The Dry
The Dry | Jane Harper
Who really killed the Hadler family? Amid the worst drought to ravage Australia in a century, it hasn't rained in small country town Kiewarra for two years. Tensions in the community become unbearable when three members of the Hadler family are brutally murdered. Everyone thinks Luke Hadler, who committed suicide after slaughtering his wife and six-year-old son, is guilty. Policeman Aaron Falk returns to the town of his youth for the funeral of his childhood best friend, and is unwillingly drawn into the investigation. As questions mount and suspicion spreads through the town, Falk is forced to confront the community that rejected him twenty years earlier. Because Falk and Luke Hadler shared a secret, one which Luke's death threatens to unearth. And as Falk probes deeper into the killings, secrets from his past and why he left home bubble to the surface as he questions the truth of his friend's crime.

Not sure what you call an audio pageturner?

The above image made me picture Eric Bana as Falk, although my sister pointed out that he was probably miscast as Falk was supposed to be visibly at odds with his drought-stricken hometown in the Australian outback, having been a red-head who had never played football or cricket. Nevertheless, looking forward to the film.

A good example of outback noir. Apparently it‘s a thing.

CarolynM I thought Bana was horribly miscast and the film didn‘t do the book justice. Oh well😒 Outback noir is definitely a thing. There are some good ones out there. 2w

Love it when you trust an author enough to just take the ride without much thought. Jane Harper and Tana French are my number one mystery writers. I will read anything and everything they write. Just one more Jane Harper to go until I‘ve actually done that too.

I am in a heat wave in the west coast reading about Australia also going through a heat wave. I can relate to that for sure. The book was fine and full of mystery. I liked it but probably won‘t remember it after a book or two. Three days is how fast I read it.

Finished this one while eating breakfast, had to know what happened. I think the best part of this book was the setting. You can just feel the heat, the dust and drynesses as you read this novel. Well written; I preferred the last half of the book.

CoverToCoverGirl So atmospheric, Australia was the driving force in this book. Loved it! 8mo

Set in a small Australian town during an epic drought (the dry), multiple murders cause total mistrust of pretty much everyone. Aaron Falk, a federal investigator living in Melbourne, returns to this hometown that he and his father left years ago. Told in two timelines, we learn that so many people have secrets that see the light of day (or not) during the investigation. I heard that you could feel the heat…you do.

Just finished and I really enjoyed this read! Based in Australia, a struggling town comes to grips with a murder and suspicion from a past murder. The characters were interesting and each played a vital role in the discoveries. I was drawn to the Authors writing style in the first page which is rare for me. I found this at the Old Book Barn in Forsyth, Illinois. Great Read! Now onto another Jane Harper…The Lost Man.

Book 92

I listened to The Dry. It's a detective story about two cold murder cases. It is not my favorite Jane Harper novel; the setting was less integral to the plot than I'd hoped. It wasn't exceedingly engaging, and the characters weren't compelling. Maybe it would have been better to read than listen to. ⭐⭐⭐

But I‘m persevering!

BarbaraTheBibliophage Glad you‘ve got your reading mojo back! Sorry the book isn‘t so great. 😎 (edited) 1y
Magpiegem @BarbaraTheBibliophage the book is really good, it‘s just really find child murder hard to read about even if it‘s fictional. So I find myself really tense when I‘m reading it xx 1y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Yeah, I feel the same. This was well-written, with several good twists. The dark secrets surrounding the 20 year old mystery subplot hurt my heart. Finished in 2 days! This sucked me in and I devoured it. It was a good mystery (well two) about a cop called back to his hometown to face the murder of a friend. The cop is also hiding secrets of his own and isn‘t welcome back to town. This is set in my gf home country of Australia so I was excited. I feel that the country & landscape itself was a character. Recommended for a mostly non grisly crime novel.

I love this book so much, it was the novel I chose for my #LitMail around-the-world book club, the author writes the Aussie bush so well and the movie definitely lived up to the job of making the drought feel like it‘s own character. 8.5/10🙌
