I cried while listening to this episode.

“My go-to quote after the fire was from Gone With The Wind: “I can't think about that now. I'll think about that tomorrow. “ Although I feel uprooted, I will find my Tara again.“

If you need a reminder of the important things in life (like I was today) - this is a good listen.

Nashville here we coming. I have three hours to read uninterrupted.

Bakingbookworm I‘m so happy I can read in the car now. Tomorrow I‘ll have four hours in the car. My biggest decision will be choosing the audiobook of The Help or finishing Jeffrey Archer‘s upcoming book Nothing Ventured. That‘s a good ‘problem‘ to have. 😉. Happy reading! 1w

I spent two months reading this book section by section between other books. Overall, i enjoyed it very much. The writing is detailed and the characters come to life with their individual personalities. Of course, there is a lot of casual racism included in the book, but that was the way things were in this period, and i don‘t fault the author for capturing the sentiment of the day. Not sure if i loved or hated the ending.

I am enjoying this story of Scarlett and the Civil War from the confederate perspective, but occasionally the author throws in a line like this and i don‘t know what to do:

“Her kind black face sad with the uncomprehending sadness of a monkey‘s face.”

THAT IS REALLY HOW IT ENDS?

I can‘t even explain my feelings for this book. So well-written and powerful, but the racism is appalling. Scarlett is infuriatingly stupid and selfish but also so strong. Poor weak Melly is the best of them all. I feel like the book is pro-confederacy, but I also wonder if Mitchell wasn‘t trying to show just how backwards it was.

I‘m very conflicted, but I loved this novel, despite the end.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#1001books

Ashley_Nicoletto Isn‘t it great? I still think about it. I imagine I might reread it someday? It has such a fantastic cast of characters. And no matter how infuriating Scarlet is, she really made it through some shit. 2mo
sprainedbrain @Ashley_Nicoletto I think I will reread it someday, too... I think there‘s probably a lot that I missed. Just an amazingly complex book. Yes, I love Scarlett for her strength and endurance, even though she made me crazy. 😂 2mo

BarbaraBB Great review. Those horrible characters will stay with you forever! 2mo
phyhill I think all the horrible bits would be easier to digest if Margaret Mitchell had actually lived through the Civil War. When I was a teenager, I thought it was a really old book and was shocked when I found out when it was written...closer in time to the Civil Rights Movement than the Civil War. 2mo

Confession: I have never had any desire to read GWTW (or watch the movie). I decided I was going to tackle it this year as one of my #1001books for 2019.

I started it last night on audio, and I am SO HOOKED. Already into Part II and I‘m struggling to make myself read my other books.

God‘s nightgown... all the heart-eyes. 😍

BookDragonNotWorm I love this one, but it's one of the rare instances where I like the movie better. 2mo
Godmotherx5 I started it as a read-a-long with The Book Cougars @chris.wolak and @ReadingEnvy Unfortunately, I fell behind but I‘m still intrigued. Halfway through the audio at this point. Enjoy it! 2mo

HKGirl YES. I never had a desire to read it either, but some here on Litsy (her handle escapes me at the moment) started a read along, and I thought "Why not?" And then I was hooked. So good. So much more than I expected it to be. 2mo

HOTPock3tt This is one of my moms favorite books... she loves the book and the movie so I grew up watching the movie with her (or at least being in the room) every single year it came on TV (every Easter I think 🤔) and it STILL has never held an appeal for me personally 🤔 Glad to hear you are enjoying it!!! I think I‘m still not there yet 😅lol! (edited) 2mo
sprainedbrain @HOTPock3tt I think if I had grown up watching the movie that often I would be the same! To be honest, I‘m still not sure I will watch the movie. I‘m sort of ashamed to admit it, but classic movies of that type/era really never have done anything for me. 😬 2mo
HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain Me either. I think it‘s the era. It‘s never done much for me either. (My mom is just addicted to pretty much ALL classic novels!! 🤣) But I‘m glad to hear that the book is so addictive, it makes me think maybe it deserves the hype it‘s always getting 🤔 2mo

How do you review this?

I want to go straight back to the beginning and start reading it again! Even though Scarlett is a piece of work, I loved her determination, her relationships, the conversations, & experiencing the oh-so-rapidly-changing world through her eyes. And it‘s made me want to read contemporary writing from the Reconstruction era, through other eyes (suggestions pls?)

RachelO I‘d expected racism, of course - but hadn‘t realised the scale of it, or the impact of hearing it from the narrator, rather than the characters.

This was a holiday read for me, which is obviously the way to go with chunksters. It‘s made me want to dive into some mord of the books I‘ve been putting off because of their size.
3mo
Caroline2 I love this book too. 💗 3mo

Mdargusch One of my all time favorite books! Rereading this recently the racism really made me cringe. 3mo
Cathythoughts Well done !!!! I saw the movie many many years ago... it‘s long 👍🏻 3mo
Cinfhen I liked this one (sort of) but getting through it, was a bit of a struggle and some parts really did make me squirm. The racism was very uncomfortable. I‘m not sure I could sit through the film or ever reread this. 3mo
BookwormM I hated Scarlet right up to the point where I loved her 🤣🤣 3mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review. I liked this book much more than expected. Then tried to watch the movie and couldn‘t finish it. 3mo
CoverToCoverGirl Not a fan of the movie but I‘ve read the book three times. I liked Scarlet because she‘s a take no prisoners kinda gal in a time when that wasn‘t even a thing but her fixation on Ashley got on my nerves every time! 🤣😂 3mo
RachelO @Mdargusch 😊 I‘m going to have to tackle Lonesome Dove at some point now! - 3mo
RachelO @BookwormM 😂😂😂 This. Exactly! 3mo
RachelO @Cinfhen It was very uncomfortable in places - I‘m glad I‘ve finally read it. From the comments here, maybe we don‘t need to sit through the film though. 3mo
Cinfhen Yeah, I think you‘re right 😘 3mo
RachelO @Cathythoughts @BarbaraTheBibliophage @covertocover Thanks! I‘m even worse with long films than long books, so I think you‘ve all just given me permission to skip that! And CJ, yes! Every time Ashley appears, he just goes down in my estimation - what WAS she thinking?! 3mo
RachelO @Velvetfur Just remembered! This was a pre-2019 birthday present, so number 3 in my #readinggifts2019 (even if I ended up reading most of it on holiday on Kindle 🤔) 3mo
Mdargusch Yes! Glad you will try LD now! But I loved, loved, loved this movie! Try it! The costumes, the actors, and seeing it playing out is worth it. You just have to keep in mind how old it is. 3mo
Velvetfur @RachelO That's so cool! I haven't read it or seen the film but I know it's a classic; it's good to hear you loved it so much! 3mo

I‘m at a loss for words over how to feel about this book.

It is horribly racist. Scarlet is a terrible character. She‘s selfish, mean, and childish.

However, this book broke my heart a little. It has a cast of characters I won‘t soon forget. It is possibly one of the most interesting epic novels I‘ve ever read. I devoured it. Despite its flaw, I‘m almost certain, when the dust in my brain settles, that this will be a favorite novel.

Samplergal Yep. That‘s about right. 😂 3mo
TrishB Yep. 3mo
Caterina Your review is the first one that's ever made me consider reading this book. I always thought the racism and the main character's awfulness would be too much, but maybe I would still enjoy it. Someday... 3mo
Ashley_Nicoletto @Caterina I felt this same way, but I‘m glad I read it. It was an experience that I was happy to have. It gave me a lot of stuff to chew on and I‘ll be processing for a while. 3mo

Sometimes you run and lift everyday...

And sometimes you ice and elevate because yesterday you thought that your 5 ft tall legs could sprint four 90 second runs for distance at a speed of 7.4 after a long endurance run.

#QuotsyMar19 Day 6: To #procrastinate is to be robbed of precious time, seems like. 🧚🏼‍♀️ I am so averse to procrastination, it is cray-cray.

Kimzey You‘re on the right path, then. Trying to train myself out of procrastination. Its effects are cumulative and inhibiting. Easier said than done though! 😬 6mo

This was a gift from my best friend Kim, a few years back. Sadly, my best friend moved out of state today and I miss her terribly. So, I'm thinking of her as I read the motion picture, complete and unabridged edition of "Gone With the Wind!"

Cinfhen It‘s hard when a good friend moves 😢😢 6mo
Nerdy_Bookworm @Cinfhen It really is, especially after 18 years of friendship. It sucks that I wasn't able to say goodbye. 😢 6mo
Cinfhen Oh, that‘s even harder 💔18 years is a long time...Thank God for modern technology, hopefully you can stay in contact 💟 6mo

I'm in love with my new bookshelf. An excellent value at $30 as it is pine. You can see what I was using before, a cramped, ugly cupboard. My grandmother's copy of Gone with the Wind has a place right next to Scarlett. I can't wait until my husband leaves for a meeting tonight so I can sit in my chair and READ!

Crazeedi Excellent! May I ask where you "stole" this from? I soooo need another book shelf but I dont want a cheapy and definitely dont want to spend an arm and a leg! 6mo
Princess-Kingofkings @Crazeedi I found it on Facebook Marketplace. For months all I have seen is pressed board cheap ones or beautiful bookshelves that were way beyond my budget. 6mo
Crazeedi @Princess-Kingofkings good idea, I'm going to have to look there...thanks! 6mo

Time for #frideas!!!
Feel free to join 💕 spread the love and the word, I wanna know your answers 🥰

1. GWTW (I'll get into the reason later)
2. 02/15 (only because I'm single, otherwise I'd be all for Valentine's Day!)
3. Can I make Patrick Swayze count?! 😍
4. Both, as long as I can have a good reason to cry and be moved
5. Rhett Butler (GWTW): he spoils Scarlett, he loves her and he's willing to wait for her for 1000 pages. This is love to me!

Klou My mum and one of my sisters would agree with you on number 3. They love him! My mum read his autobiography in less than 2 days and cried like a baby. 6mo
Boooooks Patrick swayze always counts 😍 6mo
SailorMoon @klou OMG I wasn't aware that there's a biography!!! I MUST READ IT LOL 6mo

SailorMoon @Boooooks 😍❤ 6mo
Klou @SailorMoon yes. It was written by his wife, or she helped write it. You'd have to check that as I'm not completely sure. An emotional read I'm sure. It was released the same month he died I believe. 6mo
SailorMoon @Klou I'll be sure to look it up then!!! Thanks!!! 6mo

Pickpick

Absolutely brilliant and worth every word of its 1000 pages. It is super racist but shows the opinions of the time in which it's set. What incredible characters, Scarlett and Rhett are like no other, and Melly!! Reading it was like watching a TV drama series.
Don't be put off by the length, it's worth more than 3 great novels and more than 30 mediocre ones. Oh, it's amazing, I love it so much!

TabbyGibby One of my all time favorites and I've been thinking of reading it again soon. Too many books, not enough time! 7mo
Birdsong28 Thing with this book it was written in the 1930's about the 1800's so even though we are sensitive to the language and ideas in the book now, it was accepted as 'normal' at the time of release. So you have to keep that in mind when you are reading it. 😀📚📖 7mo
sophierayton Yes, absolutely. You have to take a book in its entirety - author, country, time etc. 7mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I felt exactly the same way when I read it. I was a lil put off by the length, but ended up devouring it. 7mo

SailorMoon Well well... you didn't just play along, you also love Gone With The Wind!!! I am so happy for this #ThursdayQuote! ❤ and yes, it's much less annoying than Annie's song @LauraJ 🤣 7mo
TheReadingMermaid @SailorMoon girl, Gone with the Wind is my total jam! I am totally a Scarlett O'Hara!!! And the film is absolutely timeless and incredibly amazing. 7mo
SailorMoon I wish I were half as strong as she is! It would be just enough for me!!! Lots of people think she's just a spoiled brat, but c'mon she manages to lift up her whole family and her friends' families from the devastation the Civil War brought upon them! She's nothing but an example for strenght, in my opinion!!! 7mo
TheReadingMermaid @SailorMoon 100% AGREED!!! 7mo
SailorMoon Sleep tight!!! 😘🌙 7mo
TheReadingMermaid @SailorMoon sweet dreams sweetheart 🤗 7mo

Ok, let's see if we can all make Friday ideas #frideas a thing!!! ?
It's a way to introduce myself and to get to know this community! So, I'll start!

1. Friends ?
2. Six friends having the time of their life while dealing with everyday problems and perks
3. Difficult one... I guess "Gone With The Wind"
4. Am I too boring if I say "GWTW" again?!
5. ...because I wish I were half as strong as Scarlett... and have her wardrobe ?

Ok, your turn! ?

jillannjohn I‘m with you on - Scarlett‘s clothes and Rhett Butler in my plantation house? 🙋🏻‍♀️ 7mo

Scarlett O'Hara is one of the strongest character in literature, who's always been misunderstood... in my opinion
She's a spoiled, whining, social climber girl who also manages to lift her whole family up from the Civil War. She is not afraid of a bad reputation as long as she and her family don't suffer from hunger, so she works as a man in a men-world, something not appropriate for a lady at that time.
She is also capable of great love.

I finally did it. Forced myself to read it. At least I can say I did it.

If you want a story about a girl who goes through hell and then leaves you feeling empty at then end... This is your book 😂😂😂😂

OrangeMooseReads Scarlet really does stay pretty static 7mo
JanePratt @OrangeMooseReads right? I just expected "The greatest love story of all time" it definitely wasn't my favorite! 7mo

I feel weird or incomplete when I don't finish a book. So I have been pushing through with this one!

Definitely not my favorite;however, I do see why people love it!

Crazeedi I say don't waste your time when there are so many books, so little time! Btw, this was one of my favorite books as a teenager😊😊 7mo
jillannjohn One of my all time favs! 7mo
JanePratt I just hate how much Scarlett is going through!!! 7mo

readinginthedark I've decided I'm never reading this one, but I know what you mean about pushing through! It took me five years to finally give up on Tess of the D'urbervilles. 😅 7mo
JanePratt @readinginthedark oh goodness! I LOVE Tess!!! 7mo
readinginthedark I just couldn't. 🙈 Hardy is a good writer, and I understand why his writing was so significant. But I hated all of the characters for some of the same reasons I hated most of the characters in Wuthering Heights--primarily how selfish they all were and their inabilities to stick to decisions. 7mo
JanePratt @readinginthedark I totally get that!! I want to read Wuthering Heights so bad 7mo
readinginthedark You should! If you loved Tess, I'd recommend it. Not that they're the same, but I think most of the same people like them both. 7mo
