4:50 from Paddington | Agatha Christie
The Queen of Mystery has come to Harper Collins! Agatha Christie, the acknowledged mistress of suspense creator of indomitable sleuth Miss Marple, meticulous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and so many other unforgettable characters brings her entire oeuvre of ingenious whodunits, locked room mysteries, and perplexing puzzles to Harper Paperbacks. In 4:50 From Paddington, a woman in one train witnesses a murder occurring in another passing one and only Miss Marple believes her story."

The inaugural read for the #GoldenAgeCrimeClub inspired me to reread more Christie. I really enjoyed this whodunnit. Miss Marple has to enlist the help of the remarkable Lucy Eyelesbarrow in her investigation. It all starts when Mrs. McGillicuddy witnesses a murder on a passing train.

I‘m using this for #pop23 (text only on cover) AND I thought I‘d tag along with @CBee β€˜s #TBRTarot and use this for the January promt β€œStarts with a number”.

CBee Nice! I‘ll add you to my tag list 😊😊 2mo

πŸ“– 1-27-23 || My second Christie and just my first Miss Marple. I was a little disappointed that we didnβ€˜t see more of Miss Marple herself in this one. This was my first Miss Marple, and while I like Poirot more, this was still good. And as usual I was no where close to guessing who did it.

Finished this during last weekend. I love Miss Marple. An interesting premise, a lot of focus on red herrings. The only concern is the amount of statements about how old Miss Marple is, including from her. I hope Christie doesn‘t kill her off at the end of her series.

Elspeth McGillicuddy is not given to hallucinations. Or is she? After she boards the Paddington Station train & becomes a witness to an apparent murder, no one believes her but her friend, Miss Jane Marple.
Christy holds all the cards close to her chest until the final reveal. Her characters were fascinating and the plot was nicely paced. I look forward to reading more of her novels and recommend this book to those who love mysteries.

I just couldn‘t resist another reread of one of the finest Miss Marple books from Dame Agatha. Plus, I received this gorgeous edition for Xmas. I‘m so glad they‘re bringing out books in matching editions, Murder On The Orient Express must have sold really well. Mrs McGillicuddy is traveling on a train at Xmas when she witnesses a murder in a passing train. When no one believes her, she turns to her friend, Jane Marple, for help. #christiecrimeclub

I know I really liked my last one, but I think this might be my favorite Agatha Christie entirely. It‘s got everything: trains, doddering old ladies, English country estates, elaborate wills and inheritances, precocious schoolboys, poison, servants, Scotland Yard mucking things up, and of course murder. Whodunit is a little beside the point, but it‘s so much fun I almost don‘t care. Only two Marples left in my reread!

This is my first Miss Marple, and I just love her as a character. Christie's sense of humor really shines through. As to the narrative, when comparing it to, say, And Then There Were None, which was published 18 years prior, this book is markedly more enlightened. The prose is also much stronger. As to the mystery, the clues-to-story ratio is not great. Plenty of red-herring foreshadowing; not so much in the way of foreshadowing the final reveal.

MayJasper Ooh I'm trying to remember the name of the female witness. Is it Macgillycuddy? 4y

This was my first ever audio book. My mom likes audio so I thought I‘d give it a try and I see a lot of Littens go the audio route. I enjoyed the story but I really had a hard time keeping track of characters because the narrator was an older British woman I keep picturing everyone that way. I don‘t know if I‘ll be doing more audio in the future. I will likely buy this book and read it again. Does anyone else struggle with the audio format?

CampbellTaraL I do! The chronic noise of someone talking in my ear drives me batty. But, I've found nonfiction and literary books are doable when I want to do yard work, exercise, or crochet. I'm not sure what exactly it is about those types of books that works for me. 5y
Graywacke I listen to a lot of audio, but I also need to be very selective. Some things work really well, and some not all. Narrators, style and complexity all affect whether it works for me or not. 5y
Graywacke @taraWritesSci nonfiction works best for me too. Closer to, say, NPR, the better. (edited) 5y
See All 8 Comments
CampbellTaraL @Graywacke Oh yeah! NPR podcasts are about the only ones I can tolerate. The Pulse, for example, audio scripted like that is great. 5y
ElenaBaer I am not a fan of audio books. I have my own thoughts as to the way a character speaks. Not just accent but tone. For me it‘s like watching the movie version of a book! 5y
Liatrek @ElenaBaer Yes, me too! I think that‘s why I struggled with it. 5y
Liatrek @taraWritesSci @Graywacke Maybe I will try a non fiction book next time. 5y
DivineDiana I like that I can listen to audiobooks and do other things at the same time, but I agree it‘s all about the choice of book. Too many characters can be a problem. Something light or a thriller works best! 5y

Decided on audiopuzzling instead of colouring. Colouring meant having to get up, find my pencils etc and the book, puzzling was just picking up my iPad. Less pain for the win!πŸ‘ I really love the Dame Agatha audiobooks, they‘re done so well. You can really see the story as they narrate it. Doing puzzles on the iPad is so much easier than real pieces, no worries about losing a piece off the table & lots of choices. #audiopuzzlingforthewin

This was my 2nd Miss Marple book, and I think I may have liked it more than the first! Very interesting characters, what you thought you knew was constantly changing, and while Miss Marple was more in the periphery of the story, she still played an integral part throughout. I also really like Emilia Fox's narration and would recommend on audio.

An excellent Christie mystery and I didn't see that one coming. Miss Marple isn't my favorite Christie sleuth (that would be Poirot) but she does such a good job of directing everything here. I adore Mrs. McGillicuddy and the two schoolboys who pop up at Rutherford Hall during the course of the story.

Emilia Fox is an excellent narrator of Christie mysteries.
