The Remains of the Day
The Remains of the Day | Kazuo Ishiguro
The Remains of the Day is a profoundly compelling portrait of the perfect English butler and of his fading, insular world postwar England. At the end of his three decades of service at Darlington Hall, Stevens embarks on a country drive, during which he looks back over his career to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving a great gentleman. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlingtons greatness and graver doubts about his own faith in the man he served.A tragic, spiritual portrait of a perfect English butler and his reaction to his fading insular world in post-war England. A wonderful, wonderful book.

Happy November everyone! I hope your month is fabulous! Here are the #Two4Tuesday questions for today.

My answers:
1. The book needs to be set prior to 1950. If it is newer it doesn't feel historical because I remember it. So dating myself here.
2. The Remains of the Day reminds me of fall because it feels like an ending of an era and love. Fall is an ending of warmer weather and the transition to cold. This book is a transition.

The novel tells, in first-person narration, the story of Stevens, an English butler who has dedicated his life to the loyal service of Lord Darlington (who is recently deceased, and whom Stevens describes in increasing detail in flashbacks). As the work progresses, two central themes are revealed: Lord Darlington was a Nazi sympathizer; and Stevens is in love with Miss Kenton, the housekeeper at Darlington Hall, Lord Darlington's estate.

This was my second by Ishiguro and I didn‘t like it as much. (First was Never Let Me Go.)
I found the very proper sounding language of the MC quite off putting, and his professional disconnect was actually disturbing.
But I feel like it‘s a classic and I‘m glad I read it. Also it was my #bookspin- fortuitous drawing as I was already halfway through it.

Pictured behind the book: the first plants in my new garden space! #litsycrafters

TheAromaofBooks Great progress, both on books and gardens!! I spent the day outside yesterday as well!! Things are coming together!! 6mo
Tamra Definitely try the film with Hopkins & Thompson! The MC‘s professionalism/distance is his defense mechanism against the vagaries of life and the heart. It‘s his method of controlling his small sphere. 6mo
Soubhiville @Tamra and @UwannaPublishme I will watch it, thank you for the recommendation! 6mo
Tamra @Soubhiville it‘s an all time favorite for both me & hubby. We watch it annually. 6mo
alysonimagines I can echo the movie rec! I saw the movie years ago, before I read the book. Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson are pitch perfect in their roles. (I liked picturing their faces when I read the book later on.) I love the book as well, but I think the movie is more accessible, as it can convey more than the MC is willing to show, so you might enjoy it more than the book. 🙂 6mo

14-20 Feb 2022 (audiobook)
I absolutely loved this story told by a slightly unreliable (or just deluded) narrator who served as a butler in a great English house between the wars. As he recounts his years of service he comes to the realisation that the man he had served may not have deserved such loyalty and devotion.
This book raises the question of what makes a good life. For me, the answer is family and friends - not devotion to work.

An elegant book with a plot simple enough (an English butler, on a road trip, reminiscing on his past thirty years of “dignified” service to a controversial lord and “gentleman”) but which disguises a deeper undertow of meaning: an interrogation of the idea of one‘s allegiance to something that may not deserve such. It is the butler‘s roundabout attempts to hide these truths from himself, even up to the last page, which makes this story so sad.

Book 152

I listened to The Remains of the Day, a well-done novel with a classical feel, by Kazuo Ishiguro. It is a slow-paced dive into Stevens, a butler in England in the early to mid-1900s. His character is so stiff and...butlery, but you warm up to him. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yes, the narrator‘s voice in my head was Anthony Hopkins throughout the entirety of this novel. It‘s unavoidable if, like me, you saw the iconic Merchant Ivory adaptation first. Ishiguro is so good - the writing is like a chesterfield sofa with buttery old leather that you just sink into. The story of an English butler who aspires to the very best of his profession while perhaps missing out on his one chance at love is elegant and heartbreaking.

Nute Excellent review! This is one of my most favorite books, and the movie adaptation with Anthony Hopkins was spot on! 11mo

This is a beautifully written book capturing the emotions (or lack thereof) of one man‘s incapacity to live his life for himself because his life is his work and it demands he honorably serve another man. So many beautiful words to slow down and think about.

I feel I may be one of the last people who hadn‘t read this already! What a beautiful book. It is a talented author who can write something that seems so simple and yet tells you something profound. It‘s like the magicians sleight of hand. You‘re busy looking at the wand and meanwhile a rabbit has appeared in his other hand 🤯 ⬇️

Centique Here we are taking a simple car ride with an elderly butler indulging in recollections of former grandeur - and yet as we look beyond what we are being told, a far richer and more complex narrative is presenting itself. So much to mull over here, and now I have to watch the movie! 2y

Oh my. What a tour de force! A masterclass in top quality literature! This is nothing less than exquisite. It's hilarious (the birds & bees scene) & it's clever (the slow reveal of truth) & it's poignantly, infuriatingly, heartbreakingly sad. How a thing done with such sublime subtlety can pack such an immense emotional punch is an absolute wonder. There are so many layers here, so much to unpack that ... cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️

readingjedi From above: ...a repeat reading is almost obligatory. So much of this book lingers in my mind - the nostalgia, the obsolete way of life, the missed opportunities, the denial, the regret... What an absolute corker of a novel, an utter delight and I'm absolutely obsessed & in love with it! 2y

This is a remarkably restrained piece of writing, and in this way it‘s classic Ishiguro. This examination of a world and time in irreversible decline is a story where much more happens between the lines, than on them. It‘s a story about the distance that often sits between our interior and exterior worlds. It‘s a story that asks us to imagine how life might have been different, and reminds us how difficult an imagination that is to have.

BarbaraBB One of my all time favorites 2y
Centique I have this on hold at the library so hoping I get to it soon. There‘s quite a lot of holds on it for an older book, I was surprised! 2y

After hearing so many good things about this book, I had to pick it up. I am not quite sure what the reason for the popularity is. The writing is very intriguing. However, I wasn't drawn to the protagonist who seemed very superficial with no character arc. Except for a few mins almost at the end, the story was rather dull

Brilliant! I finished the book today and immediately watched the movie. Of course Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson are both wonderful and give heart breaking performances, but all the subtle nuances of the book are not quite achieved. I was also surprised that a rather crucial passage by Ms. Kenton is omitted, uttered by her at the end of the book. As usual, no matter how well done the movie is, the book is simply better! Strongly recommend 🤩

And there‘s my #bookspin done! It feels good to get this off the TBR, even though I didn‘t love it. It took about 70 pages to get really into it, but it was immersive. An English butler reflects on his years of service to determine if he‘s truly satisfied with the life he‘s lived. Definitely an interesting perspective of pre-war England, but not worth a reread for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Unlike my last review, this one seems to be a book that finds a way to be admirable at any time. A couple decades ago, I imagine it was read as an emotive recollection of times changed, love lost, and emotions suppressed. Today, readers will focus on the lament of complicit inaction. It‘s a layered book with pinpointedly ornate style—a rich read in many ways.

atla This really makes me want to reread this one. I‘ve been noticing the theme of complicit inaction in many of the short stories I‘ve read lately. 2y
Christoffer I imagine this might be different from those. To me, the theme worked because it was slowly evoked. You could sense, but Mr. Stevens‘s narration focuses on other ideas. Thus, the theme lets you discover it rather than hammering you right away. It becomes obvious, but it rewards the reader who‘s keen to it quickly. 2y

Thanks for the tag @erzascarletbookgasm ! 😘

I read this book recently and loved it, but I‘ve never seen the film.

2. I had a private yoga lesson today - loved it, and I feel amazing now after having a rather grumpy, grouchy week!

I prefer Place in the Sun in France and Spain to those in Florida / the Caribbean - the houses are much more quirky! @Book_Fiend_Melissa (edited) 2y

MsMelissa 😂😂😂 Do you get House Hunters or House Hunters International? The International version is often in the Mediterranean, so I prefer it to the original. I don‘t know about you, but I get slightly disappointed when the searchers have a low budget. I like to see the the massive houses 😂 2y
squirrelbrain I think we do get House Hunters, but I haven‘t watched it much @Book_Fiend_Melissa - I quite like the smaller houses - slightly more attainable! As if....🤣 2y
squirrelbrain It was a full moon on Monday @Caroline2 - that‘s what my husband is blaming my grumpiness on anyway! He thought he might find me in the garden howling at midnight.... 🤪 2y
Caroline2 😆 There‘s defo something in the wind this wk!!! 🌓 least Friday tomorrow at last!!!!! 😅 2y
Cosmos_Moon Ooooo! I WISH I had more time to go to yoga classes. I miss it so much. Full time work and 2 kids suck my time 🧐 I love them, though 🥰 happy Thursday! 2y

The brief synopsis of this book almost put me off reading it, but I‘m so glad I did. Peter Beech put it perfectly ‘It‘s about how class conditioning can turn you into your own worst enemy, making you complicit in your own subservience‘, tragically Stevens only really begins to truly understand the impact of this and admit it to himself once it is all too late.

Cathythoughts I loved the movie. Nice arty cover 👍🏻❤️ 2y

📖 The Remains of the Day (tagged)

🖊 Sally Rooney and Marilynne Robinson

🎥 Romeo + Juliet

🎤 Radiohead, RHCP, The Racontuers (already used Ryan Adams for A or he would be first)

🎶 Raising the Dead (Johnny Flynn), Red Eye (Vance Joy), River (Natalie Merchant), The Rock Show (Blink-182), Romeo & Juliet (but only The Killers version because omg Brandon Flowers‘ voice) Rosebud (Ryan Adams)

Ok I think I‘m done. 😂

LitStephanie Which is your favorite R&J movie? 2y
sprainedbrain @LitStephanie Claire Danes and Leo DiCaprio! 2y
LitStephanie @sprainedbrain, I like that one, too, non-traditional as it is. I love the religious imagery showing the hypocrisy and the sped up scenes to give a giddy sense of things careening out of control. 2y

I can‘t believe I‘ve not read this before now....

What an amazing book.

The writing is so beautiful and the sad, pathetic character of Stevens is so wonderfully drawn, it feels more like a biography than fiction.

I want to read it again already and I *never* re-read books.

Also... #covercrush.

TrishB I‘ve not read! 2y
squirrelbrain Have you seen the film @TrishB ? I haven‘t, but my husband says it‘s amazing. 2y
BarbaraBB This review makes me want to read the book again too. I was so moved by it. You must read it @TrishB 😀 2y

erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve not seen this cover before. I should read this too, since I loved Never Let Me Go. 2y
squirrelbrain I loved Never Let Me Go too Jessie @erzascarletbookgasm. This is very different though, and I think I might like this one more.... 2y
Caroline2 Yeah, the film is lovely with Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. 💖 2y
KarenUK Both film and book are sooooogood! 💕 2y
TrishB I never watch films before books (very rarely watch films!) so I haven‘t seen. Sounds like I should get round to reading 😁 @BarbaraBB 2y
Billypar Absolutely agree! I could sympathize with Stevens' views on 'bantering' 😅 Those parts cracked me up, but I was in tears near the end. 2y
squirrelbrain Absolutely, @billypar! I completely agree with his thoughts on bantering! 2y
LeahBergen I loved this book (and yes, that cover!). 2y

No. I can‘t do it. I can‘t stand the way the butler speaks. Life is too short and I won‘t spend another page like this. Bailing on this one 😩

A very strong character study of a butler at the end of his esteemed career. The Remains of the Day certainly won‘t be for everyone, but it was for me. Highly recommended for the patient reader/listener. Overall rating: 4.38 stars

Bradleygirl Kazuo Ishiguro always delivers, after a slow build, usually with extreme heartbreak 💔 3y

Day 7
Seven books that left a deep impression on me. #7days7books

"Why should one not enjoy in a light-hearted sort of way stories of ladies and gentlemen who fall in love and express their feelings for each other, often in most elegant phrases?"

A fantastic work of literary fiction!

readordierachel Why indeed? I need to read this! 3y
Tanisha_A @readordierachel I am 💯% sure you will like it. 🤗 3y

What is the point of worrying oneself too much about what one could or could not have done to control the course one's life took? Surely it is enough that the likes of you and I at least try to make our small contribution count for something true and worthy. And if some of us are prepared to sacrifice much in life in order to pursue such aspirations, surely that in itself, whatever the outcome, cause for pride and contentment.
