Ruthiella That‘s got to be one of the least romantic marriage proposals ever…😳 2w
See All 24 Comments
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella so pathetic, and I hate that she just gives in to everything. Yeah, he‘s had a fancy wedding, but she hasn‘t! (edited) 2w
TheAromaofBooks One of the things that always gets me with this book is how much of what we are reading does NOT happen - we are constantly getting scenes from the narrator's imagination, things she can see happening but aren't actually reality. The entire section of seeing herself saying goodbye to Max, seeing herself going to New York, seeing herself being introduced to boys there - it's like we read the real story but also the parallel possibilities. 2w
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks so true! It‘s like the only time she has a personality is in her own head 2w
ElizaMarie I mean… there was NO time to say he loved her! He had marmalade for breakfast!!!! (Ha) #OhJan #MarmaladeTakesTime (edited) 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I wonder if we‘re going to get a Han and Leia moment 😂 2w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly that would be epic 🤣🤣 #iloveyou #iknow 2w
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks yes!!! And she‘s fascinating as the unreliable narrator because the writing is so intoxicating and I always get swept away in her fantasies even though I know it‘s a sham 2w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame Yes! 💯! The writing of her mind‘s eye is so beautiful, and the reality of Max‘s dialogue is so blunt and spare. 2w
Roary47 @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead I thought the same thing about the marriage proposal and the fancy wedding. Lol I like that #MarmaladeTakesTime @ElizaMarie Our narrator, Jan, reminds me of Sansa now with her imaginative mind verses reality @TheAromaofBooks @IndoorDame 2w
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 I wasn‘t even thinking that, but she does remind me of Sansa in that sense -no idea what people‘s motivations are, things are all supposed to play out like a story but don‘t. 2w
5feet.of.fury Hoppy really annoyed me in this bit, even if Jan is naive (no dispute) she really felt the need to take her down a peg, doesn‘t matter that she‘s right, what a jerk. 2w
ElizaMarie @5feet.of.fury YES! I mean she kinda went to the whole “what did you do?“ and I thought she was alluding to the fact that she thought she tricked him into a proposal, but then at the same time calling her young and naive and just... Ugh! 2w
Ruthiella @Roary47 @5feet.of.fury Sansa Stark is a good parallel for clueless, romantic Jan. 👍 2w
kwmg40 I laughed when I read the part where Maxim orders breakfast, then takes out an emery board and starts filing his nails, right before he proposes marriage. Is it normal for rich people to file their nails in fancy hotel restaurants while waiting for their food? 😂 2w
BarkingMadRead @kwmg40 I don‘t know if it‘s normal, it‘s definitely repulsive 2w
5feet.of.fury @ElizaMarie yeah being a nosey Nelly in everyone‘s business & being confused by the whirlwind is one thing, but to tell the poor young woman that she‘s going to bore everyone at Manderlay‘s parties was so spiteful. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @kwmg40 I definitely think Maxim is just a weirdo 😂 2w
kwmg40 @Clare-Dragonfly That sums it up pretty well! 2w
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Thank goodness he didn't use nail clippers! 😂 2w
dabbe @IndoorDame Agree 💯. And because she is so hard on herself, she can't believe Max (oops, Maxim) might love her because she thinks she's crap. It also doesn't help to have a brooding Byronic hero as your husband! 😃 2w
willaful @BarkingMadRead Very well put! Her imagination is vivid but also so often her own worst enemy. 1w

Cuilin Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all, the needle returns to the start of the song, and we all sing along like before. And we‘ll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow 🎶 5mo
dabbe A book about nothing. Yep, that about sums it up. 🤣 5mo
Bookwormjillk Why do we always pick books where either someone die‘s every chapter or nothing happens. There is no happy medium with this group 🤣 5mo
rubyslippersreads I think this was the dullest chapter so far. 5mo
bthegood The constant “nothingness“ of the chapters makes me feel Wilmet's restlessness - 😖 5mo
Bklover Can you put me back on the tag list? 5mo

Ch 45-46: y‘all. I searched for Georgy pics and these came up 🤣 I feel like he is more like Louis though! #anyway #beckyisstillhorrid #ameliaisoffendedbyosbornesoffer #but #iworrythatnowshewillgivein #herparentssuck #wheresdobbin #DOBBIN #pemberlittens #hashtagbrigade

Bookwormjillk Mad at Emmy's parents. What's wrong with them?? 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I couldn't believe how nasty Amelia's mother was today!! 8mo
See All 10 Comments
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk ugh! Right?!? She is NOT responsible for her father‘s poor choices! 8mo
dabbe The last we saw Dobbin he was practically running all the way from India to England. Where the heck is he? And it's getting worse seeing how much Amelia vicariously lives through George. This can't end well, can it? 8mo
Cuilin @Dabbe The Sedley‘s money issues always seem to affect Amelia. I feel she‘ll give up George and I agree that can‘t be good? What is Dobbin going to do about it? 8mo
Daisey @dabbe Yes! I kind of hate how this story jumps from character to character when I really want to know more. We went from Dobbin determined to come back to it feeling like time was passing with no more mention of him. Guess I‘ll just have to wait and see, but I‘m definitely nervous about Amelia‘s choices. 8mo
dabbe @Daisey As long as this book is, Thackeray is good at the ol' cliffhangers! 🤩 8mo

IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead gasped over here. But I do my CAD reading in the morning and am always trying not to wake the neighboring apartments with yelling and book throwing. Frequent struggle! 8mo
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame 🤣🤣🤣🤣 me at Panera every week 🤣🤣🤣🤣 8mo
Daisey I absolutely had a moment when I listened to this! I barely managed to stop myself from getting ahead. 8mo
Bookwormjillk D__d 🍌👖. I was settling in for a good harangue about gambling and then Becky drops that little bombshell. 8mo
Bookwormjillk @IndoorDame 🤣🤣🤣 8mo
mcctrish This was an INSANE 2 chapters!!! First off, George is garbage!! It was bad enough his sisters were mean to Amelia, now his dad says she‘s isn‘t good enough for him AND he‘s a self absorbed douchebag?! 🤬🤬 then as soon as I realize Mrs Pitt is in her deathbed I‘m thinking #dearlordnottheoldmanproposingmarriage and then he does?! 🤯 but Becky is already married? Is this for real?! 8mo
TheAromaofBooks I was mind blown!!!! I actually think Becky would have done great as Sir Pitt's wife - she would have ruled the roost, bossed him around, and made sure she inherited everything when he died 😂 But WHAT EVEN!!! I was not expecting that plot twist!!!! 8mo
dabbe Becky being married is one of the best cliffhangers ever! Didn't Thackeray publish this as a serial? What would we have done back then if we had to wait a WHOLE MONTH for the next installment? #gobsmacked I also loved how Becky took down good ol' George. She put the “sarc“ in sarcastic! 🤣 8mo
AnnR @Dabbe That's a great point about it being published as a serial. The zingers Thackery sticks in some 'chapters' would definitely bring reader(s) back for more. They must have felt impatient waiting for the next installment but it also sounds fun. 8mo

Morr_Books I like Peter, but I feel like I can't let myself get attached to any male characters, so I am cautiously hopeful he is alive. 11mo
dabbe I'm getting to the point in the story now where I want to know more about the narrator! Alas (using some genteel language here), it seems she will only be destined to be the #cranfordchronicler and nothing else. I'm also coming to care quite a bit about Miss Matty. 11mo
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books I know! Being a dude in this book is not healthy! 11mo
Ruthiella Poor Miss Mattie. To lose her brother, then her parents. 😢 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly I suspect Peter will return in the next chapter to profess his love for a woman he was attached to in his youth, and then die. 11mo
Bookwormjillk This is wrong but I laughed when he threw the pillow baby. 11mo
Clare-Dragonfly I wonder how Matty knows what kissing sounds like. 🤔 11mo
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly ohhhhhhhhhh 11mo
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly Good point! 😳 11mo
willaful @Bookwoemjillk I think Donald Westlake borrowed the poor pillow baby for one of his books, Castle in the Air IIRC.

@Clare-Dragonfly 😂😂😂

And I gotta hand it to Miss Matty, she put a lot more effort into getting pronouns right than many people do today. 😁
11mo
Clare-Dragonfly @willaful Yes, I appreciated her pronoun use! 😆 11mo

IndoorDame He had better not be the marrying kind! I‘m still skeptical 🧐 1y
peanutnine @IndoorDame I'm also very skeptical. He's so creepy but she seems drawn to him for some reason 1y
See All 12 Comments
Bookwormjillk See yesterday I thought they were going to get married. Today I think he‘s her dad. 1y
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I wondered the same! He insinuated they were related somehow! 1y
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead they have the same eyes! 1y
RebelReader I think they are related too. I thought that whole scene was creepy, but then this whole book has been all kinds of creepy. 🤪 1y
Clare-Dragonfly I was pleased to see Lucy snap back at him a little, but he hardly seems to have noticed! And she‘s always getting over his nastiness, so she‘ll probably get over his voyeurism, too 🙄 I am glad to be reminded of their separate religions, though. I don‘t think either will convert so I‘m less concerned that she will marry him. 1y
Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk Ooh, maybe! I think he just means they are mystically connected but that is an intriguing possibility. 1y
Ruthiella I agree they will never marry due to the differences in religion. But yes, this is TOTALLY CREEPY! 😱 1y
Bklover He‘s just such an ass! I highlighted this comment he made- paraphrasing- A woman of intellect was a sort of luckless accident, a thing there was neither place nor use in creation, wanted neither as wife nor worker. The next part is awful too, talking about how only lovely feminine placid passive mediocrity was the only pillow on which a manly thought could find rest for his aching temples. I really really dislike that man. (edited) 1y
BarkingMadRead @Bklover I cannot get over what an ass he is! 1y

Pickpick

Very cute book/play about six kids stuck in a bathroom. And yes, there is a stuffed cat involved. Sort of reminds me of a middle school version of the Breakfast Club. Also includes the actual play that can be acted out. I already read my book for #litsybythenumbers #6 #six #but this would qualify too.
