Haven't done any language learning all week but glad to get back into the groove and why not in the hot sun 🌞
Great fun, perfectly read by Stephen Fry. I read Sherlock Holmes a lot as a young person, I‘m not as much in love now as I was then. But it‘s great comfort reading (and listening!).

Day 239.
Here I will note 365 books (or as many as I will have before I get tired) that have shaped my taste in literature. No explanations, no reviews. Just the cover of the book.
I do not challenge anyone. You are all welcome to take part.
Classic Sherlock Holmes novel which mixes all the things we love about him with the more than questionable attitudes of the time.
Much better transitioning in this one. I wasn't left feeling like I had whiplash with the drastic changes in scenery the way Study in Scarlet did.
I finished this just in time to go see a stage resting of The Sign of the Four tonight! It‘s a good book, but it was very racist. I understand that it‘s a sign of the times and all, but very racist. I liked the plot and the story telling, but I have to give it 3⭐️
I have to say Dr. Watson cracks me up. Oh, I adore his character. 🤗
This was another very interesting read about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Through their journey in discovering the meaning behind the Sign of the Four and the lost treasure, I laughed and explored all theories along side them.
A must read for any true crime and mystery fan. A bit dragging at times but overall great story telling.
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Another brilliant Holmes and Watson adventure. Like a Study in Scarlet it's something that I've come back to time and again over the years.
Loved this little mystery set in London and yet having prolific connections to India particularly Awadh which is where I hail from!
#OutstandingOctober been busier than usual this week
3) 1 audiobook
4) 6 1/2 hours total

Warning - angry, sorry not sorry... I can not condone this. My issues lie with the plot which is heavily influenced by the British Imperialist setting. The exoticism & generalization of the East enforced by the West's othering agenda is all over this. Full review/rant on #Goodreads
Honestly somewhat bland as far as Holmes stories go. I kept thinking, when will the intrigue come in... and then it ended.
A novel I had not read. I think Sherlock Holmes is always a good choice. I really like the Watson and Holmes characters as individuals as well as their friendship.
A good read, this second Sherlock Holmes story has it all: a mystery, murders, a treasure, a damsel in need of assistance, talk about Sherlock's cocaine addiction, some bad racist talk. Now I know why they're called Adventures and not just Mysteries. I enjoyed it but not a lot so not a strong pick but still one.
Another square on my #BookSpinBingo card in a strange month with less reading than I wanted and still haven't finished my book spins.
I find this not as enjoyable as A Study In Scarlet or the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. There‘s a missing treasure, poison darts, a one wooden-leg suspect, & Dr Watson fell in love! Some racists remarks/portrayal which I frowned upon, decent mystery, good characterisation. The most memorable part is Holmes‘ use of cocaine in the very beginning, said to ‘stimulate his brain‘ as he was bored with no cases.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another great Sherlock Holmes story! This is the one that Holmes‘s cocaine addiction is first discussed, and Watson was not happy about it. The mystery was very involved. Now the only thing I did not like was that it does read as racist in parts and there is a slightly boring part when Holmes is looking for a boat. It‘s still a good pick. #novelwatchingcrew #NWC
Recommended by a friend because it was recommended to read Sherlock Holmes books for this month's #NovelWatchingCrew (#NWC) book club reads. So again me and my Bingos :) I like to amend them to my benefit!

Another great read. I love these characters so much! I am falling in love with Sherlock again from a different perspective than I did watching the BBC Sherlock whom I loved as well.
Switched this from “bookish book club pick“ to just “book club pick“

“A wondrous subtle thing is love, for here were we two, who had never seen each other before that day, between whom no word or even look of affection had ever passed, and yet now in an hour of trouble our hands instinctively sought for each other.“
- Watson

Ah the simple truth! I just love this man!
#NovelWatchingCrew (#NWC)
So, I want to read several: Study in Scarlet (which I already read), Sign of the Four (which I am working on), Adventure of Sherlock Holmes (next), Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and Hounds of Baskerville
I suck at riddles! I have no clue!
#NovelWatchingCrew (#NWC)
Just downloaded this one from that Free Books App :) It will be my second Sherlock Holmes book for my #NovelWatchingCrew (#NWC) book club! I am excited to star this tomorrow :)
The weather is getting colder, which means I finally get to snuggle with Jasmine again!! 😻 She only seems to stay on my lap when the temperature drops below 15°C. 😂
Just completed The Sign of the Four (1890), also called The Sign of Four, is the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories featuring the fictional detective. This is the second Conan Doyle book I have read this far and have to say I am enjoying it thoroughly.
Another enjoyable Sherlock Holmes story. I am so glad I finally started reading these.
Another excellent Sherlock mystery! 🔍 (Although it is, unfortunately, of its time. In other words: quite racist.)

Better written than the last book. Feels a little padded in places.
As the second Sherlock Holmes book I feel Conan Doyle is starting to find his feet now, am definitely looking forward to the next one! Loved how the story is all neatly pulled together at the end when we find out the back story and various parts fall into place but still having the smaller investigatory elements picked out along the way 😊
In this novella, Mary Morstan comes to Holmes seeking help in determining who has been sending her a pearl every year after her father's presumed death. The case unfolds as a story of hidden treasure, greed, intrigue, and murder set against the backdrop of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and in the environs of London. Loved the back story of the crime and the thrill of the chase!

This is the one on which Mary Morstan is introduced

I watched the show before reading the book and I found the shows and movie to be better than this book. Without giving too many spoilers I feel like it didn't give enough details for the story that unfolded to make sense.
"He appeared to be in a state of nervous exaltation. I have never known him so #brilliant. He spoke on a quick succession of subjects,—on miracle-plays, on medieval pottery, on Stradivarius violins, on the Buddhism of Ceylon, and on the war-ships of the future,—handling each as though he had made a special study of it." And another (from The Valley of Fear): "Brilliant, Watson. You are scintillating this morning." #QuotsyMay18
“How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”
#QuotsyMay18 #impossible
Once again, I couldn't choose just one! Sherlock Holmes was often #restless. “I cannot live without brain-work. What else is there to live for?...What is the use of having powers, doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them? Crime is commonplace, existence is commonplace, and no qualities save those which are commonplace have any function upon earth.” #QuotsyMay18
After 6 weeks of calligraphy classes, this is my first #quote project. Not great (I see all the mistakes), but a good start.
Just read this again for a reading Sherlock book club.
Hotel reading. #sherlock #prettycover
I‘d love to just lounge around and keep reading this. But I suppose I better go start my day instead. #conferenceroomblues
Trying to catch up on my Sherlock Holmes 2018 reading goals!
“I am the last and highest court of appeal in detection. When Gregson, or Lestrade, or Athelney Jones are out of their depths—which, by the way, is their normal state—the matter is laid before me. I examine the data, as an expert, and pronounce a specialist‘s opinion. I claim no credit in such cases. My name figures in no newspaper. The work itself, the pleasure of finding a field for my #peculiar powers, is my highest reward.”
#quotsyJan18
A bored Holmes tends to crave his #seven percent solution of cocaine (easily obtained from the chemist but abhorred by the disapproving Watson). #NovemberByTheNumbers
Apparently I should be nicer about editing errors because even Arthur Conan Doyle was prone to them....! The Sign of the Four was my #NovemberByTheNumbers book for today so, of course, I had to re-read it. I forgot the extraordinary ode to cocaine use in the first chapter and how poetic and philosophical Holmes gets during the pursuit (but I do wish the various quotes were translated, lazy, I know!). Fantastic and highly recommended, always. 😊
#NovemberByTheNumbers FOUR! This required a scouring of ALL the shelves before the brain kicked in and now I‘m off to re-read 😊😊😊😊
