Cranford | Elizabeth Gaskell
A level 4 Oxford Bookworms Library graded readers. Retold for Learners of English by Kate Mattock Life in the small English town of Cranford seems very quiet and peaceful. The ladies of Cranford lead tidy, regular lives. They make their visits between the hours of twelve and three, give little evening parties, and worry about their maid-servants. But life is not always smooth – there are little arguments and jealousies, sudden deaths and unexpected marriages . . . Mrs Gaskell’s timeless picture of small-town life in the first half of the nineteenth century has delighted readers for nearly 150 years.

Mehso-so

Life in a sleepy village back in the 1850s. Dramas do occur here and there, and I see the literary merits of this novel (originally published in serial installments), but overall it felt just too quiet for me. Perhaps it was the timing of my read.

The others are just some of the books I bought in 2016 that I still have yet to read 😣 I have been reading only unread books this year and I'm doing well with that so hopefully I can tick all of these off my tbr list finally πŸ˜„

This was an entertaining read on Serial Reader. Set in the 1800s in the English town of Cranford, I got a glimpse of the lives and social mores of the time. It was often humorous and I miss my daily visit with the ladies of Cranford now that I‘ve finished it.

quietjenn Now you can watch the series (unless you already have). I'm not sure how it compares to the book, but I'm fond of it. 5y

A thoroughly entertaining novel relating the "adventures" of a small town full of independent matrons who go through the years striving to retain the "old genteel ways" of living even as the Industrial Revolution threatens at their doorstep and despite any pecuniary constraints. Gaskell shares an honest yet heartwarming portrayal of feminine friendship that enlists infallible assistance even in the face of irreparable tragedies.

Reviewsbylola Cranford is great. I need to read more Gaskell. 6y
MKbookworm @JazzFeathers Not at all. The lives of a group of women living in a small town as told by a friend who frequently visits. Written in the 1850s. It honestly feels almost like a series of vignettes. While some stories go through multiple chapaters, I think you could read certain sections separately or not in order and not be at all confused. I believe it was originally written serially. (edited) 6y
MKbookworm @Reviewsbylola you originally suggested it to me when I was looking for a new serial read last month. Thank you! 6y

A real feel-good book. The way the widows and spinsters of Cranford try to live up to their believes of what is good and bad and - especially - how one should behave, is very touching. Their struggle to justify their way of living and their acting differently in extraordinary situations, made me laugh and even almost cry. The dialogues are witty, the characters (they would drive me crazy in real life!) are very well worked out. #1001books

In case any of you didn't know, George Eliot was a pen name for Mary Anne Evans.

Leniverse A lot of woman writers used male pen names back then, but are published under their own name today. Funny that she is still George Eliot. Then again, it is less obviously a fake name than, say, Acton, Ellis, and Currier Bell. πŸ˜„ 6y
jenniferw88 @Leniverse I knew but it was surprising how many of the students in my Victorian Fiction module at university didn't! 6y
GabrielleDubois George Sand, in France, same century, same years, was also a woman writer, her real name was Aurore Dupin. 6y
