Agatha Christie's genius for detective fiction is unparalleled. Her worldwide popularity is phenomenal, her characters engaging, her plots spellbinding. No one knows the human heartor the dark passions that can stop itbetter than Agatha Christie. She is truly the one and only Queen of Crime. The Body in the Library The body of a beautiful blonde is found in the library of Gossington Hall. What the young woman was doing in the quiet village of St. Mary Mead is precisely what Jane Marple means to find out. Amid rumors of scandal, Miss Marple baits a clever trap to catch a ruthless killer.

Brainstorming the Marple T-shirt this morning! It‘s such a great idea 💡 considered a keyhole back but prefer the Peter Pan collar style 🧵What do you think of pearl buttons? I‘m leaning towards a stretch knit so they would function but largely decoratively 🪡

I am an Agatha Christie fan. I am! As a fan I hate to select “So-so” as the final verdict for any of her books, but rereading Agatha Christie‘s books as an adult is not quite reawakening the lovely feelings that I had as a teen reader of her work. She was adored. Don‘t get me wrong, she still is, but even in the cozy realm this story lacks gumption. It is missing brouhaha - the frenzied excitement of a whodunnit mystery.👇🏽

Nute Okay, how and why is there a body in the library of Mr. and Mrs. Bantry? I‘ll bite. I want to know, but along the way that curiosity waned, probably because of lack of interest in who was affected by it, other than obviously the poor dead girl.🥴 And calling this a Miss Marple mystery?! That‘s a stretch by all definitions. It was more like a book featuring a guest appearance by Miss Marple.👇🏽 (edited) 6mo
Nute Miss Marple‘s keen insights were not really needed, because by the time that she made a noteworthy appearance to solve the mystery, I was on the scene solving the mystery myself… helped along instead by the actual investigators, not the sleuth.
Now she did get me with a twisty revelation…Agatha still reigns as Queen there…she knows how to purposely misdirect and then shock a reader‘s perspective?👇🏽
(edited) 6mo
Nute She does that brilliantly. Props for that! See, she is my girl! And though it seems that this particular book should have remained a far distant memory, I am still on a quest to read all of her work. 6mo

LiteraryinLawrence Awesome review! I am also a huge Agatha fan, but yeah, not every single one is at the same standard. 🙃 6mo
Crazeedi What a well worded and thoughtful review! I never really read many of her books for some reason. 6mo
VioletBramble This one is on my 2022 reading list. I've had it a long time and I need to move it off the shelf. I'll go in with lowered expectations. Great review. Thanks for the warning. 6mo
Nute @LiteraryinLawrence Thank you, Allison!💕 I agree with you. Your words ring true for Agatha Christie‘s canon and many other authors who have written many books. Not every book can be described as their best work or exemplify the author at the top of her/his game. Yet, they remain a talented and prolific author. She wrote so many books. A ‘miss‘ here and there is to be expected. Have you read all of her books? 6mo
Nute @Crazeedi Thank you, Diane!💕 I have loved this author since my teen years when I had a magnetic pull towards quaint mystery books: Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, Sherlock Holmes, Ellery Queen stories, Albert Campion, Henry Gamadge, etc., after enjoying Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys books and so many others in childhood. For most of these authors, I have read the entirety of their mystery collections and at times I reread a book here and there. 6mo
Nute @VioletBramble Thank you, Kelly!💕 Are you reading through Agatha Christie‘s entire canon? I read many of her books in my teenaged years. I have decided to read all of her books as an adult which required a reread for several of them. Since I remember the event of reading them with such fondness, maybe I am not being fair to these books with this new scrutiny. This is usually the reason why I don‘t often reread well-loved stories. 6mo
Nute @VioletBramble Can‘t wait to read your review after you read this. Tag me.🙂 6mo
bthegood This is on my reading list - and yes, like most authors for me (if I enjoy the first read enough and continue with them) some of their work is hit and miss - I have yet to find an author that is a solid pick every time - 🙂 6mo
VioletBramble No, I'm not reading all the Christie books. I read a lot of her books when I was in 7th-9th grades. A neighbor used to pass all her books on to me when she was done with them. Her Ellery Queen books as well. In the many decades since 9th grade I have only read 1 Christie - Halloween Party. Body in the Library sounded interesting and it was one of the first books I bought on Kindle. I hope you enjoy reading your way through all the Christie novels. 6mo
truthinfiction Ahh, Kimberley, you have said it. I was excited to read this book simply because it had the word library in it. But, I was, somewhat, sorely disappointed. When it comes to Dame Christie, her Tommy and tuppence books are a miss with me. I only read the first two and afterwards abandoned the cause. Have you read her Colonel Race series? 4mo
Nute @truthinfiction It remains a wonder at Agatha Christie‘s proliferation as an author. She generated an extraordinary amount of written works which is why, I guess, we can be forgiving of a “missed” effort. The Tommy and Tuppence series didn‘t appeal to me either, but it was many years ago. Maybe I‘ll try again. I have read two of the Colonel Race series, Death on the Nile and Man in the Brown Suit. We have many options for our Buddy Read!🤗 4mo

Nute @Andrew65 I love that memory, Andrew! According to the PBS Documentary on Agatha Christie, her interest in crime and mysteries was spurred by listening to her Mother and her Friends discussing the crime section of the newspaper. They would temper their discussions because of her presence in the room which is probably what gives her stories that cozy mystery feeling. 7mo

Just no. I used to be such a fan of Agatha Christie in my teens. Now it‘s just is meh for me. Especially Miss Marple. I am willing to give Poirot another chance though.

Tamra I‘ve never been able to appreciate any of her novels that I‘ve tried. Even the lauded And Then There Were None was “meh” for me. I did enjoy the Miss Marple TV series, but I‘ve never read any. TV is so passive it‘s easier to buy in and I have lower expectations. (edited) 13mo

Stephanie Cole is an absolutely delightful narrator and I hope she does more of the Miss Marple mysteries. The story itself was fun, with several nice twists and fantastic characters. It‘s a story I‘ve seen on TV, but the clever twists mean I forget the solution every time, so it‘s new to me every time I read or watch it. 😂 #TitleIncludesLibraryOrLibrarian for #Booked2021

Interesting how the story starts off quite sympathetic to the victim but shifts as time goes by to disdain for her as a gold-digger.

Despite having read it before (admittedly 7 years ago) I still couldn't work out/remember who did it.

Overall a good plot with twists about not trusting stereotypes. Of mistaken stories. Although, again, I felt lost of it being a Miss Marple story with not a lot of Miss Marple. She did so more in this one, though, even as it was mainly her insight of being a woman. She was only helpful in that regard. That she noticed little points that the men couldn‘t. This was a good quick read through and through

June's book reviews in 4 parts. Weirdly I ended up reading 4 books per week 🤷🏻‍♀️

Had an Agatha Christie week continuing the Tommy & Tuppence series and then a Miss Marple mystery. I've decided to read through her mysteries for however long it takes (assuming into next year).

Surprisingly I disliked The Southern Book Club's Guide. Had been looking forward to it. Oh well.

vivastory I'm due for an Agatha soon 3y
Nute @veritysalter @Scochrane26 I enjoy reading her novels so much that I don‘t want my time with her to end! I read only 1-2 books written by her per year and I follow each reading with watching the corresponding BBC video adaptation. That‘s fun! Some books I have read twice, but only because the first reading took place when I was a young teen and I had forgotten ‘whodunnit!‘😂 3y
Nute @lele1432 I do too! I hate calling them BLOOD oranges, but they taste so good no matter what they‘re called!😋 3y
Nute @vivastory Do you make a conscious effort to read her? I try to read at least 1-2 of her books yearly. I wanted to read her chronologically, but that didn‘t work out for some reason. I wanted to witness Hercule grow in his abilities and Miss Marple...well, Miss Marple just become more of Miss Marple!🙃 Are you almost through her entire collection? I‘m trying to enjoy her for as long as possible.🙂 3y
veritysalter Yes, I do a few a year. I‘ve done all the Poirot, Miss Marple and Partners in Crime. I‘m working my way through the stand alone mysteries - Parker Pyne Investigates is my next read. I plan to move on to Dorothy L Sayers next and the Collaborative Detection Club novels. What do you plan next? 💕 3y
Nute @veritysalter Right now I am going between Poirot and Miss Marple. I have decided to collect her books in the William Morrow editions so I read as I purchase. Your accomplishment thus far is magnificent! Since you have read so many, you might enjoy the podcast, All About Agatha, which does a breakdown analysis of her collection book by book. It‘s kind of amusing to listen to two people claiming to be Agatha Christie aficionados!🙂 3y

This marks my completion of the Miss Marple books (except the short stories). I had to circle back to this—I accidentally checked out an audio dramatization of it last year. I was puzzled when it was so short, then found I‘d checked out the wrong version.😩Going back to it now, I enjoyed the full version—plenty of Miss Marple, good twists & turns, and a likeable cast of characters. And I was still intrigued by the mystery, even knowing whodunnit!

I read this between July 22 & 27. I gave it 3.5 stars (well 3 on GoodReads). I liked it but I don‘t think I care for Miss Marple too much. Or the style that Christie writes her in. Most of the time Miss Marple is absent and there‘s no clue as to how she solved the mystery. It‘s not a bad read but just that aspect is disappointing.

What a delight! I was having a stress attack trying to choose what to read next and picked this on a whim. Perfect palette cleanser that sucked me right in and along. I was surprised at the more lighthearted snarky tone of a Marple novel - this must technically be my first! Not my last 💕
And in the intro Christie explains how she wanted to tweak the common ‘body in the library‘ trope.
