché contest. Who'd make the better paper maché? 10mo
Kaye I‘m not sure on that because I don‘t know how long that‘s been a “ thing”. Did they do that in the 1800s ? Probably not. Dickens‘ ART was his writing. @Trashcanman 10mo
Trashcanman @kaye OK how about if him and I were both orphans and you had to adopt one of us. Who would you adopt? 10mo
Kaye Neither. I raised 3 kids and one grandson. I‘m too old to adopt anyone else. I think babysitting a goldfish would be more than I want at this point. I just want peace ☮️, quiet 🤫, and space. @Trashcanman 10mo
Trashcanman @kaye you'd leave me to eat government cheese and peanut butter? 😔 10mo
JacqMac @kaye @Trashcanman Who knew Dickens was such a touchy subject? Now I have more reasons to avoid finishing David Copperfield. 😂 10mo
Kaye Oh, @JacqMac ......George cannot abide Dickens and I happen to think he was quite a talented writer. I‘m perfectly ok with him NOT liking Dickens. I‘m not interested in reading all those dusty Russian Classics that he gobbles up, but I don‘t harp at him about them. I‘m glad he found authors he likes. It‘s great ! 10mo
Trashcanman @JacqMac please stay away from his books! 10mo
Trashcanman @kaye I'm saddened that I wouldn't be adopted. I speak my mind on Litsy but in person I'm really quite. And I'm pretty tidy so I could have help with chores. But you blew all that away. No in the mind fantasy I've created I'm eating cheese and feeling unworthy. 10mo
Trashcanman Quiet * 10mo

While not historically accurate, as it is very much a work of fiction, this book was still delightful & put me even more in the holiday spirit. It was very well written, and as a huge Dickens fan, I appreciated it. If you aren‘t familiar with the real history behind “A Christmas Carol”, I would suggest reading “The Man Who Invented Christmas” first & then following up with this novel. I did it, and it made it even more enjoyable 😃

Another hard to review. Loved the period detail & descriptions but:
1. Can't be doing with It was a ghost all along! Apparently I feel like it needs better plotting or I just roll my eyes.
2. A bit too nudge wink on the Christmas Carol references
3. Dickens apparently learns the true meaning of Christmas which is raking in magic money to spend spend spend!
I can see why people love it, I think I'm just a bit old & crusty!
