Hilarious. I love it.
Happy Friday! The first day of July #20in4 hosted by @Andrew65 My goal is to read 20 chapters of Vanity Fair. I start chapter three today. This photo is a nod to the shockingly funny end of chapter one. ✌🏼❤️📚
Found this sweet copy on ebay. It has lots of great artwork included in it. I haven't read this one yet but have heard good things. Fun fact: Charlotte Brontë also loved it. So much so that she dedicated her second edition of Jane Eyre to the author. This was a steal at only 6 dollars.
New phone cover came in!! ❤️❤️ My Tale of Two Cities cover was literally falling to pieces, but it lasted for several years. Time to honor another favorite now. #EnglishNerdSwag
I touched one of these beautiful books today. Found in a local antique shop. The leather was exquisite. The page edges were marbled and fabulous. Printed in 1883 or 1889, I'm sorry I can't remember exactly. It was a 22 volume set. Sadly they were a tad out of my price range at $750. They were truly stunning though. I have not read the tagged book but it's on my tbr list. #vintagebooks
1. My family is fine with my reading habit. My mom has asked a few times though, “Do you have to take a book everywhere?”🤣
2. My parents & sister read but not as much as I do. My sister & I love going to our fave bookstore, browsing, & eating at their restaurant.
3. The tagged has been on my kindle for a long time. Also, Middlesex & The Virgin Suicides have been on my tbr, but I never seem to get to them. #wondrouswednesday @Eggs
Birthday gift! A book I've never read before but have heard alot about. I'm a little surprised I've never read this considering it is a time period I've loved reading about before. To new adventures 🥂 #thriftbooks #birthdaygift
#ShowSomeLove #StartsWithV This is a novel I love .It was serialized in parts (Iike Dickens) in 1847-1848 . Becky Sharp is a master manipulator & will do anything to get what she wants .Foolish & interesting characters throughout. This is a 1945 Dodd, Mead edition that was rebound in lovely green leather.Made even more precious because my mom bought it for me after I raved about it.
Almost done with this one!! It took me longer than I wanted but I needed breaks from Rebecca...she grates my nerves, lol.
Thanks @Ruthiella for the tag! Becky Sharp , the main character in this novel has #Enthusiasm but it‘s basically for money , power, and influence! 😂 #Litfortunecookie
Does @vivastory want to play? @KVanRead
My first Thackeray… and now I‘m willing to try others. What an amusing cast of greedy, foolish characters! This satirical classic is engaging in #audiobook format, read by Jane Lapotaire. #Victober
She gave a little sigh, a shrug with her shoulders, which were already too much out of her gown, and, dashing the pin through the card, sat slumming it for a while.

We must not be scandalized that in all her castles in the air a husband was the principal inhabitant.
‘“MISS JEMIMA!” exclaimed Miss Pinkerton in the largest capitals.‘
Well! I‘m barely five minutes into this audiobook and already surprised. I had no idea that capital letters were used to indicate shouting as far back as Thackeray‘s times.
I thought some would like to see this month's cover of Vanity Fair, featuring Breonna Taylor. The painting of her is done by Amy Sherald.
Ta-Neshi Coates is the guest editor and also writes one of the lead articles...it's so good!
Say her name: Breonna Taylor 🤙
Watching Vanity Fair on amazon prime it‘s so good. This is my favorite Becky portrayal to date.
Technically a reread though it been nearly 40 years so I couldn't remember much. The 800 pages fly by as we follow the brilliant and unscrupulous Becky and wonder whether poor old Dobbin will finally get the girl. Cynical, funny and unsparing of human foibles. A masterpiece.
#Gratefulreads #classicyouenjoyed Becky Sharp, a character you love to hate to love. She was an orphan , but not without skills , she will crawl over everyone to get wealth, finery, and position including her meek friend Amelia.I remember loving this book , though it‘s been years since I‘ve read it.
"I have brains," Becky thought, "and almost all the rest of the world are fools."
Considered as one of the feistiest women in literature, this #girlgonewild is high up on my characters-to-read list.

@Cinfhen
This took me a while to read and my interest ebbed and flowed, but overall I thought this a good read. Becky Sharp certainly lives up to her name, calculating the best advantage for herself.
This is the first thing that came to mind but I‘m ashamed that I haven‘t read it yet! #fair

Thackeray promised a “novel without a hero“... but, I don't know, I kind of LIKED Becky Sharp! She was shrewd, manipulative, out for herself, but also witty, strategic, and her “fall from grace“ sounded like a LOT more fun than the miserable lives the rest of them ended up with! It's a long book - Thackeray got paid by the word, I think, and it shows... Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/vanity-fair-william-makepeace-thackeray/
Catching up on Serial Reader and hanging out with this lovebug! My parents are dog-sitting her 😍♥️ She is a golden doodle.

I have just finished it and I must say I didn't like it so much. I didn't like Rebecca and I didn't like Amelia either.. Two different women who cross their path in this satirical novel of the English society in the 19th century... I read it because I had to and because I don't like leaving unfinished books. ⭐
Took a while to finish but it was definitely worth it. Story is still very relevant and characters relatable if not necessarily likeable. Amazing to think it‘s 170 years old!!!
I bought this gorgeous edition of Vanity Fair years ago and read it but... It's one of the books where I think the movie was better!
What #moviewasbetter for you?

hello to @Smrloomis @Lizzybennetgirl
Leafing through my father's heavily marked up copy of Vanity Fair—which I haven't read, a little bit of Greek jumps out at me. So odd to see now. I read that only one of George Eliot's books can be printed without Greek type. #randomthought #cataloging
I went a thrifting today. My spoils 😊
Vintage editions of Arabian Nights and Vanity Fair
1970s edition of Watership Down
The Inhuman Condition is from the mid 80s
A hardcover edition of Queen of the Damned to replace my mass market PB edition

This is one of those books, I think, that you have to read at the right time of your life. This was not that time, for me. Though I thought the writing was good & Thackeray‘s commentary funny & at times poignant (+ timeless), the exposition & historical style, combined w a too-busy life (topped off w a very active (almost) 2 yo), meant it was a largely unenjoyable read for me—esp the 2nd half. Since I know it was good, it stands at ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me.
I finished Vanity Fair. finally. I can‘t say I enjoyed the 2nd half. But I‘m glad to have... finished it. 🤭
Treating myself w a couple questionnaires 😁
1. Yes, 15 yo calico cat named Kitty Bear
2. Pastries w a friend, Explora (so great) w buggy & various family members, household chores, church... read?
3. Knit, paint, road trips 😜 (& many others!)
4. Portland, Maine, Alaska
5. How many books are you reading now & which are you enjoying most?
Rebecca Sharpe #StartedFromTheBottom and attempted to social climb her way up in this novel. I‘ve actually yet to read this, but I‘ve seen a number of adaptations. #TimbitTunes
I started this monster book on kindle, but ended up listening to most of it—the narration on this version is really good!
Long and sprawling, witty and satirical, this is quite a character study. I think I recognized someone I know in real life in each and every one of the main characters. A novel without a hero, you say, Mr. Thackeray? Then please explain Dobbin. ❤️
Becky is an inexcusable snake, though. 🤷🏻♀️
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#December #TBR! Vanity Fair will be a finish on Serial Reader; Murder on Christmas Eve & The Girl Who Played With Fire are both #Booked2018; Innocent Blood is #whodunituk; Seventeen #Lmpbc & Transformers is my 'geek' read for PBT over on GR! #WinterWonderland @Cinfhen @TrishB
Did you know that the phrase Greased Lightning was a thing in the 1840s?
I was just folding laundry and listening to Vanity Fair (a beast of an audiobook), and all of the sudden there‘s a horse mentioned named Greased Lightning. 😯
After a quick google search of the origin of the phrase, followed by a quick song and dance break, I am back to audio-folding. 😂
And now you know! 💫
I have nothing against this 700 page novel but would it kill them to throw in a character chart? I keep having to look it up when I get someone mixed up. 🤦🏻♀️😂
Look what I found for $2!! This totally brightened my rainy day 🌧
We picked Vanity Fair for our Long Winter's Read for my RL book group... so some of us decided to buy a pretty version For extra motivation 😜. This is the one I picked! I think the illustrations (just a handful) are a nice addition. ☺️
