This charming novel about life in a 19th-century English village is a quick read from the #1001books list.

Rushing to finish my #doublespin for November, but ready to tackle a mix of classics and brand new titles for December.

Life in a sleepy village back in the 1850s. Dramas do occur here and there, and I see the literary merits of this novel (originally published in serial installments), but overall it felt just too quiet for me. Perhaps it was the timing of my read.
#1001Books
I‘ve been reading Cranford when I‘m on the treadmill -1 a good way to knock out a #1001Books ! It was a free download.
This is just a little #bookstack of some of the #unreadbooks on my shelves ππ Stolen has been on my tbr list for so many years now! The others are just some of the books I bought in 2016 that I still have yet to read π£ I have been reading only unread books this year and I'm doing well with that so hopefully I can tick all of these off my tbr list finally π
This was an entertaining read on Serial Reader. Set in the 1800s in the English town of Cranford, I got a glimpse of the lives and social mores of the time. It was often humorous and I miss my daily visit with the ladies of Cranford now that I‘ve finished it.
A thoroughly entertaining novel relating the "adventures" of a small town full of independent matrons who go through the years striving to retain the "old genteel ways" of living even as the Industrial Revolution threatens at their doorstep and despite any pecuniary constraints. Gaskell shares an honest yet heartwarming portrayal of feminine friendship that enlists infallible assistance even in the face of irreparable tragedies.
My latest #serialreader read, was thoroughly enjoyable. My first, but not last, work by Elizabeth Gaskell #readmoreclassics
A real feel-good book. The way the widows and spinsters of Cranford try to live up to their believes of what is good and bad and - especially - how one should behave, is very touching. Their struggle to justify their way of living and their acting differently in extraordinary situations, made me laugh and even almost cry. The dialogues are witty, the characters (they would drive me crazy in real life!) are very well worked out. #1001books
I read nine books this month. I liked most of them, but these three stand out. I'm still chucking a bit about the ladies of Cranford and their "elegant economy."

In case any of you didn't know, George Eliot was a pen name for Mary Anne Evans.
Thought I'd pair my @SerialReader issue of "Cranford" with a tall, refreshing glass of cool water in one of my favorite glasses when I noticed a crack in it. ?? This week is turning into a master class on why I can't have nice things.
"Mrs Forrester ... sat in state, pretending not to know what cakes were sent up, though she knew, and we knew, and she knew that we knew, and we knew that she knew that we knew, she had been busy all the morning making tea-bread and sponge-cakes."
Gentle, genteel, and oh so charming! I enjoyed my time in this small English village. Reading Mrs. Gaskell is always a pleasure.
Spending time in Cranford on this stormy Saturday morning.
