I started reading this book 3 YEARS ago! When I got to the chapter “Books to keep” I put it down. I couldn‘t skip past it but I knew whatever she had to say would be crap. I. Was. Right. She ripped pages out of books to keep phrases, sentences, paragraphs that moved her? If the whole book didn‘t bring her joy give it to someone else. I know I‘m fixating but honestly WTF. I‘m the one who will be crushed to death by my tbr pile. Happily.

BookishMarginalia I agree. That is crap advice. 9mo
BridgetteM My jaw is on the floor. What?!!! 😮😤 9mo
Chelleo What a waste. She could just have easily taken a photo of the pages and gave the book away to someone who could enjoy it. This method ruins it for others. (edited) 9mo

laurenslibrary I find her whole obsessive organizing lifestyle disturbing. Why can't I have things? Why can't things be a little messy sometimes? Let me live my life! 9mo
KathyWheeler I also have a problem with her statement that the moment you first encounter a book is the right time to read. Sometimes it really isn‘t; sometimes the right time for you to read that book is years after you first encounter it. 9mo
OrangeMooseReads That is a complete waste. She could have just typed them out and donated the books. (edited) 9mo
mcctrish @BookishMarginalia I can‘t believe the surge in craziness about this book, like I said I started it 3 years ago and then hit a road block 9mo
mcctrish @BridgetteM I wasn‘t expecting it at all 9mo
mcctrish @Chelleo she starts with writing down her favourite passages in a notebook “40 books and that is too much work” then she is going to photocopy, again too much work ( #what), then it‘s ripping and gluing and again to much work so just rip and file. Honestly why does she have anything at all 9mo
mcctrish @laurenslibrary she says at one point, something to the point of “when I was pursuing perfection in the field of tidying” and alarm bells went off for me. 9mo
mcctrish @KathyWheeler I totally agree! When you read a book is sometimes more important than how ‘great‘ the book is 9mo
mcctrish @OrangeMooseReads first she tried writing them copying, apparently copying was even more work 🤦🏻‍♀️ I can‘t even 9mo
LoverofLit Sorcery! 9mo
mcctrish @LoverofLit I guess with the Netflix series this has been coming up more and more. MK is qualifying her choices with the climate in Japan as very humid so books are easily wrecked by the excessive moisture and books are not as important to her as they could be to someone else. Obviously 9mo

I thought of this book because of the cover - which made me think about how I really dislike movie tie in covers. Which made me laugh because I think this is one of the books where I like the movie better.

[DELETED] 206653737 I agree the movie was so much better than the book in this case. Rare, but true for this one. 2y

#manbooker shortlist was announced this morning. I only predicted 3. I'm stunned by 2, happy about my top 4 making it (even though I did t predict 4321)
#what do you think of the list?

JenP @Simona @BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles what do you all think? 2y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Ive only read 3 of these, but happy Lincoln and Wolves are there! 2y
BarbaraBB I am surprised. I certainly wouldn't have thought Elmet and History of Wolves would make it. And I am sad that Roy and Shamsie didn't make it. Overall I am not too happy... 2y

JenP @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I really liked history of wolves but I'm stunned it made it. I didn't think it was nearly as good as Reservoir 13 or Solar Bones 2y
JenP @BarbaraBB I didn't love Roy's book but I'm sad about Home Fire which I loved. I can't believe Elmet made it 2y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Have read Reservoir or Bones yet - Im behind! 2y
BarbaraBB Oh and Reservoir 13! It should have been shortlisted as well. I did like Elmet and History of Wolves, but they were definitely not as good as some others. 2y
Lindy The 3 that I've read were wonderful, so I'm pleased to see them here (Autumn, Exit West & Lincoln). I guess I will be moving Elmet up on my TBR now. 2y
Reviewsbylola I hated Exit West. I plan to eventually read Bardo. Other than that 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
Redheadrambles Having only read three from that list I am pretty happy Autumn and Lincoln are there and Exit West likely deserves a spot even though it didn't work for me as well as Underground Railroad. The reviews on the others are mixed so I guess I might need to set about reading them ? I am certainly happy Res13 is not there ! Always a tough job to get a shortlist everyone agrees with, this year seems no worse than most in terms of shock exclusions ;) 2y
Hooked_on_books Given all the love for Whitehead, I'm surprised his isn't here. But maybe the story is too American. Of these I've only read Exit West, which I thought was fantastic, but I have 3 of the others, so I should probably get cracking on them. 2y
JenP @Hooked_on_books ooh, read Autumn but if you don't like it, don't tell me 😁 2y
JenP @Redheadrambles I'm rooting for Autumn although I loved Lincoln in the Bardo too and really liked Exit West and 4321. 2y
JenP @Reviewsbylola really? You're the first person I've heard say they hated it. I have heard some people who didn't like it that much. Why did you hate it? 2y
JenP @Lindy I'll be curious to see what you think of Elmet. I really liked it until the last third which ruined my positive opinion of it. 2y
Simona @JenP @BarbaraBB Sorry for my late response 😌 What do I think? The judges have chosen from the great longlist the weakest ones ... for one of them I even dare to say that it's very poor executed in every sense. I'm still looking shortlist with a raised eyebrow and I really wish that I could listen to their discussion. I'm disappointed 😥 ... 2y

Really? Masculinity is so fragile that fully trained astronauts grab larger urine collection devices so they won't be embarrassed about their penis size? Apparently this happened often enough that the sizes are now L, XL, and XXL. Like...what?
