Here is my November wrap up! I read 22 children‘s books, and 6 books, with half of the Bear and the Nightingale on audiobook. Really proud of myself for getting back into reading after two months of stagnation! Looking forward to December reading! My favorite book out of November is between Grimenna and The Bear and the Nightingale.

The best word to describe this book is enchanting!! Vasilisa lives in the deep Northern woods of Russia, and she can see the chyerti from Russian folklore all around her, especially the winter king and death himself, Morozko. It‘s a bit slower as it starts from the beginning of Vasya‘s life to her teenage years, but picks up at the end. I‘m rushing to the bookstore tomorrow for the second book! This is the first book on my winter tbr.

AlaMich I adored this trilogy! 1w
MadelineMcCrae @AlaMich I‘m so excited to see how the relationship dynamic between Vasya and Morozko plays out! 1w

Of Triton | Anna Banks
post image
Mehso-so

I finally coaxed myself into finishing Of Triton last night! It was an ok young adult series about mermaids. I‘m really not a fan of the whole soulmates but the main character hasn‘t finished high school plot line. What‘s wrong with having a character who‘s in college instead? Some plot choices I didn‘t agree with as well. I‘m not going to read the last book in the series, since it seems unnecessary.

LeafingThroughLife I ended up skipping the third book, too. I read about 50 pages before also determining that it was unnecessary. 2w

At times the information could be a little redundant, but overall a fun read! I hope to read some of the other books from this mythology series.

My friend lent me the first two books of this series, but it took me so long to get through the first one. It was generally a pretty entertaining young adult romance involving the authors version of mermaids. It wasn‘t cringey or anything, I‘m just not a fan of books set during high school. However, the cliff hanger at the end was insane! And I‘m very jealous of Emma‘s encounter with Titanic (the scene from the book in the photo).

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Graphic Novel | Jane Austen, Seth Grahame-Smith

Bailedbailed

I had to DNF it. The art just was not to my liking. I think I‘m used to reading graphic novels in color, so the black and white felt dull. The characters all looked very similar to each other as well, so I was constantly trying to remember who was who while reading. Just going to stick to the novel on this one.

CaroPi Ohh too bad.. I was thinking on get it because I really enjoy the novel 4mo
MadelineMcCrae @CaroPi I think it‘s a great companion read if you like the art. Hopefully, you‘ll enjoy it more than I did! 4mo
CaroPi @MadelineMcCrae thanks but looking carefully I also don't like the art that much. Is not the black and white but in general... Already had other ideas in my head. But was nice to see it! (edited) 4mo
BookBr Black and white can work if it‘s done well, but this looks more like a colouring book! All outlines — I can see why it‘d be difficult to distinguish character and scenery. Too bad tho. 4mo

The Terror: A Novel | Dan Simmons
post image
Pickpick

Sir John Franklin and Captain Crozier, with 135 men, make an ill fated attempt to find the northwest passage in the Arctic north. Their ships became trapped in the ice and they are never heard from again. This is where fact becomes fiction as something sinister begins to hunt them, one by one. I greatly enjoyed The Terror, but I listened to the abridged version. I think I would have DNF‘d the longer version based on other reviews.

I listened to Drowned Country on audio, and I have to say at the beginning I was a bit disappointed by a certain sudden change even if it was meant for character growth. Tesh‘s world building is lush and dark, just as a fairytale should be. But I wasn‘t totally convinced of the romance due to how short both books were, and I wish there was more focus on the mythical creatures. Overall, I would say both are picks that were close to being so-so.

I can‘t believe it took me so long to finish The Magnolia Sword! I think I started off skeptical but by the end I was so hooked and invested in the story. Sherry Thomas put so much thought and love into her research of the 400‘s AD China for the backdrop, and every scene was action packed without sacrificing character growth. There were times the characters felt a tad bland, but often the plot and writing made up for it. And that romance!😍
