Who would want to harm Discworld's most beloved icon? Very few things are held sacred in this twisted, corrupt, heartless -- and oddly familiar -- universe, but the Hogfather is one of them. Yet here it is, Hogswatchnight, that most joyous and acquisitive of times, and the jolly old, red-suited gift-giver has vanished without a trace. And there's something shady going on involving an uncommonly psychotic member of the Assassins' Guild and certain representatives of Ankh-Morpork's rather extensive criminal element. Suddenly Discworld's entire myth system is unraveling at an alarming rate. Drastic measures must be taken, which is why Death himself is taking up the reins of the fat man's vacated sleigh . . . which, in turn, has Death's level-headed granddaughter, Susan, racing to unravel the nasty, humbuggian mess before the holiday season goes straight to hell and takes everyone along with it.

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView 1. “Hogfather”… guess I like the actual book more than the title itself😆
2. Not necessarily, but a good one-word title can sound mysterious and intriguing and make me want to know more. I agree about “Divergent”!

New episode just dropped! We discuss Terry Pratchett's Hogfather, The Jerry Seinfeld comedy sitcom, Gilmore Girls, and much much more. How do we fit it all into one episode? Easy, it's an hour long.

Prepping the Hogfather episode! This was the first Discworld novel I've read and I have to say that I feel sort of abashed that it took so long. It's very British, very funny, and right up my alley.

Ruthiella I only read my first Discworld book last year and feel the same! Totally my sense of humor and why did I wait so long? 😆 11mo

The Hogfather has disappeared on the Eve of Hogswatch. What‘s to be done? Death steps in to keep the belief alive, & Susan is as awesome as always.

I love Susan so much. She is so practical and stubborn. And Death. Death looking at the presents for rich kids vs poor kids, Death looking at the Little Match Girl, Death being told “that‘s life” and deciding “no, not tonight” always brings me to tears. In my top 3 Pratchett books. Period. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

TheSpineView Awesome! 11mo

If I've read the first five Discworld books and the Tiffany Aching ones (those were my introduction to Pratchett) , will I miss much if I skip ahead and read Hogfather? Or should I just keep going in pub order?

mabell You can absolutely read this out of order. Really just a bit of previous familiarity with Death is helpful. (From what I remember 😆) 11mo

The longest night of the year is coming up. Share some light. ✨

1. Christmas Eve, the whole family sits together and reads Dylan Thomas‘s A Child‘s Christmas in Wales.
2. After Winter Games last year, I made a decision to make reading Hogfather by Terry Pratchett a yearly tradition.
3. There‘s one present for everyone to be opened on Christmas Eve from the Christmas Eve elf. ❤️

Kicking off my holiday reading with the Hogfather.

An excellent story as ever. Each time I read it I grasp a bit more of the depth of the tale and humans need for make-believe.

despite part of the movie adaptation boring me significantly, this was a pretty fun read (and I reminder that I need to read Death's subseries sooner rather than later). I was kind of surprised to see that Death taking over the role of the Hogfather is only a small part of the book, with weird amounts of focus given to the archchancellor instead? I do think Susan is pretty darned cool though.

I‘ll admit, this one took awhile to get me sucked into the story, lots of separate stories in the beginning and it wasn‘t until they started to come together and interrelated a bit more that it got really page turning for me. Loved all the poking at and examining Christmas and traditions and belief...and Susan is really growing on me as a character.

That about sums it up really....🤔.

A coffin wrapped in chains, let‘s open it; a sealed tomb, open it; anything that says danger, let‘s go, surely it will end differently for us we‘re better/special/smarter/etc... we really are steeped in our own superiority myths.

Good and creepy beginning...and great side commentary on the origin of “fairy” stories, well not fairy per say, more like the Grimm Brothers to Disney version story evolution slide.

Probably Pratchett‘s most rememberable creation is when Death takes over the Hogfather‘s job, jolly red coat, beard, pillow case and HO HO HO included. Since he is busy, it falls to his granddaughter, Susan, to actually rescue the Hogfather. We have hilarious household gods like the “oh god” of Hangovers and the Cheearful Fairy; I loved Hex and the error messages; overall fun romp and a treatise on belief and humanity. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think this is the quintessential Death book? I think this is the quintessential Death book. I liked this mode of Susan a LOT better, every set of perspectives was interesting, and this book has just rocketed up to somewhere near the top of my personal Disc rankings. I may have to make it a seasonal tradition!

I think that rubs me the wrong way about Susan is her presumptiveness. She knows, say, that Death doesn't keep pets, but she also refuses to talk to him for years at a time and mostly pretends that they aren't connected at all - so how do you know what he does and doesn't do?!
Also, every one of these Susan stories make me dislike Mort the character more and more.

I loved the social commentary about Christmas, consumerism, and social inequality. I also loved the commentary on human belief and mythology. I know neither was the point of the book, but I enjoyed it all the same. I also enjoyed the story. What‘s not to love about Death filling in for - and saving - the Hogfather (Santa)?
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I also liked how Death didn‘t care about the rules and made sure kids got what was on their lists, no matter how much everyone told him he couldn‘t. #TerryPratchett #Hogfather 3y

In this situation, this is funny. For anti-science people, they take this literally (kind of like death, if you think about it). Hm, how philosophical. The denial of science means death for humanity. Fitting. Accurate.
